Miguel Cotto = Fernando Vargas

First off this is a great board. But I thought I would post this because these guys are pretty much identical. Here is the comparison Fernando Vargas 1996 Olympian Miguel Cotto 2000 Olympian Both were young World Champions who entered the Top 10 Pound for Pound. Both defeated future hall of fame fighters in close decision fights. Fernando Vargas vs Winky Wright. Miguel Cotto vs Shane Mosley. Both had signature wins over former champions. Vargas over Ike Quartey, and Cotto over Zab Judah. Both took severe beating in their 1st true super-fight. Vargas against Felix Trinidad, and Cotto against Antonio Margarito. Trinidad was later accused of illegally wrapping his hands, while Margarito was found trying to load his wraps. Both of which were discovered by Nazim Richardson. Both in their 2nd fight major super fight, took another great beating, Vargas at the hands of Oscar De La Hoya. Cotto against Manny Pacquiao. Both smaller fighters coming up in weight. Now the question is where the does Cotto go from here. I am sure he will beat Yuri Foreman, but will he go the way of Vargas and lose his next major fight. In my opinion these 2 guys are almost identical.

yeah i've been making comparisons between the two since way back in 2007. Vargas didnt rematch tito and oscar to get revenge but Cotto will comeback and beat Pacquiao in a rematch. you better believe that

Cotto is the better talent, and fighter. I suppose there is a little comparison but cotto was in my opinion on his way to greatness till that cheating cunt margarito. The jennings and clottey performances, and pacquiao loss was a consequence of the margarito loss anyone who knows this sport can see that. Against pacquiao physically miguel was there but he has since lost his edge that made him a top 5 p4per. I think an undefeated cotto on a roll, pre-margarito goes and builds on the good first round against pac and slams home his advantage, im not saying he would definitely win but it sure as shit wouldn't have been that massacre that it turned into in the second half of the fight. Cotto at very elite level does not believe in himself anymore, and is making those mistakes that only fighters who have lost that edge make, ie, anticipating punches coming back rather than trusting your reflexes and instincts, hesitating, self doubt, most of it is mental but I actually think the hard fights and making weight is starting to catch up with him, he has lost his core strength...at elite level anyway

Cotto is much more humble then Vargas. Yes that is true. But career wise he is in the same boat as Vargas. Balloning in Weight between fights, and getting a beat down in the 2 biggest fights in his career. Cotto probably has more gas in the tank physically then Vargas, but where is the man at mentally as a fighter. He took 2 extraordinary beatings, and he had 2 other really hard fights against Mosley and Clottey. Like I said we shall see. I want to see Cotto do well, he is a good fighter. But not getting a real trainer is not a good sign.

I think Cotto should try and get a rematch Margarito at least to prove it was the wraps that was the cause of the loss. i was against this at first. But now I think he should. Seriously. If he doesnt, he'll never know. It'll always haunt him.

cotto can still fight pbf and rematch mosley. just cause he got whupped by pac doesn't mean he should retire. no shit.. I still can't believe a good portion of people believe Cotto is shot just because he got beat by Marg and Pac. You win some. You loose some.

margo doesnt deserve the big fights anymore let alone get a rematch with cotto I totally agree. Even Cotto himself has said that he doesn't want Margarito to make a single penny off of him. Margacheato should just be straight up banned from the sport, that cheating rat ****.

They both have had similar events occur in their careers. That's pretty much where the similarities end. They are extremely different people and they are both different types of boxers. One thing that Cotto has never suffered are brutal knockouts, like Vargas has. I think Cotto still has tank in his gas, like other people here have mentioned.

Nobody is saying Cotto should retire, but his career resembles that of Vargas. Who knows how it will end. But he needs to refocus.
