He's a solid fighter, nothing more, nothing less. He will only have a slight chance of beating Pac, I don't even see the fight being close. His mentality is not of the elite fighters out there.
clottey's biggest problem is punch volume. he would have disposed of marg and cotto easy if he was able to do that. if clottey can do it against pac he got the title.
If Clottey averaged 300 more punches a fight,Cotto wouldn't have fought Pacman!!Can't argue the dq loss other than it was bull$hit!!Ur not beating Margarito with hurt hands!!
Only has 3 losses:
Baldomir - DQ
Margarito - Was leading until the injury occured
Cotto - SD which many thought he'd won
I agree, Solid fighter. I'm glad he is getting a chance at Manny unfortunately its at our expense in the fact that Pac vs Floyd isn't happening instead.
I'll probably catch some flak for saying it but another thing to mention is that I don't think Clottey has the will thats sometimes needed in a top fighter. There are times when boxing isn't working and you just got to step up to the plate and go to war... instead he seems to have a habit of looking for excuses or a way out... like the aforementioned firing of his trainer after the Cotto fight. Or how he seemed to be pretending like his leg was hurt bad in that fight when he got body slammed... if i remember right he was on the ground holding his leg like it was hurt then got up and was fine when nobody was buying it. And then there's the question of his work rate... it felt like he had Cotto in that fight... but he just didn't go after him.
I have a feeling that for the reasons stated above Clottey has questionable mental toughness, and Pac is the kind of guy who's willing to go there and back as many times as it takes; Clottey gets there and looks for a way out.... I don't think he has the heart of a warrior and there's a good chance it'll show in this fight when Pac starts hitting his stride and raining down his nasty shots.
Not meant to be a flame or jab at him by any means as I have a lot of respect for his ring skills and he seems like a cool guy... it's also worth noting a lot of the criticism directed his way may not be his fault - it's no secret Pac probably only has a few fights left, and people want to see him land the best fights he can... despite being a solid opponent compared to a Mayweather fight, Clottey is frankly a letdown... and a lot of commentary on the fight is going to reflect that
Excellent observations and comments. Clottey seemed to be looking for a way out of the Margarito fight after he supposedly hurt his hand.
Although I don't totally agree, I can see your point. He has been really unlucky at very crucial times, and if you imagine how frustrating that is you can see why he feels he's been hard done by.
But as you say, great fighters like Pacquiao seem to shrug it off, forget about it and get back to work. I don't think Clottey is a letdown fight by a long shot, I think this as tough a fight as he could've picked, and it's a fight that adds to his resume. It's certainly a fight that Mayweather would never take.
Mayweather wouldn't need to.
Clottey wasn't on the radar while Mayweather was campaigning, and now that's he's back he's still not on the radar. Pac and the Mosely/Berto winner are more lucrative bouts than Clottey.
Clottey's ok but let's not build him into something that's he's not.
Yeah he's a pretty good fighter...that tight guard blocks a lotta shots and keeps him in fights...
I hope he wins a big fight at some point, but I doubt it will be on March 13th...at least he's gettin a nice payday

clottey's a top 5 WW period.. he'd have a chance to beat any of the top WW's at any given night or atleast give them a very hard fight. How anyone can say he is a crap fighter is beyond me
solid top 5 guy but thats it
he always finds an excuse or something,he ignores the fact that he likes to take 2-3 rounds off every fight.has lost all his biggest fights,i feel this could be the story of his entire career
Clottey has the skills and physical ability but he doesnt have the right attitude to ever be elite. The fact that he blamed and fired his trainer after the Cotto fight illustrates my point. How can you blame the guy who gave you the right tactics to win the fight, but you chose to completely ignore him?
all very good points

exactly, his attitude is sh*t and that even shines through in his interviews
seems like he wants to blame everything and everyone else but himself

I agree n the fact pacs fighting him at full weight is a subliminal hit at mayweather IMO, ofcourse roach knows clottey ain't got the stamina to deal with PAC all night hence the match up..but clottey is gonna be a tough fight atleast the first 6 rounds
