It may be that this thought could have already passed through your heads already, but I was thinking about it now. The Margarito win over Cotto changed everything in the welterweight division, cheat or no cheat it did change everything. If Cotto would have won, possibly by close decision, we probably would have seen Miguel Cotto vs. Oscar De La Hoya on December 6, 2008 instead of De La Hoya vs. Pacquiao. Miguel Cotto would probably still be undefeated at 147, since we would have not yet seen a Cotto vs. Pacquiao matchup and we would still be discussing a possible Cotto vs. Mayweather fight instead of Pacquiao vs. Mayweather. Pacquiao would probably now be moving up to 140. Ricky Hatton would probably still be undefeated at 140 and a relevant name in the division. Mayweather would have come out of retirement to face possibly Margarito, so he could beat him more convingly than Cotto to make a statement for a Cotto - Mayweather superfight, since Cotto would have layed down the blueprint to beat Margarito, instead of fighting Marquez to make the statement he made for a Pacquiao - Mayweather showdown (maybe I'm giving Mayweather to much credit). Be that as it may, those things didn't happen, and we can't change history, so maybe it was for the best or worst, but we should enjoy what has happened in boxing, I know I am but it was just an interesting thought. Discuss.
Where would Mosley be at this point? Would he have fought Cotto again? If he did he'd probably win, and then would that make him the new p4p king? And wouldn't Mayweather-Mosley be the most anticipated match at that point?
Hatton would still be Pacquiao's bitch, but it would be more shocking and upset-like because Pac probably wouldn't be p4p king and nowhere near as popular.
And finally, would we see Pacquiao fight guys like Bradley, Witter, Valero, Holt, etc since he'd probably clear LW and JWW in this alternative universe? I think Pacquiao-Holt at 140 could be a good fight if both are at their best. Valero would get KO'ed easily, Witter would quit like he did against Alexander and the Bradley fight would be VERY interesting.
I was going to point that out that Cotto would have probably rematched Mosley after the Cotto-De La Hoya fight, but the result is still a bit dodgy because even though we saw a new Mosley in the fight vs. Margarito, there is still a ? whereas he looked so superior because of the style match-up or he is now superior to all styles, remember Cotto style is different than Margarito's.
It also changed everything in that it pretty much ended both Cotto and Margarito's career's at the elite level.
*tear*..so true..AMAZING fight but it took their souls that night..even tho Margarito won..we saw he wasn't the same after he came back from that night..
Cotto would have KOd DLH, then probably rematched Mosley then Mayweather... as for Pac he would have probably fought JMM again then move up to beat Hatton and rule the JWW divison. Mayweather-Cotto still should happen at 154!
WAR COTTO!!!
How would Hatton still be undefeated? Floyd KO'ed him almost a year before the Cotto-Margo fight.
If things were this way, Pacquiao probably would have cleared the LW division and would be making his way through the JWW division.

why wont cotto rematch marg??? i remember an interview where cotto said he wouldnt give marg a rematch, but i dont remeber what his reasons were.
Cotto should want revenge but imho marg still beats cotto, by starting off early.
I bet they rematch at 154 once cotto beats foreman.
Because he believes fighting Margarito again is rewarding him for cheating, but maybe that just turns out to be a lot of nonesense if Margarito makes a statement in his comeback.
All that was lost in one night because of a possible cheater.

man what a waste. one day we're counting the days when cotto vs. mayweather will finally happen, then the next day, their names couldn't be farther apart. damn you, margarito! marg-cotto was a great fight, but i would happily trade that for cotto-mayweather. it would have been the megafight of the decade.

but either way pac is better than cotto, therefore we gotta a better fight with pacquiao and mayweather now.....
OP makes a very good point and one that i hadnt really thought through before.
However I also agree with your comment in that Pacquiao v Mayweather would be the best fight so hopefully, if they get it on.... :boxing:
all is well that ends well !
Wow I never thought of it like this. Pac should be glad Marg cheated.

It would have been nice to see Cotto KO DLH..too bad it couldn't go down like that..
Cottos killer instinct keeps fading, I don't know if he would have KO'd Oscar if they would have fought. Even if Cotto had beaten Margacheato. No doubt in my mind Cotto would have won, but it would have most likely been by decision.
