a little bit wild when fighting?
I'm planning on starting boxing soon and I decided to watch a couple amateur bouts (at the request of some club owners) so I did.
What I wanted to ask was (and this is the laymen in me asking) is do these fighters appear to be a lot more wilder when fighting? I see a LOT of swings, almost like they're out of control, and some of these people are in their 25th bouts or more. I'm so use to watching professional boxing that it appears the pro's a lot more controlled and nonchalant in their approach, yes?
So to those who have been boxing for a while, have you noticed that you go a lot slower in your attacks/choices when swinging during your fights? Is this 'control' something new fighters ignore or something that only comes with experience?
edit: Also, I'm 22, that isn't too old to start, yes?

In the ams, the opponents are of less a caliber than in the pros. If you open up in the ams, chances are you can catch your opponent..if you open up in the pros, chances are higher that YOU will get caught.
So it has to do with respect and skill level.
Plus.. ams are more of a point game than the pros. So people will try to stack up them points...

I box amateur and I think one of there's a couple of reasons:
Firstly inexperience - its easy to lose your cool and go hell for leather and forget technique and form. I imagine experienced pros are better at controlling themselves.
Also amateur bouts are 3 x 2mins so i suppose they want to make as big an impression in that time - were as pros have 12 (in most cases) to pace themselves.
I've had a few fights boxing and Muay thai and theres a big big difference between hittin those pads clean and crisp maintaining your technique and an actual bout but like i said earlier i think its ultimately down to experience.
p.s. never too old.
Well, for 1 amateur bouts are shorter which allows for a more frantic pace. Also, from personal experience, I was always very nervous / hyped up before fighting, especially at the start of my career. It was difficult to stay calm and controlled. Over time, however, I learnt a bit more control.
it's all about the points, look at demetrius andrade fighting in the ams, plenty of punches, if your fast flurry on his arms with some follow ups through his guard to keep him from throwing
just busy busy for 3 rounds
With Amatuers they have 6 minutes to show they deserve the win and it tends to get sloppy. I fought at golden gloves for 3 years and it is always hard to adjust cause how sloppy it tends to get and when it is an un-orthadox fight. I been training with some pros and I tend to do better with them when I spar (fight) cause U have a pace and everyone once in a while a quick sprint of punches come out and I preffer to spar that way
I don't box, but I imagine it's because of the point system...they just want to score some points.
I personally don't like it as much cuz it looks sloppy.
Amaetuers have scoring system right? wild hooks look powerful i guess and earn points
also i have sparred nd no matter how much you think this fighter should have done this or that, the pace is so fast and exhausting that you can't think or do what you want to or know. Plus pro's are likely to be fulltime training and have teams. that's why i give so much respect to boxers who think so fast and what skills and speed they have over 12 rounds. tv and even real life doesn't do them justice until u box yourself
AM is for learning though
