Knowledgeable about what happened or about how to actually fight? There's a difference. HBO announcers other than Manny Stewart and maybe Kellerman really don't know much about the nuances of fighting. They all promote the same straight up one-two hands held high style, fists constantly pumping as if there's only one way to fight every fight.
Other than Manny Stewart, you don't watch HBO and learn much about how boxing works, or about what styles counter other styles well. You don't learn much about how momentum shifts in fights or what punches to throw in what situations. You don't learn much of anything about strategy by listening to HBO announcers. They all say the same thing; either come forward or circle. If you come forward, just throw a lot of punches. If you circle, work off your jab and punch in combination. As if nothing changes based on who your opponent actually is and what is working well for you and him.
Certain punches work well in certain situations. Depending on who is stronger, you need to know whether you should come forward, circle or move backward. And that is also going to dictate which punches you throw and from what angles. The HBO announcers, for the most part, have no clue about any of this.
and this is why antonio tarver is miles ahead of everyone. Dude is killing it right now. He goes on long rants telling u everything u need to know.
They all know boxing. I think the least knowageable is Bob Papa though. He knows the sport, but I think he has the least knowledge.

The true expert there Bert Sugar & Larry merchant, Max's still a work in progress but getting better, manny steward is overrated, Jim is the best Blow by Blow but He's under control by Whoever's the House Promoter. Lederman just a comedian.
Pacdbest still better than all of them...the closest one to me is Larry Merchant. We almost agree on many things.
How is manny steward overrated though? I can understand if you don't like him as announcer or disagree with his views. But dudes been around boxing basically his whole and has trained some great great fighters.
All these guys know the sport in and out. You can't agree with what everyone says but I would rather sit there and listen to them talk about boxing then half the people on this site who just talk about Mayweathers and Pacs personal life.
lol I agree, it aint the same when Kellerman replaces Merchant,
So whos your preference dudes, HBO or Showtime?
Yeah, I'm gonna miss Larry when he is gone.
Can't stand Showtime outside of Bernstein. HBO has the higher production value, that counts for something, I'd go with them.
I agree tarver is one of the best at the moment.its worrying to think that when steward goes lennox lewis is replacing him who in my opinion is one of the worst commentators there is.If there is any chance of hbo getting jones again they should jump at it
he's beating them by a mile though.
I thought I was the only one that hated lewis. Dude is awful, he states the obvious and just sounds stupid.
Antonio on the other hand drops jewels.
antonio tarver is completely outclassing everyone.

are bert sugar, letterman, max, manny, larry, and jim paid to act like they know boxing:boxing:?
more boxing knowledge comes out of the farts of bert and larry than you will ever know in your lifetime ....so breathe up son
even if you view them only as commentators or announcers, they sure do have watched and followed the sport for a longer time than most of us here, and i bet religiously, since they need to know the background of each fighter and how he fights and whoever were his past opponents and how they fought to be able to do a good job commentating. im pretty sure they constantly rewatch tapes of fights, even if these are boring obscure fights since its their job to do.
u guys gotta remember when these guys are actually being objective with a fight and when they're actually 'selling' a fight or a fighter. i mean come on, bert sugar knows MP is not the best of all time.. but he was selling him for the Clottey fight. come watch this fight, come watch this fight. thats all they're doing.
they all are pretty damn knowledgable though, i knew about them but Roy Jones and Max Kellerman surprised me the most though with their knowledge.
He said Pacquiao is on the cusp of being an all time great. I just watched that countdown tonight where he said it. And Pacquiao has quite the legacy, his place in history is sealed.
Which one said Pacquiao is better than Henry Armstrong then? Because that shit is down right retarded.

No, Gus Johnson gets paid for that.
Except for Max, everyone of those paid their dues more than 30 years ago. And Max spent years on ESPN2 doing Brian Kenny's job and on the boxing page for the ESPN site.
Sugar doesn't work for HBO btw.
These are one of the more annoying opinions when some people think paid analysts who have been around the sport for the majority of their life don't know shit about it. no one's OPINION is perfect and it doesn't necessarily mean its a fact (obviously), but Sugar and hell, even Lampley will know more than 80% of this forum.
