In February 2000, on the undercard of the first Erik Morales-Marco Antonio Barrera fight, Margarito stopped Martinez in the seventh round -- his only defeat other than the debatable decision loss to Williams. At the time he faced Margarito, Martinez was 16-0-1 and had been boxing for only about five years (and had no amateur experience). http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/blog/_/name/rafael_dan/id/5118768/a-look-martinez-many-options
lol most mexican legends didnt have amateur careers at all.
Although i admit that most of them had somewhat of an amateur career as pro fighters before fighting tougher opposition. ( I say i admit because i am mexican and i am a boxer )
I think most knew that. Williams is also a guy with very little am experience.
Lol, next to impossible to get burner off of williams nuts.
Martinez is a very gifted athlete he started boxing at 20 and because of his athletism boxing has come very natural to him.
Didnt Nate Campbelll start boxing at 24 though, thats even more impressive?
And I wouldnt call 40 amateur fights no experience, its not a great deal but for alot of fighters its enough
Hes a Gangster who you know fail to make weight twice and don't care that tuff. Imagine someone try and rob him for his chain someone gonna tell that person chill thats the guy who don't make weight and don't care.Thats why Guzman hold weight in Brooklyn.
You respect him for basically cheating the sport?
Nope. But I do know that Joan Guzman is a bum who doesnt make weight!!

He only had like 40 fights though. That isn't very much experience at all. He and James Toney had very little experience before turning pro.
Still quite a bit and he had international experience to.
Martinez had a great amatuer career and went the World Championships and won the Argie national Title.
:pat:

Following a family tradition, Sergio began to box at the age of 20 along with his uncle Ruben Paniagua. He was so talented that only five weeks later he made his amateur debut and was victorious over Jose Pisani.
During this period he was being handled by his two uncles; Raul and Carlos Paniagua. His unique crowd pleasing style caught on, making him a hit with fans as well as the news media. His nickname "Maravilla" or Marvelous One" comes from a moniker that has stuck with him for the rest of his career.
During an outstanding amateur career with a total of 41 bouts, Martinez was a 2-time Argentine Champion as well as Inter Continental Champion. He was a member of the National Team where he participated in the 1997 World Amateur Championship in Hungary, along with teammates Omar Narvaez, Javier Alvarez, Fabricio Nieva, Guillermo Saputo, and Santiago Nieva.
Say something about my mistake now. LOL
The one who mentioned Cotto I put him in his place too.
So STFU this is about Martinez not tyrone
Do you know if Cotto ever quit in one of his amauteur fights?
Like who? The only one I can think of is Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. But his dad was a 3 division champ, so he probably taught him how to box when he was a kid
Bernard Hopkins and Chavez? Both had very little little or none. I think Toney even had less than 50 fights.
And I'm not downplaying it. I think its good that Martinez was able to do that. But its nothing HUGE.
Martinez got no amateur experience but he has always been a dedicated athlete. He def got the talent if he get a top of the line trainer (roach, nazim, etc.) he will def climb the p4p rankings .:boxing:
Anyways, there are plenty of others who had little experience.
Oh, so you're just trying to downplay having no amateur experience.
Becoming Middleweight Champion of the World having no amateur experience is pretty rare. Look at me trying to throw in facts :pat:. Continue hating...
