Yeah, I said it. You notice of how he always is going after a weak opponent now? I can see of why he fought Pavlik because everybody was demanding that Joe Calzaghe fight him and Dawson didn't look very good when he beat Glen Johnson controversially and Pavlik was a media darling and supposedly the heir apparent of Bernard Hopkins himself. And plus Hopkins did go down a few pounds to meet him at 170, so credit where credit is due.
But what's this shit about going after these guys like Danny Green and David Haye? First of all, David Haye is one of the most overrated fighters there is even though there's plenty of people that can't stand him as it is. The only guy he beat was a chinny ass Enzo and he left the division without fighting Adamek and Cunningham who both would've beaten him in my opinion. And now James Toney has called him out and Hopkins don't want none. If he doesn't want to fight Dawson because he's not a big draw, then fine. But why not revisit the negotiations with Adamek or fight Cunningham in an all Philly showdown? It's because he knows those guys stand a chance of beating him. That's why.
Hopkins' whole career has been a cherry.
I'm not gonna go that far. He beat Glen Johnson who's a good opponent and Tito was considered a legit Middleweight at the time Hopkins fought him. And Pavlik was considered Bernard's most dangerous fight as I mentioned earlier because people were beating the drum for Calzaghe to face him.
Wow TS, you have out done yourself when you accuse 45 yr old LHW Hopkins of "cherry picking" if he wants to fight younger faster stronger 215lb HW title holder David Haye.
That's because David Haye is overrated and he got KOd by Carl Thompson. Why did he leave the Cruisers without fighting Adamek or Cunningham? Why doesn't he ever entertain the thought of fighting Toney or Arreola? It's because he's not as good as those guys, and that's why Hopkins wants to fight him.

Hopkins vs Haye will never happen, why should Haye fight a 45 year old former mw, who isnt even a draw?
So you would of had him fighting the Howard Eastman's of the world instead multi division champs?
Other than maybe Chad dawson late in Hopkins career name one skilled boxer who was the same size as Hopkins that had any kind of world class skill. Hopkins made those choices out of necessity not because he was afraid of anything. His division had no talent so he went and tried to get fights against Champions rather than nobodies with marginal talant who happened to be his hight.
And mentioning pavlik is just dumb! Pavlik would have towered over middleweight Hopkins in his prime so how is he smaller. Just because hes younger and has a better metabolism than a 40 year old Hopkins does not make him smaller.
Hopkins had the choice to fight the following fighters:
Calzaghe: Hopkins was offered the then career high payday of 3m. The terms were negotiated and contracts drawn up, on the day of the signings, Hopkins demands another 3m and of course the fight fell through. Warren would make counter offers over the years and Hopkins would price himself out. He would go on to fight Hakkar for around 200k
Toney: The contracts were drawn up with Toney agreeing to Hopkins demands to get the lion share of the purse which translated to be around 3m. On the day of the signing Hopkins priced himself out.
Jones: Hopkins calls out Jones, Jones agrees for a 60/40 split in his favor Hopkins demands 50-50. This is the same Hopkins who is getting paid 200k for his fights. Fight falls through.
As for the Pavlik comment, you do know that Hopkins made his pro debut as a lhw, before moving down to smw where he would have another 20 fights before moving down again to mw? Come fight night depending on your source he outweighed him by either 10 lbs (HBO) or 16 lbs (Jack Leow).
Beating a 20 something undefeated, and undisputed middleweight champion in his 40's wasn't enough for you? It's kida ridiculous that you would hold a 44 year old to the same expectations as a 20 somthing boxer in his prime.
Why doesn't he just leave off on that note instead of fighting guys like Espino and Green and expect people to give him credit for it? I mentioned earlier that I give Hopkins full credit for his win over Pavlik.
You are totally changing the subject man. This thread is not to down play Bernard's Middleweight reign. It's to call him out on his opportunistic search of opponents as it is now. Like I said, if he wants to be mentioned with Foreman or Archie Moore then he needs to fight a guy who is a challenge.

As a mw he tried to make fights with the following fighters: Mayorga,Tito ,Oscar, Reid and Mosely
As a lhw he has fought 4 opponents who had to move up in weight: Wright, Calzaghe, Pavlik and Ornelis. He also tried to make fights with Paul Williams and Tito II

He has fought Tarver, Wright, Calzaghe, Pavlik, and Ornelas in his last 5 fights. 4 future Hall of Famers and you knock him for taking a tune up after a year off by going after the biggest money fight available?
:haha: thats funny,
tarver, calzaghe, and pavlik arent hall of famers in my eyes......
but i dont have a problem with that hopkins is doing, hes old and hes done so much already , hes already permanently an ATG in my eyes so yeaa
Toney is my boy, but he needs to retire already before he gets seriously hurt. He is already seriously slurring his words.
I think he is one of these guys that doesn't give a shit. He'll die in the ring and still trash talk to his last breathe and tell death that he'll knock him out if his hook thing gets near him
Toney will be remembered for his character for sure
Like who??? He fought Roy Jones when he was invinciable but other then that who else in Hopkins prime was worth a damn? Shit Roy Jones himself had trouble finding a worthy opponent from Middleweight all the way up to HW when he was prime so Hopkins moving up in weight would have proven nothing. And you really didn't expect him to move down in weight? The middle weight division and the divisions above it were ghost towns in Hopkins prime. Would of wins over Michael Nunn and Virgil Hill done anything for his legacy? Shit even his destruction of Glenn Johnson isn't even that great so again what would you have him do? He very well can't pull top contenders out of his ass now can he?

No. Hopkins doesn't want to fight a guy that's considered a challenge like Michael Moorer or Rocky Marciano was and he claims he's this era's Archie Moore. Lol.

Yeah it's sad that these people sound like shit and try to trash talk. I love reading toney now, but lsitening is just damn errr damn

i can't even understand toney anymore.
roy will be like that if he continues too. :nonono:

Wouldn't go that far ..
Lol he does. It's only when he fights that he uses his bullshit to hype or self motivate.
He is good at analysing fights and fighters. Damn good
I still don't get what a 44 year old fighter has to prove regardless if his last few big fights were against solid opponents and not world beaters? Should a boxer with 20 plus years in the sport have to fight super star world beaters to get credit? No! It's a miricle he can still compete at such a high level at his age. Next you are gonna tell me George Formans win over Michael Moorer was overrated.

That fight was never going to happen and you know it, Hopkins prefers smaller opponents. But to "hide" that fact he has to call out the big guys from time to time, but he never has any intention of fighting any of them.
Toney, Jones, Maskev, Dawson,Haye and Ademek: none of those fights happened and all those guys were bigger than him.
Who are these smaller opponents you guys keep talking about?
Tarver - Went on to get beat by Chad Dawson twice albeit in less devastating fashion.
Wright - Went on to get beat more convincingly by Paul Williams at his more natural weight class
Calzaghe - Did Hopkins win this fight? It's debatable I suppose.
Ornales - Who was this guy?
Pavlik - Outweighed by a big amount on fight night and reportedly had physical problems going into the fight. But like I said. It was a good win and I give Hopkins credit nontheless.

Hopkins has become such a cherry picker, and I'm not a fan anymore. | BoxingScene Community
