and give the reasons why.
1. Top Rank - this company actually spends their own money to put on shows and builds fighters from pro debuts to champions.
who else..... Goosen Tutor, Shaw, DiBella, etc..... A wild card of mine is Prize Fight Boxing. This company has really built some good young fighters over the years. The Peterson Brothers, Rayonta Whitfield, Shawn Porter, Fernando Guerrero, etc..... It is good to see a young promotional company investing and believing in African American fighters.
And my obvious omission was Golden Boy because I believe they have been detrimental to the sport by monopolizing prime HBO dates and delivering garbage fights on those dates. They also never build a fighter but steal an already built fighter after another promoter has put in the work. They are not real promoters IMO.
if you cant tell the difference between a fighter who had no amateur experience, who bob arum made it clear in the beginning not to look for chavez in any title fights until possibly 40-50 fights into his career.
and a so called champion who's promoter has contracts drawn up to keep his mandatory away from him.
there is a clear difference between carefully grooming a fighter who has no amateur background, and shamelessly protecting a "champion" with b.s. contract stipulations.
Why do you think Arum wanted mayweather back. Who in there right mind wouldnt put Boxing's Cash Cow ahead of everybody.
Uhh i contended that if not for GBP, someone else will promote his fights per diem..err card. My point was never who wouldn't work with mayweather since he does print cash.
Great article.
I have been critical of GBP for the most part, though they put on some good cards.
What really ticked me off is last year during the Mayweather v Marquez fight. During weigh-in there was a bit of controversy. Although GBP never disclosed the catch-weight, it was unofficialy known to be 144. Then on the day of the weigh-in Mayweather weight at 146, 2 pounds over the contract limit.
This is very blurry in my mind, so feel free to correct me. But during the weigh-in there was a contract revision that edited the penalty per pound to be around 600,000(?)
GBP, the company that Marquez signed up to promote him, never defended him or made a public outcry. While they catered to the one and done mayweather.
BTW
Not hating on mayweather, if GBP isn't promoting Mayweather via per card status, someone else would definitely do it. If so, would Dibella, Shaw, or even Arum put him ahead of their own contracted fighters.
my 2 cents on GBP

I'll let Greg Leon say it because honestly he says it much better than me.
GOLDEN BOY PROMOTIONS: DINOSAUR BREATH
By G. Leon
When it first came into existence, Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions told the world he was going to run the company differently than "dinosaurs" like Bob Arum and Don King. Statements like "The fighters don't work for us, we work for the fighters" lead some to believe a changing of the guard really was at hand. A few years down the road, ********** points out several instances where Golden Boy's actions resembled the very dinosaurs they enjoyed ridiculing.
Signing John Ruiz: Golden Boy Promotions recently signed John Ruiz to a promotional contract. Ruiz is the mandatory challenger to WBA heavyweight champion David Haye. Golden Boy Promotions already has a vested interest in Haye. Fortunately for Golden Boy, this fight isn't taking place in the United States where it could be viewed as a severe violation of the Muhammad Ali Act by taking future consideration from Ruiz even though Ruiz was already guaranteed the Haye fight under WBA rules. Am I the only one who viewed this as a Don King move?
Inability to Promote African-American Talent: Golden Boy grabbed this torch from Bob Arum and took off running. Golden Boy "PARTNERS" Bernard Hopkins and Shane Mosley found themselves on the bench for over a year following masterpiece performances over Kelly Pavlik and Antonio Margarito. Winky Wright, another prominent African American closely associated with Golden Boy, dropped a close decision to Bernard Hopkins and found himself on the sidelines for 22 months before he was fed to Paul Williams. Golden Boy's website touted Wright's planned fight in Puerto Rico, but the compnay did nothing when that fight imploded for Winky. As this goes to print, Wright is looking to align himself with Bob Arum.
Judd "Benedict" Burstein: With over eight years in the boxing business under my belt, my greatest regret is referring Shane Mosley to attorney Judd Bustein. The questionable, at best, moves Burstein has made as Mosley's representative will be outlined in a future expose, but for now let's just ask how in the world Burstein can represent Shane Mosley's best interest when he's on the Golden Boy payroll? Bob Arum confirmed to ********** that Burstein will represent Golden Boy in the Manny Pacquiao defamation lawsuit, which leads me to believe that the negotiations between Burstein and "Sir Vrichard" Schaefer must have been as intense and ferocious as Don King negotiating Ricardo Mayorga bouts with his son Carl.
Is GBP to Mexicans what DKP is to African Americans?: "Once he beats Marquez.." were the words of Golden CEO Sir Vrichard Schaefer to Boxingscene.com as it related to Golden Boy's newest acquisition Amir Khan's proposed fight with future hall of famer Juan Manuel Marquez. Golden Boy was supposed to be representing Marquez too, but the CEO spoke as if a Marquez loss was a foregone conclusion. It didn't take long for Marquez rep Nacho Beristain to express his displeasure over being treated like a "stepping stone." Obviously, Sir Vrichard still hasn't learned how to promote one of his fighters without completely disrespecting the other. Since bolting from Don King, Juan Diaz has been horribly mishandled by Oscar and company. It was not in Diaz's best interest to fight Malignaggi, but they made the fight anyway. Memo to Golden Boy: If you make fights that are in the best interest of your young talent, you will have no problem securing HBO dates when your output deal expires in 2011.
The Mayweather Treatement: Golden Boy Promotions has been involved with every Floyd Mayweather, Jr. fight following his split decision victory over De La Hoya. Mayweather has no signed contract to GBP, but they seem to have accomodated his every request, serving him better than their own contracted boxers. Despite GBP holding all of the cards, Mayweather was matched against Marquez while Shane Mosley rode the pine. Mosley only landed the Mayweather fight after Andre Berto (who, like Mayweather, is also repped by a guy named Al Haymon) suddenly pulled out and Mayweather's clash with Pacquiao crumbled. Mayweather-Pacquiao taking place would have likely prevented Shane from fighting the winner until 2011, since there was a great chance Pacquaio-Mayweather would have become a best of three. Simply put, Golden Boy can and will do better as it relates to maximizing the potential of their contracted athletes, if they provide them with the Mayweather treatment.

HBO has alot of connections with Oscar, Haymon etc...They bring them alot of money.
Really they do? Is that why HBO had to cut 15million for there boxing budget this year?
So Bob Arum is the only promoter that makes enough cash? Other promoters don't make enough cash lets say like Golden Boy to make there own independent PPV?
Chavez Jr went life and death with the likes of Matt Vanda. He looked like garbage in his last fight. The man is not a good fighter right now... What tough fights do you want him to take? He is taking it with the likes of Vanda and his last opponent. He just not that good. Do you want him to fight Sergio Martinez? Before Chavez was suspended Arum was working on putting on Chavez-Duddy. That is a hell of a tough fight for Chavez cuz he is just not that good.
And, for the last time HBO should not be in the business of protecting fighters. They are not promters giving Golden Boy blinds and have that contract with Khan is mind boggling. For you to even try to make a case and say that is not that bad is crazy. And, to try to say 'Well look at Arum with Chavez" Is two different things cuz you not watching Chavez on HBO are you? HBO job is not to protect fighters. There job is to show the best fights possible period. But, you just don't get that. So I am done with this topic...

Thats what Im saying Arum makes more then enough cash from his fights and fighters to where he loses a profit on a latin fury card or a pinoy power it wont matter as long as that Latin and Pinoy crowd is satisfied so when Arum is making the big fights theyll tune in.
Techically you are right Chavez doesnt have a contract. But the contract he has is unwritten hes not allowed to take tough fights. It might not be on paper buts its obviosu to see. Another thing I dont like Khan but can I really blame them for keeping a potential future superstar against a guy that hits that damn hard. You say GBP rushes fighters and picks poor matchups then when they match Khan up correctly its an issue. Another thing I dont what GBP sees in Maidana other then heavy hands because he would get his ass beat by Khan.

He has money to burn? He is in the business to make money not to burn money? But, he does it anyways. Doesn't GBP have money to burn? But, they don't put indepent PPVs on...
But, the contract is with GBP/HBO... Chavez JR does not have that... You taling about two totally different things....

Because they are both over protected. Arum is trying to build Jr. GBP is trying to build Khan. Then at the end of the day Khan has fought the tougher fighters already.
But, the contract is with GBP/HBO... Chavez JR does not have that... You taling about two totally different things....
Despite what you make you think Arum has more then enough money to burn.
He just made 25 Million for signing his name on a piece of paper.

OK what contract does Chavez Jr have with Golden Boy/HBO that he will not fight a certain fighter in the next 3 fights or in a year? And, who is that certain fighter who they are avoiding? How exactly is it the same thing?

And, another thing with Top Rank. People like to shit on Bob Arum Latin Fury and Pinoy Power PPV cards. But, they fail to realize that Arum pays for those PPV's out of his own pocket. In some events he LOSSES money. HE MAKES NO PROFIT SOMETIMES EVEN LOSSES MONEY. There is a reason why you don't see Golden Boy and all the other major promotions companies doing independents PPVs. But, he does that to keep his fighters name out there to the public to keep his fighters active he does right by his fighters. But, yet fans who really don't know want to shit on that...

I never said there was nothing wrong with that. What they are doing with Khan is no different then what Arum is doing with Jr.

Big difference. Arum is paying for JCC Jr's TV dates not HBO.
Thanks for the heads up bro. Some people just can't be convinced even if facts are facts. Too bad.

I already tried to explain to him how Golden boy getting a set of guaranteed blind dates from HBO hurts the sport. He doesn't get it... I tried to explain how Ross Greenburg bends over backwards for Al Haymon fighters. But, he just doesn't get how really bad it is.... Look what they are doing with Amir Khan and the rumor of him not fighting Maidana for the next 3 fights or something like that. Kahn is a Golden Boy fighter. HBO went with it... But, he see's nothing wrong with that. So I just don't waste my time with this certain subject with him anymore...

Not crying bro, just stating facts. The GBP/HBO monopoly has robbed fans of great fights on TV.
