Purse bids have been called for Amir Khan's WBA light-welterweight title defence against interim champion Marcos Maidana.
The big-punching Argentine will be the second successive mandatory Khan has faced after taking on Dmitriy Salita in his last fight.
Khan knocked out the Brooklyn-based fighter in the first round.
A similar result against 26-year-old Maidana would be impressive - he has lost just one of his 28 fights, a split decision against Andreas Kotelnik, while 26 of his 27 wins have come via stoppages.
After defeating Salita, Khan expressed a desire to make his debut in the States in 2010.
If Khan choses to follow a different path rather than taking on Maidana, he will have to vacate his title, which he won with a landslide decision over Kotelnik in July.
The purse bids have been called for January 18, 11 am at the WBA's offices in Panama.
Come on Khan, step up to the plate.Youve fought no hopers and old men since the prescott defeat. Fight maidana n prove to the fans ur a real champ
No hopers and old men including the guy who beat Maidana?
what exactly is a purse bid?
It's similar to a house auction kind of. Each promoter of the respective fighters make offers of money, and whichever one makes the highest gets the promotional rights of the event and it is also how the share of the money is split. It also determines where the fight will take place also.
If Khan lets it go to purse bid in the first place then that already means he is shook. Hell, they might as well just make the fight happen before it comes down to that. Because a lot of times a purse bid won't leave the champ a good deal like some people expect. You've got to remember that Maidana has had HBO exposure and beat one of GBP's most hyped up fighters in Ortiz. Khan deserves the lion's share and everything. But I'm just pointing this out.

Kotelnik is a legitimate top 140-pounder.
For a 22-year-old, Khan's resume is good.
He has a clutch of decent level British fighters like Graham Earl, Scott Lawton and Willie Limond and a game Michael Gomez. Decent fighters like Kristjansen even St Clair.
And Salita, well if you get a 30-0 record with Salita's showing it tells you the difference in quality between the two fighters not just ability but the quality of who the fighters have been in against previously. Salita hadn't seen anything like Khan, Khan had seen plenty of Salita's.
The question mark against Khan is whether he can beat a puncher. A legitimate question. But for 22, his resume is healthy. And for a British, Frank Warren fighter his career has been moving at the speed of light.
I would have to give Khan and his camp major props if they took this fight. The rest of the division is acting like Maidana doesnt even exist. Khan doesnt need this fight yet, and it would def be a ballsy move at this point in his career. Dude is still young as hell, and going from Salita to Maidana may not be the best idea.
Make the fight.
Khan should beat him - he's better.
There is no point wrapping him up in cotton wool. If he gets knocked out again, so be it. It's not like most of us expect Khan do go through the rest of his career without it happening again.
Khan is very young. He can bounce back. And if he can't hold a shot, he can't hold a shot - he's still a very exciting and talented fighter.
War Khan!
