Cotto has been fighting at the championship level for several years and as we know has had varying success. He's beat some big names in Judah, Mosley, Clottey, Malignaggi, etc. However, he's lost some of his luster that he had only 2 year ago. He looked, and acted, human against Margarito; he just barely beat Josh Clottey and was destroyed by Manny Pacquaio. So what should he do now in his career? Here's what I think:
He should 'step down' the level of competition for a year or so. He needs to get back some of his confidence and swagger by beating up on some lower level comp like the Mike Jennings and Alfonzo Gomezs of the boxing world. If he continue to fight at this high level I fear that he could end up like Jermaine Taylor. JT never really 'stepped down' the level of competion in his career and really seemed to burn himself out..
So I think he should stay busy in 2010, fighting 3-4 times, and then in 2011 step back up to the championship level. Why not? What do you guys think?
Foreman and Spinks would be 2 good fights for Cotto. Neither will do serious damage to him and Cotto could claim two 154 belts. Then Arum could serve him up JCC Jr. for a big pay day in Mexico City. After those 3 fights and pay days Cotto could go out on his sword against a PWill, Sergio Martinez or whoever is the hot name at 154 at that time.
4 good paydays for Cotto with one risk.
THAT WOULD BE EPIC!!!! NEED TO FORWARD THOSE EXACT PLANS TO ARUM!!!! No BS i would love to see that played out in that exact order too.

I'd be willing to put money that he calls it quits after this yr like he said. he seems to be a man of his word, he always said his goal was to retire at 30, and he seems focused on that.
I respect that. He's got $$$, his health, and a loving family. However, maybe if he does retire (like he says), he'll get the 'itch' in a couple years and make a comeback...

Cotto is taking alot of time off in between his next fight so him fighting Yuri doesnt really matter much.. I think he beats Foreman easily.. But everyone is missing the bigger picture here.. HE NEEDS A NEW CORNER!!.. Santiago is not cutting it... he needs a trainer who will be his trainer not his friend..
Agree with this, at least until he shows up different in his next fight
Unless he drops his pride a bit and hires a world class trainer who can correct even just a bit his glaring and evident flaws, the blueprint to his defeat is laid out.
He's still our boy, but he needs to wake up. His power seems gone for some reason, I'm not sure if he's facing tougher guys or his latest attempts at nutrition and training have made him seem more fit, but weaker. I know if affects me personally and I'm no athlete currently.
I think Miquel still has alot to offer. He just needs to step back a bit and reinvent himself...

I can pull a lot of Similarities between Taylor and Cotto
1) When they Both were undefeated they were beast
2)accepted every challenge at the Elite level
3)Both Cotto and Taylor's 1st losses were Via KO
4)Both were never the same after the Loss
5)Both are done
As much as it pains me to say this,I think it's time for Cotto and Taylor to hang them up for good.Maybe they both can fight once more ,but..... thats it
Both enjoy a high level of respect as Champions because of who they fought (almost every ranked fighter in their weight classes). They have undoubtedly the biggest balls in their weight divisions.
TBH, though, MAC is still in a lot better shape than Jermaine. He can still win against ranked fighters; Jermaine just doesn't have it anymore.
I think you're right. He should take a gimme, then aim for Foreman, then take another gimme back down at 147lbs (he seems to be able to make weight comfortably) and aim for Berto, and then see where he stands.
That would be ideal in my opinion.
I agree except the Jermaine Taylor thing..
The plan against Foreman is not a bad thing,
but I feel that fight could wait.. Top Rank should
set him up against guys ranked in 10-20 light
middle 2-3 figths before the Foreman fight..
anyways, I feel Cotto will beat Foreman.
I think that Cotto is planning on having 2/3 more fights then he will retire. I think that Foreman would be the perfect opponent for his return in June. After he beats foreman, maybe he will be targeting a welterweight, depending on how the fights such as pacquia-clottey and mayweather-mosley go on.
I think Cotto would've beaten any ww other than Pac on the nov 14. He showed he still has good reflexes, good physical condition/stamina, good footwork, and solid boxing overall, the only thing lacking was the power he once had. And thats the reason I dont like him in 154. He could fight Foreman in June if he wants a third title, but for his last shot at glory I would prefer him against Berto in June for the WBC title. Then, assuming both Pac and Floyd wins their next fights, have a rematch either Mosley or Clottey, the one that performed better. For his final fight it would be nice to see him up against Floyd, but since that will never happen, a rematch against Margarito (if he positions himself as a top level fighter again) in Puerto Rico and then retire.
I would have him fight Foreman then Chavez Jr. since he wants to step his fight game up. Win both then retire. since hes only gonna fight one or two fights. Thats the best way to see him off imo.
If Cotto wants to fight in JUne,Id say the best opponent is Yuri Foreman. Foreman is a decent boxer with lack of power. This is an ideal fight for cotto, going for a 3rd title at 3 weights. Im sure that cotto would beat foreman by KO. After that, it depends on how the 147lbs division is looking. Berto, Mosley rematch, magarito rematch.
If Cotto wishes to continue fighting after this year then your plan would be ideal. However, I believe he stated that he wishes to retire before the year is over so jumping to Foreman, the 'weakest' of the JMW division seems like a step in the right direction to retiring. After that he'll probably end up doing a farewell fight in PR or NYC against a weaker contender to defend his title should he win it, and call it a career filled with big wins, sore losses, highlight reel action, and tears of joy and sorrow.
Yeah, he has stated that he has 1, maybe 2 more fights in him before he retires. So while this plan that the TS stated would be good, it is most likely not going to be the case.
how bout cotto's plan to retire at the end of the yr....ever since i could remember he has always stated this....and furthermore he stated way before he even took a lost...i for one have him as my fave boxer not just cause im rican but because dude would fight anyone

I've heard that too but I guess I didn't want to believe it. I just think Miquel Cotto's a fun fighter to watch and I'd love to see him stick around for a couple more years. However, I don't want to see him lose again and especially not a KO loss. I thought Yuri Foreman looked good against the hard punching Santos and I don't know how Cotto will respond to moving up a weight class. Let's compromise then; he fights a tuneup at 154 and then faces Foreman...

Cotto should rematch Margarrito and retire...
I believe Cotto's stated that he will not let Marg make another penny off his name; and agree with this....
my opinon Cotto needs to find a good trainer, take a fight somewhere like april or may, against maybe a top twenty WW. Maybe he could fight someone with a name down the line like Ricky Hatton but is best staying away from the the best fighters for the next 2-3 fights. He should fight ppl like Matthew Hatton and see how he goes before stepping up the level of opponent. If he can get back the confidence he could go on to fight the top fighters again in 2011
