Mayweather-Mosley: Is Shane the physically younger fighter?
April 9th, 2010
By Jason Kim: In looking at both Shane Mosley and Floyd Mayweather Jr. standing side by side, I’m struck at how youthful Mosley looks compared to Mayweather, the younger fighter. Mosley is 38, five years older than Mayweather, is supposedly a fighter that some people feel might be too old in this fight against Mayweather to win. However, people age at different rates and even if one person is five years younger than another person like Mayweather, the older person can still be physically younger. When I look at Mosley and Mayweather, I think Mosley looks to be the younger person.
I don’t know if it’s just me that is noticing this but this is something that can be important because if Mayweather doesn’t have an advantage in youth in his May 1st fight with Mosley, then he really doesn’t have much of any other advantages in this fight. Mosley was the best fighter in the 90s, and has continued to be one of the best fighters in boxing as he’s aged. With the exception of his controversial 12 round unanimous decision loss to Miguel Cotto in 2007, Mosley has never been beaten by a fighter his size or smaller.
Mosley has always dominated fighters smaller than him. On May 1st, the 5’9” will be facing the 5’8” Mayweather, and that one inch may be more than enough for Mosley to get the win against Mayweather. Mosley already has the better offensive skills, the better work rate and the ability to mix it up. Mayweather hates getting hit and retreats when his opponents try to draw him into a war. Because of this, Mayweather often winds up with really low punch outputs.
At 33, I don’t think Mayweather can increase his punch volume any more than what it has been. I think he’s starting to age, and lose his ability to adapt to different fighting situations. Mosley, in contrast, can do it all – boxing, move and slug. Mosley can shift effortlessly between each mode depending on the circumstances of the fight. Mayweather is kind of a one trick pony who only knows how to box, move and pot shot. He’s not someone that is going to go after his opponent and throw flurries.
And he won’t react well when Mosley starts cutting off the ring on him forcing him to fight in a way that he hasn’t in years. I don’t think Mayweather has the physical tools anymore to fight like this even if he wanted to. He just looks older, like someone older than his 33-years. Mosley has to pressure him, make Mayweather move his wheels and get him tired.
I don’t think Mayweather run for long anymore. He’ll come to a stop in one of the corners like he often does and stand sideways trying to get small and dodge punches with his shoulder roll. I don’t expect that approach to work at all well against Mosley. He’s going to know how to land his shots and get the better of Mayweather in close.
fellas....check out the conference call with floyd sr. and jack mosley....this topic was hinted at by jack. jack explained that his father is 91yrs old (still geting around well)....jack is near 70! (still runs, jump rope, hits the heavy bag).... both healthy...look at the mayweather bloodline......rodger and floyd sr. look rough and beyond their age....just think about it.....genetics are a mudafuker! if i had a choice, i would rather be sired by jack than floyd sr.
he called Floyd a "one-trick" pony....LMAO.....Floyd has an endless bag of tricks.
That's true but I thought he explained himself well. No question, you can't underestimate Floyd Mayweather either. But it's one heck of a matchup and I could see an assortment of scenarios being played out. This is one of them.
I can see this fight going a ton of ways but Im not like Burner & Horus who just have no respect for the fight and think that Floyd will just easily slaughter him and make him look stupid. Could that happened? Yes but its definitely not a sure thing. I respect Shane way too much and I think Shane's size & strength could be a factor. I hope Floyd doesnt listen to his dad and fall for that crap about Shane getting beat up in sparring. One thing will be interesting is seeing how the fight plays out if Floyd lets his hands go like his dad says he's been doing.
Ive always felt that Floyd could get back to his younger days but as of late I had started to lose hope. That was until I heard Senior speak after the JMM fight and its like he was upset at Floyd for not throwing more and said that it wouldnt happened again. That made me real happy that Senior is back because sometimes you need a new voice again to bring out the best in you. He's probably been staying on Floyd about letting his hands go and that is a great thing.
However, people seem to be 50/50 on how Floyd opening up will help him against Shane & Pac. Some think he will be much harder for them to beat if he gets his output up because he cant pot shot to a win against them while others think that if he opens up then it will give those guys more chances to catch him and he cant beat them in a fight. I will just like to see if he starts throwing again. Senior already has him jabbing more which will be big in this fight
good post............IMO i think Floyd is alot stronger than ppl think he is........this should be a very good fight. To me this is the most compelling fight boxing has had in years.

I think that would be a key move for Mayweather because Shane has always seemed susceptible to that punch. I'm sure Shane expects that and is preparing for it.

Good read, I agree to a certain extent. I'm confident in Mayweather's strength; dude is alot stronger then people give him credit for. Mosley isn't gonna find too much sucess trying to maneuver him; in fact Mosley might end up getting manhandled and Mayweather did say thats what he's working on. Don't worry too much on Mayweather's size, Pernell Whitaker was this little 5'5 1/2 dude and he was able to maneuver Tito, Chavez and Oscar around the ring. I'm confident in Mayweather having his way during the clinches. But we'll see. As for the bold, I saw a MAJOR difference in the Marquez fight; so I'm happy Floyd Sr. is helping.
Interesting, as of late I've started to view this as being more competitive then I originally thought. We'll see.

It's definitely a competitive fight. I've never wavered on that. I don't buy the "Mayweather looks older than 33" though.
Just that I'm stuck on Mosley's not so good of a jab and how he couldn't cut off the ring against Cotto. Don't need to add how he doesn't move his head.
I'm stuck on all that.

I think he just sees what Ive said all along in that Floyd is still not a natural WW and just looks smaller next to all the natural WW's. Its not older. He's just not that big of a guy and thats Shane's only chance.
Everything else this idiot said was just dumb. Now Mosley is the guy who can do it all and Floyd is the one trick poney? Thats the funniest shit ever. How did this clown ever get a writing job for a boxing site?
I noticed that too. He got a lot wrong but the one I felt he got the most wrong was using the one inch in height as some sort of factor. He must have missed the Cotto fight.

Did he not see the Cotto fight?
