And here's why:
In Saving Private Ryan, the Call of Duty series, Band of Brothers, and countless other media works, the Americans (good) fight the Germans (bad). In Batman, you see Bruce Wayne (good) fight the Joker (who is bad). In Spain, when they have the bullfights, the human (good) fights the bull (bad).
In none of these battles, do you see anybody (save Jimmy Conway from Goodfellas) rooting for the bad guy. We pay to see the Americans save the world from the Nazis, we root for Batman to take out the Joker, and we certainly root for the matador to take out the bull. You never see anybody paying to see the Joker beat Batman or the bull impaling the matador. In any avenue of entertainment (which is what boxing is), it makes good business sense to see the good forces win and the bad forces lose.
Enter Floyd Mayweather:
The evidence is all there. Floyd admits he's the "bad guy". We know he's not really a bad guy, however that is what he must be portrayed as. Oscar and Ricky were both the "good guys". Notice the background music when Mayweather's highlights play.
The public believed Oscar de la Hoya had a chance to upend evil and that's why it got over 2 million buys. DLH, obviously also has a fanbase. Since Floyd stopped fighting the more competitive competition, his numbers have fallen. Ricky and Marquez combined barely got 2 million buys.
This is because just like how everybody goes out to see the matador beat the bull, everybody comes to see Floyd get beat. That's why Floyd won't fight Mosley. That's why he needs to fight Pacquiao. More people want Manny to beat Mayweather than Mosley.
That is all.
this thread is insane...how does floyd not have fans? i sure as hell saw plenty of them when he was schooling marquez...and i'm a fan...my friends are fans...that's like me saying mtv is not popular because i don't watch it...i don't think the black eye peas are that well known because i don't know one person that owns their records...but they consistently sell about 150,000 records a month since they've dropped...and remained in the top 10 records sense then...
there is a clear and present fallacy here...
Holy shit I love the girl on you Avi and Sig..
He doesn't have a particularly fervent fanbase as he doesn't seem to pull in a particular demographic. People like Manny, Hatton and Tito for example have fans who're there also for patriotic reasons, which means more is at stake to them than a Mayweather fan who's basically just supporting one dude who he's never met just cos he appreciates his craft. What are you gonna cheer louder for, your country or some dude?
He does, however, attract a lot of interest regardless of the lack of strong positive feeling towards him and is quite clearly the biggest or equal biggest (with Manny) draw in the sport.
Great post. Floyd Mayweather is just some dude who knows how to fight. And run.

I love Mayweather but he really doesn't have fans outside of his friends and this website. Why do you think he tried to rally the Afro-American demographic? He's not a hometown guy or anything......
excellent analogy about Floyd's legacy...
only a flomo can say this kind of shit.
here we go with this flomo pactard talk... smh... internet gangstas again boy I tell ya lol.
Basically what it means that if Hitler has fan TODAY after all the messed up things he's done to lives I'm pretty sure Floyd has fans to lol, I know he's hated but he cant be that much hated
Floyd is one of the most popular boxers from his era. Floyd has a lot of haters and fans. He's the 2nd most popular boxer right now because people like him or hate him.
How can you sell millions of PPVs and not have a following? Don't say Oscar was the main reason why they sold million of PPVs because Manny vs. Oscar didn't come close to what Mayweather vs. Oscar sold.
Floyd acts like a jerk and asshole on camera because he knows that's the best way to market himself. He wouldn't be more popular then he is right now if he was a nice guy. He can't be marketed to people as a nice guy like you can with fighters like Manny, DLH, JMM, etc.
thank you i wish people would relize this, also if i was a boxing star i would want to be a badd guy because they make the most money because people only get interested in you when u talk shit real talk,

...ok....if floyd is a super villain, hes still yet to fight a super hero........:boxing:
Manny has a video game named after him does Floyd???

This poster/hater is absolutely correct. His logic is indisputable. Floyd doesn't have a fan base. HBO and promoters have paid him $10 to $40 million for his last four fights simply because the money was buring a hole in their pockets and they hate him so much they paid him to see him lose. The money he received had nothing to do with the numbers (400,000 PPV against Baldomir; 2.2 million against De La Hoya; 900,000 against Hatton; 1 million against Marquez) :banghead:

Weird that I usually always root for the bad guy, except if they are nazis, but I hate floyd mayweather who is supposed to be the bad guy. Maybe its because he isnt the slightest bit intimidating as a bad guy.
