LOS ANGELES—The biggest fight of the 21st century will have to wait until after May when the Philippine national elections are over, according to Manny Pacquiao’s lawyer Frank Gacal.
Pacquiao is focused on fighting in the political arena rather than setting a date with boxing destiny, a showdown with former Pound-4-Pound King Floyd Mayweather Jr.
"As of last night, Manny said he doesn’t want to fight in April or even May. There will be no fight. Maybe it will come after the elections," said Gacal to Philstar.
Reports in recent days have surfaced that a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Jr. bout, one of the most anticipated fights of the year that pits two of the best fighters in the world against each other, is nearly complete with the date being set either on March 13 or May 1.
Reports from Yahoo! and ESPN quoting unnamed sources said Top Rank President Bob Arum has come to terms with Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KO) and has flown to the Philippines to get an agreement with the current Pound-4-pound king Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 KO) to seal the deal.
The AP reported Mayweather Jr. has not signed a deal.
But Gacal said the People’s Champ informed him that a fight in March or May would be too soon.
"Everything will depend on the developments after the elections. But again, as of last night, the March 13 and May 1 dates for Pacquiao’s next fight are out," said Gacal.
Pacquiao is currently in the Philippines where the boxing champ has begun his campaign for a congressional seat against businessman and brother of the incumbent Roy Chiongbian. Both men are vying to represent the southern province of Sarangani.
Roach
Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach believes that a mega fight against Mayweather Jr. in March or May also would be too soon.
A week after Pacquiao’s bout against Miguel Cotto where the Filipino champion scored a TKO victory, Roach told the Asian Journal that he and Pacquiao would need more time to prepare for a fight against Mayweather Jr.
"There’s no way it’s going to happen that soon," said Roach in a previous interview with AJ. "There won’t even be enough time to promote the fight and I want Manny to rest."
Roach recently confirmed that sentiment to the LA Times.
"March 13 is too fast a turnaround," Roach told the Times. Roach is in England preparing his other fighter Amir Khan. "Manny has a broken eardrum. I’d like to have more time. I hope the fight happens, yes, but I want us to be in the best possible shape."
Fight of the century
It seems inevitable that a Pacquiao vs. Mayweather Jr. bout would happen. Both men would draw the attention of boxing and casual fans around the world in a fight that should be the biggest moneymaker of this generation.
Most boxing pundits expect a Pacquiao-Mayweather Jr. match to generate more than $100 million in revenue.

I don't know anything about the politics in the Philippines, but I suspect that Manny isn't going to go far with the political arena just so that the people would make sure he stays in Boxing. I think if Manny wins in politics, there would be no boxing at all for him.
OH STFU please, your such a diehard nuthugger, I cant believe your defending manny on this too.
Manny's TEAM wanted the fight in March, Floyd agreed, and now they pull some of this bullshit.
Floyd did not agree until Manny said he no longer wanted to fight in March or May. That's like getting confronted, doing nothing about it (getting punked basically) and then waiting until the guy that punked you walks away to start talking shit. Kinda like a Chihuahua... That's what Floyd would be if he was a dog, a Chihuahua...

Right now? Are you taking pictures?
Sorry I implied that. Was referring to the reports that Pac already met with Arum. Pac was seen smiling and keeping mum of what happened. Yes, they have already met and Arum will have the conference today. As soon as I go off work, I'm going to the TV until I get the news(I'm in the PI, so we get it first hand). The waiting has been screwing my day at work.
I for one believe that Pacquiao really wants to capitalize on his popularity for the election and he has every right to do so, i dont know what the political situation is for Pinoy people but he seems humble and willing to step in to a difficult situation for his people, Political life is not easy.
He can fight anyone he chooses later. If he doesnt atempt to get elected now then he may lose the opportunity to do it in the future and he may also lose his popularity by next election if he loses before then.
If he loses this election then he can focus entirely on boxing but if he wins then we can all say goodby to Manny the boxer.
I dont think arum cares who wins or loses, he will get his and he is approaching it as he should, as a promoter who needs manny to give him the biggest pay day of his life.
Go Manny, live the life of service and give for what you have been given.
The Fight should be in September. Floyd would be able to fight Pacquiao healthy not with a broken eardrum..
Personally, I think Floyd suddenly "wanted" the fight only after Manny said he would wait until after the elections. But if Floyd is genuine about wanting to fight Manny (I don't think he is) he wants it earlier as opposed to later. A healthy, stress free (post election) Pacquiao will pose serious threats to Floyd and I doubt he takes the fight later in the year. He'll claim that he gave Manny a chance and he blew it. Floyd's sly and this is how he'll quack his way out of the fight with Manny.
If Pac wants it he'll get it. Ultimately it comes down to Pac, not his lawyer.
There is still a ray of hope. We'll hear it tomorrow.
If it doesn't get signed in 2 weeks, I'll be the first to say Pac is quacking.
