JMM, like Morales, knew there’s no way he could beat Pacquiao by just standing at the middle and go crazy mixing it up. He’s a kind of fighter that thrives in a very controlled environment. The key to win is to gain strategic control on the fight and he could only do that by making Pacquiao doublehearted on unloading his flurries.
floyd is a master of this, controlling the fight at a certain level
JMMs greatest achievement on his two desperately close bouts with the pound for pound king was he was able to impose his control upon pac at a certain level. Pacquaio, who ate lots of Marquez right hand, couldn’t just open fire because of JMMs exceptional counter-punching skill. The beautifully coordinated tactical fighter in Marquez connects with his right hand every time Pacquiao lunges in for his power punches. Like what Morales did to Pacquiao in their first meeting, JMM storms back with his own hard hooks after successfully withering a Pac storm. This simply made Pacquiao double hearted on unloading his flurries, effectively lessening the impact of pacs swarming offense
the right hand is the key
its high work rate that beats defensive people imo. pac will be swarming all over floyd and that forces floyd into a fight. pac will be eating lots of jabs and shots from floyd but we all know that wont bother him at all. cotto hits harder that floyd and pac just walked thru cottos best shots. sooner or later, pac will get to floyd sooner or latter into the fight. and when he does...
You assume that Mayweather will either not get hit or will take Pacquaio's punches like they don't mean shit. Mayweather will get tagged, slowmo Baldomir tagged him, I'm sure Pacquaio will too, and when Mayweather gets hit, repeatedly, he'd have an "oh shit" moment.
I agree with both of you in some way. I don't think Mayweather can just take Pac's shots IF Pac lands clean and often. But this is PBF not Mayorga or Margarito. Can Pac tag him enough and with enough clean shots? Which was my initial point.
I'll even go one better and say that if Pac can make PBF work hard in the early rounds the better it is for him since he is use to and proven at doing it.
I think everyone agree's the more of a fight it becomes the better it is for Pac. I think it has shown that punch for punch Pac can probably take PBF's shot better than PBF can probably take Pac's.
The problem is PBF is notorious/famous at staying out of fights and making it into less fan friendly boxing matches.
(Just to be clear I actually hope Pac wins since I like him more than PBF but I think PBF will win.)
1) to beat pac you gotta back him up, that's what morales did
2) to draw or get a close fight w/ pac you gotta counterpunch w/ pac
3) to last 12 rounds with pac, you gotta run
4) the right hand is not key, but you do need it. to beat pac imho, you gotta be a big puncher. styles makes fights: puncher beats swarmer
looking at the pattern of pacs fights against JMM and morales, pac would try to overwhelm Morales/JMM with his sharp and fast punches, and Morales and JMM , after withering the assault with his great defensive capability and remarkable durability, would storm back with lead rights and left hooks that would effectively drive pac into brief tactical defensive posture, forcibly backpedaling him at sometimes.
that was the blue print, that pacs backing up agaisnt morales you were saying was just the result of it. the key was the right hand when played in a perfect counterpunching gameplan.

Counter punch, move then when Pac makes it on the inside hold. Pac is not a stalker like Cotto or Castillo. It took him a long time to find a worn down, beatup Cotto who was back pedaling Cotto to survive.
Now exchange a worn down Cotto with a fresh PBF (because he will do it from opening bell) and we might just have a long boxing match.
Pac jumps in and out with flurries but he doesn't really box from the outside great. I'm not sure how effective that jumping in and out will be against PBF. PBF feels very comfortable with pot shotting guys then moving and/or holding.
Can Pac turn this from a boxing match into a fight? That I believe is the real question. If it stays a boxing match PBF probably wins. A fight Pac probably wins.

Cotto is not a counter puncher. JMM and Morales has had successes against pac on the inside precisely because of their counterpunching skills.
Can pac force floyd to a fight? What would floyd do when hes got a guy whos constantly coming forward and throwing lots of power punches at a variety of angles? still, is solving pacs puzzle for floyd

The only thing special about Pacquiao is his offense, particularly his speed and power combined with the weird angles he throws from. Those are a problem because boxers don't train like that in the gym. On the other hand, Pacquiao is not too hard to hit.
The pacquiao now is alot different from the jmm/morales days, I think he's got exceptional lateral movement and some boxing ability, but after cotto I don't see how pbf can hurt him like jmm/morales did..that said pbf is a bigger puzzle for PAC so pbf by decision ;)
four fights ago ......
he hasnt changed a great deal just hasnt met anyone since that can shut his offence down in the same way
Pac can be outboxed in the middle of the ring and when moving away from him. Cotto did it. The problem was Cotto and his team (as well as the rest of us) believing that exchanging on the inside would benefit the naturally bigger Cotto.
That's where he got caught and was never quite the same after that second knockdown.
The thing is Cotto has much more power than PBF at this weight and didn't really seem to dent Pac much. Can Pac FORCE enough of those exchanges to where his possibly superior stamina (use to fighting high output fights), power and durability become factors.
I think its still a little bit more of a puzzle solving PBF to be honest.
