Let's go beyond the hype HBO gave Corrales for a second. What made Corrales some type of force before Floyd faced him. I get that he was been hyped up, but what did he do to warrant that?
Outside of beating Manfredy, he resume looked like sh1t and he was beating up on bums and c-class fighters. Who wouldn't look good going against opponents like that?
Best wins prior to Floyd:
Angel Manfredy- a fighter who has never won a world title in his entire career.
Derrick Gainer- zab judah is taking his career more serious right now that Gainer was back then (which tells you all you need to know about him at that point).
BTW this has nothing to do with Floyd but everything to do with all the Hype Corrales was getting. Floyd win was very dominate and he did what he had to do, but Corrales IMO was very overated at that time.

You've got to be kidding. Roberto Garcia was a respected champ and Corrales' performance against him is what first turned heads. After a slow start, he bludgeoned him. Angel Manfredy and Derrick Gainer were two top notch, prime contenders that he KO'ed early. And viciously. Corrales was a young, prime undefeated champ with solid names on his credentials. Coupled with how he looked in winning, he was rightfully considered an elite pound for pounder. The bad loss to Floyd is almost an anomaly.
there is no research that needs to be done, because I was watching boxing a lot back then. I never understood it even at that point because it was all based off of how he looked against Manfredy. I knew even then Manfredy wasn't all that great, so I was never impressed with that win. Again, this isn't to take away from Corrales, because he had a great career afterwards. If you notice, every fighter is hyped up to some extent. Who wants to see say "pac/clottey" if they told the truth about clottey?
They hyped dude to be this iron giant, the beast! So if you look at it its all just marketing, some fighters deserve it, some don't. Its a matter of oppinion to those who really know the sport, but to those that don't really follow, its a tool to get them interested.
Corrales was the top fighter at the weight an undefeated at 33-0. Imagine any fighter at 33-0 right now still early in his career at any weight class.
Then tell me he would not be a hyped fighter.
This was the P4P List. Corralles was a monster.
1. Shane Mosley
2. Felix Trinidad
3. Roy Jones Jr.
4. Oscar De La Hoya
5. Diego Corrales
6. Naseem Hamed
7. Floyd Mayweather Jr.
8. Lennox Lewis
9. Erik Morales
10. Bernard Hopkins
He was ranked over Hamed, Floyd himself, Lennox, Morales and Hopkins.

honestly Jrose, I give up. HBO is my God and everything they say I shall believe. If they tell me that by drinking piss and throwing stones, Marquez will beat Floyd, then I will blinding believe them.
I will never question them or anyone else again....peace
All the Floyd fans are saying is that its revisionist history. People always seem to use Floyd as their example.
Corralles was knocking heads off. I bet not you or anyone else in this thread looked at Corralles fight and didnt get hyped cmon he was a killer. Then after Floyd beats his ass after most thinking Diego would win now we question his ranking.
Corralles was an animal man.
Id love to see a thread from you explaining why Joshua Clottey didnt deserve to be a Top 5 WW.
But I see what you mean but its nothing we can do about that. Pacquiao himself is a part of the HBO hype machine.
I think what he is saying that is a great win because of what Corrales accomplished after that.
But, going into the fight he shouldn't have been rated so highly.
For example Burner just put a list that the ring had Corrales P4P ahead of Floyd and others. But, lets focus on Floyd. Because, we might become bias if we bring up the other fighters.
At the time could you have ranked Corrales ahead of Floyd? Lets think about Corrales best wins going in. Angel Manfredy(somebody who Floyd had destroyed in two rounds) and Derrick "Smoke" Gainer. And, you know what we can throw Gary St Clair in it too.
Now lets look at Floyd wins at the time, Hernandez(lineal champ, undefeated at the weight-class) Manfreddy(before Corrales beat him and also beat him 1 round sooner than what Corrales did) Vargas, and Agustus at 135. All this were wins Floyd had going into the fight.
Looking at those resumes can you tell me how Corrales was ranked ahead of Floyd? Do you justify those rankings.
Corrales was an elite SFW at the time no doubt. And, what Corrales accomplished after proved how good of a fighter he was.
But, should he have been ranked so highly P4P? Especially ahead of Floyd and etc? Him being ranked ahead of Floyd can company was he not somewhat over hyped? That is like the Ring right now having Caballero and Donaire in the top 10. Why?
I think some of you guys are missing the point that Osiris is saying.

I never said he was a bad fighter, I just didn't think beating Manfredy warranted the hype he was getting. I mean you guys say the same thing about Hatton, but Hatton had accomplished way more than Corrales did up until that point. Not taking away from him as a fighter, but I like for fighters to prove it in the ring (which he hadn't at that point) b4 people claim you are a monster at a certain weight class.
Nice to know, but again why would you consider Mayweather's win over him one of the most dominate performances you have ever seen in boxing? If he was just an above average fighter at the time that never proved anything.
I know people think I'm some how sh1ttin on Floyd's win, but I have made several post (in the past) in which I stated that Floyd's win over Chico was one of the most dominated performances I have ever seen in boxing.
With the rankings and HBO Hype. Its boxing my dude. If you have a guy who is 33-0 with like almost a 100% KO Ratio of course hes going to get hyped its the nature of beast. Not to flame but look at Pacquiao now is he a great fighter yes but after he beat Oscar the hype was so insane that you would think Ali was back. Its how it works.
Thing is we cant go back and change history we can do this for a plethora of fighters. Its not Floyds fault he was ranked so high. He was even ranked over Floyd.
Its HBO theyare known for hyping fighters look even today they do it. It still doesnt mean Corralles was a good fighter he was light years better then Valero will ever be and Valero was my dude.
I agree with what you are saying, but I only used valero as an example to prove my point. If Pac fought Valero and they did the same thing to Valero (hyped him up) and all of us Pac-tards passed that off as gospel truth...you would be the first to put us in our place. So I'm just curious as to why I can't question this myth?
I understand its HBO job, but that doesn't mean we can't question it and we are just suppose to accept it as gospel truth. Corrales was a good fighter, no doubt, but people still believe he was this Monster b4 he fought Floyd..which I never got, even back in 00-01.
the coralles that floyd fought .........just came out of prison................after a domestic dispute............he was clearly unfocused for this fight...............just sayin
No Corrales went to prison after Floyd.
(full credit and was one of the most dominating performances)
^ You keep posting this, but if you describe Corrales to be what you think... what is so dominating about that performances? He just beat another over hype regular guy to you.
I think what he is saying that is a great win because of what Corrales accomplished after that.

This has nothing to do with Floyds win (full credit and was one of the most dominating performances)

Diego beat Casamayor, Freitas, and Castillo all in a row.
It is considered by most boxing enthusiast and writers the best back to back to back win of our time in boxing.
At that time, beating all 3 of those guys was insane. Floyd never fought 2/3 of them and lost to castillo.
Can't even understand how someone can Knock Diego or Floyds win over him.
This is some real hater shit.
Again this is about the hype he was getting prior to the fight, and nothing to do with floyd's win (or what Corrales did afterwards)
the coralles that floyd fought .........just came out of prison................after a domestic dispute............he was clearly unfocused for this fight...............just sayin
^^^
excuses, excuses........
thx you just prove my point. Why was he rated over those guys when he beat an average at best angel manfredy and garbage ass gainer (dude was not taking his career serious at that time).
I mean Morales was straight beasting folks, as was Hamed....yet Corrales was over those guys?
BTW who wouldn't look great destroying bums? those other fighters proved themsleves against elite fighters, unlike corrales, and I always wondered why he was so hyped back then. This has nothing to do with Floyds win (full credit and was one of the most dominating performances).
Just for sh1ts n giggles, what would you say If the ring rated Valero over Pavlik, Mosley, Vitali, and someone like Bradley because of his KO record and win over demarco? Wouldn't you be saying the same thing if HBO was hyping up Valero as this indestructible force?
again this has nothing to do with Floyds win, Corrales career afterwards, but the hype etc he was getting and was it deserved. I posted this because people keep saying he was a monster prior to facing Floyd, yet nothing leading up to his fight with May proves thats.

he does that in every post........
e.g.
i fully support OST....but Pac shouldn't have to do it.
Guy is full of shite.
@ burner
I never said he was garbage, but my thing is this....everyone should have saw through the b.s and knew Floyd was the better fighter then (Just like HBO tried to convience us Marquez was gonna beat Floyd).
The whole point of this thread is not to believe what HBO shoves down the publics throat and to actually look beyond the hype. Corrales...good fighter, but he wasn't the monster people made him out to be. I say this because people keep saying he was a beast b4 facing May, when he was just a good 130lb that went on to do great things.
Diego beat Casamayor, Freitas, and Castillo all in a row.

Mike cmon this thread is crap. Corralles went on to still be a beast after he fought Floyd.
How was he garbage when he was the Number 5 P4P.
This was the P4P List.
1. Shane Mosley
2. Felix Trinidad
3. Roy Jones Jr.
4. Oscar De La Hoya
5. Diego Corrales
6. Naseem Hamed

8. Lennox Lewis
9. Erik Morales

Nice try bro. Corralles was taking heads off and was one of the most intimidating and menacing boxers around at that time and Floyd wiped his ass with him.
