I still think this is the hold up about the Mayweather-Mosley fight. Weve all talked about Pac-Floyd in regards to PPV so we dont need to go there again. However, lets talk about some other cases. We as fans just look at fights and say that this guy deserves this or whatever but I dont think we ever truly think about it. Recently it was Pac-Clottey where it seems like a 90/10 split or more. Everyone then replies that this is a joke and or Clottey is getting raped and so on. I was also one of those. Then I really thought about it more. When you really think about it, that is a truly fair split. Pac is ranked #1 in the world and is a mega star who has been running through everyone. Meanwhile no one in the mainstream knows who Clottey is, he just lost to a guy that Pac slaughtered, he's not on any P4P list and he doesnt make any kind of big money. Im not 100% sure but I think the Cotto fight was on regular HBO while Pac just got 1.25 buys for a Cotto fight. Just look at what happened so far with the presser, fighting in Dallas stadium, and so on. Its clear that Pac is worth 9x more than Clottey if not more. Pac's name rings all the time on ESPN while none of those cats know who Clottey is.
We can even take this back to the Oscar days. What do you think he was giving cats? It was talked about non stop on here how he was raping guys and the truth is he really wasnt. In most of those cases he was the far bigger star and money maker. Thats why everyone wanted to fight him and still took a shitty percent because they knew that crap percent was still more than they would make against anyone else and if they beat him then they are a star who can demand more. Some people did turn Oscar down, espically the second time around after they felt they won and deserved more so that is well in your right but neither side owes the other side anything. In most cases Oscar was still the star. The only 2 who have turned him down and been right is Tito & Floyd. Tito had a big name in his own right so he wasnt going to let Oscar pimp him and Floyd had that ego that he is a star now. Oscar wouldnt buy it but Floyd went out and proved it by having big sales with Hatton so he made the right decision. Mosley turned Oscar down for a 3rd fight and hasnt made shit since.
Thats why Clottey ran to this fight. He's still never made what he's going to make in this fight, he's never been on PPV, he's lost both his big fights, and he knows Pac is the man. Now lets go to Floyd-Mosley. I heard some say that Floyd should only get 55 and others say he should only get 60 but is that a real figure or does that just look right when you dont really think about it? Mosley is probably thinking the same thing but Floyd is like, NO! Mosley has fought Oscar not once but wice and still doesnt have any kind of big mainstream name. He's the #1 rated WW but Pac just killed the man that beat him and Floyd himself was #1 when he retired. Floyd is a star who has put up huge PPV numbers and is the P4P #1 or 1b fighter in the sport. I bet Floyd is telling Shane to flash back to January 23rd 2009. That was the day before the Margarito fight. I bet Floyd's team is saying that at that exact time Floyd was seen as the #1 fighter in the game and the biggest money man in the game while Mosley was seen by many as a guy who looks near done and just an opponent for Margarito on regular HBO where he probably only took 40% in that fight if that.
Now he beats Margarito after it was found that he was using plaster and has since been banned. He wins that one fight against a guy who is clearly not nearly as good without his plaster and he can get that same percentage in a fight with Floyd who is a million times bigger star than Margarito? Margarito was overrated and he didnt beat the Margarito that was killing cats. He beat the guy without the weapon. After that Floyd comes back and does a mil with JMM and Shane thinks he can get 40%? The Shane-Margarito fight was on regular HBO which shows you how big Margarito is and he thinks he can get the same cut with Floyd?. Wasnt it Shane who was just saying that he would take 30% against Pac and fight him at 140 looking all desperate and now he thinks he's a big shot and the fans are riding with that? He thinks it will look bad on Floyd if the fight doesnt happened so thats his leverage. Meanwhile Floyd is saying that they hate him anyways so he dont care. Floyd will tell him why would I fight you and give you 40% when I can go right now and fight a Cintron or Bradley and give them 10 or 20% and make close to the same thing I would fighting you for an easier fight? Fans hate hearing stuff like that but its reality. This is a business. Why would Floyd do that unless Shane is going to make it worth his wild like Clottey did?
I had a guy doing work at my home the other day and I was making him do some extra stuff but he knew that I wasnt going to give him any extra money so he was hesitant and told me that he wants to make sure he comes out on top, and then we both started laughing. Thats what Floyd feels. He wants to make sure he comes out on top. It makes no sense for him to fight a super tough guy like Shane for the same thing he could make against Cintron or Bradley or whoever. Floyd will tell Shane that "you can cut my head off by waiting and fighting Pac if you want but you know Pac is going to want 70 and maybe even more after the Clottey fight as he see's you as desperate with nowhere to go. Meanwhile if you do fight Pac then I promise you that I will never ever even consider fighting you again. If you fight me 1st and win then you know Pac will fight you but if you fight Pac 1st then I will never ever fight you so which option is better? The 2 or the 1, espically when Pac will give you even less money then Im giving you or the same? You can go fight Williams if you want who will also want more than you".
Again, no one likes to hear it but thats business and its actually true stuff. People cant grasp the concept that Pac & Floyd are on the Oscar level now and thats why guys will jump at 90/10 to fight them. Its actually even better than Oscar because Oscar at one point fell off as a fighter while these guys are still by far and away the best in the game and offering big money and nearly every opponent will be bigger than them. You think Clottey is not thinking that its only 10% but still way more than Ive ever made with way more fame and this guy is little so I should win and then I can be a big money star. You think Cintron doesnt feel the same about Floyd? or Bradley? You fans have to realize that and more importantly, so does Mosley. I dont think he does yet but he better soon enough because like it or not, Floyd is the man and the one leverage Mosley does have about the media & fans ripping Floyd if it falls through doesnt work because Floyd dont care about that shit.
At the end of the day though, I think GBP will find a way to make Shane give in and Floyd give in "some" and that will be it. Dont forget, this isnt Floyd fighting Berto. Floyd likes Berto and I think he would be willing to cave some but he hates Shane now and Shane talks mad shit so why is Floyd going to beak his neck to help him and give him more money? After all the shti Shane was talking, Floyd is more likely to go the other way and try to squeeze his ass dry

That's long!!!!!! I dont even read it.
Lets make it short.
Floyd's a ducker, a pussy and a primadonna!!!
Pac's the real warrior!!! Ducks no one!!!
ok, what do you realistically think Mosley should get? Im also sure that youre 100% ok with Pac getting 90 or more with Clottey though, right?
Mosley should get 35%. is that the real split 90-10? and if so why not?? You're not saying clottey and mosley are on the same level popularity wise are you??
In short Mosley is pricing himself out??:439: What should floyd get a 95-5 split??.. LOL.
ok, what do you realistically think Mosley should get? Im also sure that youre 100% ok with Pac getting 90 or more with Clottey though, right?
Good read and thread. Most people on here will avoid this thread cause its not flaming someone. But people can act like they don't care how much sports figures make but that is complete bullshit. Cause if that were true then why everytime a sports star possibly does something that gets him in trouble the first thing out of peoples mouths is "overpaid this or that". If they didn't care how much a person made then nothing involving overpaid would ever come from they're mouths.
Then why in your first post do you go on and on about how Pacquiao is getting 90%? If it has nothing to do with Pacquiao is making then why bring it up?
Getting what you think you're worth has to do a lot with pride. I brought up in my other post about why Mosley should get 40, so I'm not going to bring that up again. Mayweather is without a doubt the bigger draw, but Mosley deserves his cut too.
Williams would never get 50 against Mosley by the way.
It wasnt as much about Pac as it was Clottey. Clottey realized who Pac was and what both guys worth was. Shane has to do the same. Im not telling him to take 10 but he's not worth 40 at all. I also dont agree with you that 60 against Mosley is so much more than 90 against Cintron or Bradley. Also, you say that Shane has this & that going for him but its still not more than Floyd. Like Oscar was the man but in terms of fighting he had fell off so when he was fighting Floyd & Pac you could say that Oscar is the money man but Floyd & Pac deserve such & such because they are rated so high as fighters. You cant even say that in this case. Floyd is the money man and is still rated higher than Mosley as a fighter. You could say Shane is the #1 WW but he's only that because Floyd retired and many will start to argue that Pas is the #1 WW. Floyd is rated higher P4P and is unbeaten.
I know you admitted that Floyd would do better as a draw but my point is how much better? If he does 3 times better as the A side on a PPV then shouldnt he get 3 times the money which is 75? Again, thats not even including the boxing stuff where Floyd is also rated higher? Im not saying he should get 75 but you can certainly argue that and that is why Clottey took somewhere around 10
Again, its not about pride. Its about getting what you are worth. It dont have anything to do with Pac. Floyd is worth more than that against Shane, bottom line. If Shane fights someone right now not named Floyd or Pac then he gets peanuts wether you want to admit that or not. Meanwhile Floyd will do around a mil on PPV against nearly anyone. Shit, even Williams will want more than 50 against Shane and he would take less than 40 against Floyd so how are the numbers adding up? Its what his worth is. People want that in every day life. You want Shane to be worth more but he's not
Then why in your first post do you go on and on about how Pacquiao is getting 90%? If it has nothing to do with Pacquiao is making then why bring it up?

Anyone got the Sparknotes to this shit?
DLT read the rumors that may/shane fight is off and he is already making excuses as to why floyd is not at fault and shane priced himself out.
If this fight doesn't get made, Floyd is a b.itch and thats the end of it.
Look, Im a Mosley fan and he is a certified beast. I think he wouldve beat Cotto the 1st time if he had Richardson but whatever. The numbers you put up are good but he wasnt the A side. Thats why even after Vargas he still was an opponent against a nobody like Margarito(when it comes to PPV's) and it was on regular HBO. You cant get around those facts. Vargas was the man on those PPV's and they sold it like an LA fight which gave it an extra boost. Let Floyd fight Cintron right now and let Mosley fight Cintron right now and watch what the difference will be. Its night & day. You cant overlook that aspect. Shane cant go crazy. Now if he beats Floyd then he can do that after the fact. Thats why guys take less money. Floyd would want 60/40 on Shane if they were in this same exact position and this was the Floyd pre Oscar. He would want 60/40 then and everyone would pretty much say thats legit, right? Now he can Shane get 60/40 against this version of Floyd? This Floyd who was the A side of major PPV's against Hatton who no one in the US knew and JMM who everyone said was a joke fight that no one should buy?
And people know Shane mosley. Yeah Floyd is the bigger draw, but at the end of the day Shane Mosley will help bring bigger numbers to the table then anyone Floyd will fight. Sure Floyd would outdraw Mosley against anyone else if Mosley was fighting that same exact guy, but Mosley brings his fair share of the table to earn that 40 percent.
I'm not saying Mosley deserves 50 because he doesn't at all, but Mosley deserves the 40. If the spilt turns out to be 65-35, whatever that's fine. Just get the ****ing fight done and if Floyd is really stubborn on demanding 35 percent, then he is stupid for blowing this fight away.
I didn't read it,but to shorten any talk of purse & ppv #s up,most fight fans, hardcore or otherwise doesn't give a $hit about what floyd makes,or Pacman or anyone else for that matter!!147,loaded div, lots of elite fighters there, fight them or retire!!
Then it becomes just about pride and it is stupid to throw away 30 million dollars when it just comes to pride. It's not just about money and Floyd Mayweather has to fight Shane Mosley next. There is just no excuse not to.
Whether Pacquiao is getting 90 is irrelevant because Mayweather is making a gigantic payday. He is fighting the better opponent and making more, if not just as much, as Pacquiao. People would give him more props for fighting Mosley then they'd give Pacquiao for fighting Clottey.
Mayweather seems like a pretty insecure person and when it comes to PR, fighting Mosley would help his image.

Yeah, I dont beleive Marley's crap numbers either but I dont think Floyd will make more than Pac with 60 if Pac is getting 90. Also, its not just about what Floyd can make against anyone else. Its also about your worth and he's worth more than that against Mosley.

You're also degrading the value of Shane Mosley. Yes he's been on HBO a lot instead of PPV, but when he has been on PPV he's done decent numbers. He did 400-600k for his fights with Vargas, I don't remember his exact numbers. he also did 1.2 with DLH in the rematch.
He's also revaulved his career. He has earned this fight against Floyd. Margarito was the best Welter out there and he dominated. Plaster or not, Mosley had a great gameplan and looked great. I'd pick him to beat Cotto in a rematch.

Thing is, at 60% Mayweather is still making more then he would against ANYONE else out there besides Mosley. Mayweather at 60% with total PPV buys would be making more then Pacquiao would be against his fight with Clottey.
If you believe Marley's article, which I don't at all, Mayweather would be making a lot more then 10 million then what that article says.

i really don't either...putting this type of stuff under a microscope will only raise your blood pressure in the end...unless boxing tuns into a tourney type thing...the business side will always be a factor...and whether we like this or that...it's for the people trying to get paid to decide...****ed up world we live in...but there is no economic model for greed...
I read it and you made a lot of good points. The thing is though, the casual fan doesn't care about the business aspect of boxing. We want to see fights get made and the best take on eachother. Sadly, money will always rule at the end of the day.
These type of posts are needed to help some people understand just how much Boxing is a BUSINESS. Its great to watch two guys get it on in the ring - but without MONEY being involved, nobodies getting in there to fight risking physical damage for free. Training, preparation and effort is a mean to an end {To make a living in the SPORT OF BOXING}
It can be honestly stated that Boxing is a sport at its base {True Statement} BUT when purse's, managers, promoters, and sites are involved and Boxing generates a livelihood for those involved - it is in essence the BUSINESS aspects of boxing that come into play. No one with an ounce of sense can deny that Arum, GBP or anyone would be involved in an enterprise that does not produce revenue. And BUSINESS management is a means to manage that which is generating that revenue .... i.e. BOXING.
So, the OP is on point to post a comprehensive article on the BUSINESS OF BOXING .... For the knuckle-dragging few who do not have a clue.
Great post OP\TS.

Floyd will tell him that "you can wait and fight Pac if you want but you know Pac is going to want 70 and maybe even more after the Clottey fight as he see's you as desperate with nowhere to go.
I dont think he does yet but he better soon enough because like it or not, Floyd is the man and the one leverage Mosley does have about the media & fans ripping Floyd if it falls through doesnt work because Floyd dont care about that shit
This is the best post I have read all day. Great job!
I read it and you made a lot of good points. The thing is though, the casual fan doesn't care about the business aspect of boxing. We want to see fights get made and the best take on eachother. Sadly, money will always rule at the end of the day.
Yeah youre right and thats the messed up part about it but this is really these guys job and they arent all as finically stable as they seem. Shit, look at Floyd's tax problems and Shane's divorce. More than anything now they care about the business part because they really need that money
