We had a HUGE fight party at the house for this one. Pretty much everyone there was rooting for Oscar. I went against the grain and went with Bazooka. But Oscar showed some heart and did his thing in the 12th, but Ike withstood some bombs for about 30 secs and he kept swinging and survived the final bell. Classic bout. This is one of my favorite fights of all time. I thought Ike won it, but I can see why judges would score the fight for Oscar based on the last round...I mean, this is The Golden Boy we are talking about.
Your thoughts on that fight?
Lampley had such a raging hard-on for Barrera. His man-crush was cringe worthy. Making that Allah knows how to spell Barrera comment and then actually spelling out Barrera's name. He was so mad about the missed call that it took him about 4 or 5 replays of the knockdown in Barrera-Marquez to finally admit that Barrera did hit Marquez when he was down after dropping him.
"No disrespect to you Roy, but Barrera is the smartest boxer I have ever met"
That...was disgusting. I'm surprised George didn't backslap his a** when he said that. You know he wanted to.
:lol1:
I remember him saying that. I was furious that night. But truth be told, I always liked George - even when he was an idiot like the Trinidad fight. And I couldn't help but laugh at him during the Barrera-Hamed fight. He loved that lil' Prince so much...:lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

"Not much is a lot for Oscar De La Hoya. Not much IS A LOT"

After watching this and the other parts of the fight, it reminded me of how sickening George Foreman's biased commentary was that night. He was worst than Lampley.

The fight was not close and it is so freaking overrated.
Aside from the 6th and 12th rounds it was Ike jabbing and Oscar doing nothing.
Oscar clearly lost and it wasn't a great fight.
Agreed.
Along with Holyfield-Tyson 1, probably the most overrated fight in recent years. Two exciting rounds. Not a great chess-match, where one guy makes a mistake and the other guy makes him pay. This was two guys largely posing and staring at each other for long stretches of time.
The end was very exciting, and DLH finished strong, but did way too little in most of the fight, losing too many rounds, and was fortunate to have won the decision. Sort of like how later that year, Trinidad finished better, but lost too many other rounds to have deserved the decision IMO.

George was terrible that night. You would've thought Ike won only the sixth listening to him.
No lie, Ike looks like he's on auto pilot; in that he continues to throw after eating all those shots in the 12 :lol1:

4.00 mins start of round 12. sick

He also said he went through the same issues against Whitaker. If Azumah could do that much better in the rematch against Fenech, I only wonder how dfferently things would have gone against Pernell. It was interesting to hear him say that, too bad it didn't happen.
Pernell Whitaker Quote:
Only a fool would fight Azumah Nelson twice.
yeah man, every time I throw in tapes of yesteryear I keep thinking to myself...Man, these guys would f*ck today's boxers up! The elite back then were SO good!
Azumah claimed he had malaria in the first fight and was badly weakened. Whether true or false, at least he was willing to fight Fenech again - in Fenech's backyard, no less. Hard to believe he was down on the cards when he stopped Jeff. That would've been a far worse robbery than the first fight.

classic classic classic fight WEBB.
i was in cali for this one and in a house full of mexicans and the lone puerto rican was the only odlh fan.
ike put up a hell of a fight - but i thought, like others have mentioned, that odlh pulled it out in the 12th with that KD.
You know, I swear to everything; because keep in mind, I came to find out he was sick during the 2nd fight. So I kept asking myself "What is Azumah doing differently?!" because he did so much better the 2nd time around. He did get worked to the body really good and I think he may have punched himself out a little in their 1st bout; I don't know. As for the bold, I agree 1000% man, unreal!

Those two would beat the f*ck out of the 130lbers today. Azumah implemented the same strategy he used in the first fight except this time, he wasn't sick.

another fight that i was pissed off cuz top rank and bob arum got the nod in vegas again but this was a very good fight and i also was rooting for the upset with ike quartey but after that huge 12th round comeback from delahoya it made the upset that more unlikley but props to osacr for showing heart and for quartey for making it a close great fight and i was pissed that they never did a rematch to this fight
Yeah. LOL @ Oscar's comments when they asked him about a rematch. Who knew that he'd be made an ATG by the Johnny-Come-Lately's today?
