"That was the army tournament in 1991 when we were in the Russian Army together. I stopped him the first round, I hurt him 3 times. His trainer threw the towel in the ring and stopped the fight". Hit play >
He's 15 or 16 at the time, and Oleg was 20? People really reach sometimes. Floyd Mayweather was beaten and admitted defeat against Martin Castillo TWICE. I wonder how a fight between those two would have turned out when they were both adults.
Lol this dont mean shit!!! Does he think VK hasnt improved at all since then!!!
Listen to the interview before you criticize. http://www.blogtalkradio.com/on-the-ropes/2009/11/23/on-the-ropes-episode-49-guests-oleg-maskaev-holly-holm-and-kevin-johnson It starts at 26:00 in.
Vitali had a deal on the table 2 years ago and blatantly ducked Maskaev.
This is what bothers me about Andre Ward. Legend has it that he hasnt lost a single fight since he was 12 years old, and was undefeated as an amateur from the late 90's all the way up to his pro debut. Guys who don't lose, don't know how to lose.
Vitali was accustomed to losing in the amateurs that is why he was able quit against Byrd so easily, hard-headed pricks like Ward never quit.
Is there some other Vitali that Oleg is talking about? The WBC Champ Vitali would KHTF him out the ring.
If they fought now it would probably be a very different story but Oleg 1st round KO'd Vitali back in the amateurs. Getting defeated as an amateur is very common among all boxers.
Vitali was a pro kcikboxer while still an amateur boxer.
I'v read that Vitali was injured going into the fight and his trainer stopped it so he wouldn't worsen the injury cuz he had a more important kickboxing fight a few days after that fight with Oleg.
It could just be hearsay. From the interview Maskaev said he had Klitschko hurt more than once in that fight, it sounded like he wouldn't be in the condition to fight soon afterwards.

its funny how tunney/carnivore was making a big deal of haye being ko'd in the amateurs while vitali and wlad were never ko'd even making a thread about it . MOst people including myself said that there was no point in comparing an amateur career with a pro one because lots of future champions were stopped in the ams. It came to no surprise that carnivore didnt agree with this and said it did count . I cant wait to see how he explains the double standard once he starts defending vitali.
I recall that thread and I left a similar reply. It's common knowledge that a lot of elite boxers lose in the amateurs by KO or decision.. e.g. Mayweather was defeated more than once in the amateurs.
He's just trying to get a fight with Vitali now by saying I already KO'd him in amateurs. Ehh, doesn't matter. Even if he faces Vitali, he stands no chance.
Oleg was a talented fighter with a good right hand. But even at his best he still wouldn't have beaten Vitali. To beat Vitali you still need to take a few shots. Maskaev has never had the whiskers to take a shot or two. He certainly has no chance now.
It's insane to here how far these fighters have come. 18 years ago these cats were 10 years deep into fighting. Just insane the amount of work they've put in.
That said, Vitali would beat on Oleg until they stop it. I see an early stoppage if this fight ever comes off.
