Pacquiao-Clottey earns big PPV bucks

Manny Pacquiao's lopsided unanimous decision against Joshua Clottey generated 700,000 pay-per-view buys and $35.3 million in domestic television revenue, HBO PPV's Mark Taffet said Tuesday.
The pound-for-pound king routed Clottey to retain his welterweight title on March 13 in the first boxing event staged at Jerry Jones' $1.2 billion Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Clottey, a native of Ghana living in New York, brought no significant fan base to the fight and was virtually unknown to the masses, so the figures are a credit to Pacquiao's popularity.
"We are extremely pleased with the pay-per-view performance of Pacquiao-Clottey. Fights like this traditionally do not exceed 400,000 buys," Taffet said. "It is a testament to the popularity of Pacquiao and the vitality of the sport, and it gives us great encouragement as we look toward the May 1 Mayweather-Mosley pay-per-view fight."
The breakdown for Pacquiao-Clottey was 350,000 buys from cable homes, 310,000 from satellite homes and 40,000 from telco homes.
Based on his pay-per-view history, Pacquiao, of the Philippines, has become a crossover star in the United States.
In 12 pay-per-view fights, he has generated 6.25 million buys and $320 million in revenue. The bulk of the total has come from his last four fights: Clottey, Miguel Cotto (1.2 million buys), Ricky Hatton (800,000 buys) and Oscar De La Hoya (1.25 million buys).

Really? The same guy Team Pac ducked because he was too good and he wasn't a draw back in November, but now he's a draw.
Not saying he's a big draw, but he's mos def a BIGGER draw than Clottey and has name recognition amongst casual fans and a workhorse of a pr team in GBP, dont you agree?
IA, but say Mayweather Mosley does 1.7 or up, selling a Million more is something that is going to be hard to ignore. whether we like it or not.
It'll def be hard to ignore..I quite frankly could give a flyin fu.ck about ppv sales, its a damn shame and a big reason i believe why boxing is 10 steps behind mma in terms of making quality big fights happen......
Great numbers especially without a dance partner.
Should Pac and Mayweather ever meet, I'm expecting 3 million PPV's.
3 million + is my prediction. This fight caters to every single person out there, black, mexican, asian, white, young and old, casual, new fans, etc.
With that being said, 2 things are a given now wether people want to admit it or not. 1 is that Floyd is the biggest star & money maker in the sport. Pac fans cant seriously argue against that. You just cant. The 2nd thing though is that 700,000 against an unknown name is beast stuff that wouldve never happened a couple of years ago so it shows you how big Pac is and how far the sport has come. Floyd & Pac wouldve given anything a few years ago to get 500,000 and now they will feel like bums if they get that. Thats great for boxing. Fukk UFC
I hate getting into PPV debates cuz I really don't care but I want to say this you keep saying about JMM PPV buys. How many PPV headlines has JMM had? And, now how many has Clottey had?
Margarito and alot of guys have had headlines but they all put up sucky numbers. JMM in his very next fight will probably be on regular HBO or his PPV will do 150,000 and he only is getting that much because his name after Floyd
Floyd has also come out and said the same thing
I know that..hence me saying "the first one"
but if you go back and look at the dates..Arum made that comment..
and a few days later after Arum said that..Floyd said the same thing..
I just want the fight made..i dont care about the split..but I wont be surprised when this issue comes up..due to the reason I already stated..

the point hes saying is JMM never had even close to stellar numbers beforehand..(for those who claim JMM was the bulk of the reason JMM/PBF had a million buys)..
----
and Arum knew Clotteys PPV headline scenario..but still boasted this would do a million..and even said if it does more than Floyds next fight, they would demand a bigger split..
----
now Mosley..who hasnt headlined a PPV event in a while..whos fight this year was to be shown on HBO world championship boxing..is all a sudden bumped to a PPV event with Floyd..so no one can say Floyd isnt the main attraction when those numbers are good..
Decent, buy rate. Not Great though. Most likely did slightly under 700,000
not great for "The Event" though.
Manny did a great job just based off of his talent though and had little to do with the actual promotion.
this is the one concerning thing for me..though 700k looks good to us..when it comes to PPV negotiations and Mosley/May does beyond expectations..Floyd more than likely wont settle for 50/50 anymore (if he gets past Mosley)..reason being..ARUM..he is the first one who made the statements..that if Pac fight sells more than Floyds next fight, they will be asking for more than 50%..hes also the one at the beginning who said this would sell a million PPVs..im sure Floyd will look at these numbers and compare/contrast..
Floyd has also come out and said the same thing
Floyd has a way better dance partner.....end of story

this should carry over well when the renegotiations with mayweather after may 1. 51k is also a plus.
It's not going to carry over well at all...
Not if Floyd does twice or triple what Manny did against Clottey.
700K is excellent for any fighter against an unknown, but not when Mayweather is beating him by a large margin against the same/similar opponents.

3/23/09 officially marks the death of Mayweather-Pacquiao. Although January 12th or whatever date it was probably owns that title already after Arum made it clear that the random blood testing cannot be a requirement if the fight happens, this was the icing on the cake. There's no way in hell that Mayweather-Mosley will not sell more than this. I wouldn't be surprised if it doubled 700k, or did more than double. If Floyd can do 1.05 with a fighter with a small fanbase (let's face it, Marquez isn't a big draw and couldn't even reach 200k in 2008-2009 without a big name like Mayweather or Pacquiao, and I don't even think he did much with a good drawer like Juan Diaz), then 1.05 is a huge accomplishment for Floyd. Mosley has a pretty big mexican audience himself so I can see the fight doing 1.5+.
I'm a Mayweather fan, but two wrongs don't make a right. He should at least try to negotiate something. Same goes for Bob Arum.
It met expectations, not exceeded them. Which is still very good.
Exceeding expectations is when a number drops and blows people away and leaves them in shock. (Mayweather/JMM) When those number dropped people were shocked as hell.
So why did Mayweather vs JMM do 1 million buys
Wasn't this a hated matchup and a mismatch?
LOL.
JMM did 100k buys vs Casamayor. He's not a dance partner.
