.....because Pacquiao just jumped up in weight rather than taking his time and competing with a lot more people in the 135, 140 division?
Alexis Arguello took his power all the way up to welterweight. He competed with a lot of opponents in each division before moving up. Pacquiao isn't as active as Arguello was when you compare careers. No-one complained about Alexis using roids. Thoughts?
The less your drain yourself the better. If you look at Pacquiao at 130 weigh-in against Marquez rematch--he looked gaunt. It's amazing how he looked, something similar to how Hatton looked like in weigh-ins recently at 140. Pacquiao walks around 153-155. He looked much better at 140.
yup.
at this stage 140 is best for pacquiao.
he can probably still make 135 , but he'll have to cut a lot of weight.
Even if you account all that contract disputes, Eric Morales trilogy Pacquiao should've atleast fought 2 more fight times 2006/2007. To me that's simple. the only reason is because Pacquiao wanted to start a movie career and enter politics.
pacquiao fought 5 fights in 2006-2007.
pacquiao usually only fights 5 times every 2 years.
1 year he fights 3 and 1 year he fights 2.
it's been like that since forever.
look at last year and this year. 2008 - 3 fights , 2009 - 2 fights.
look at the year when he beat barrera. 2003 - 3 fights , 2004 - 2 fights.
if this gives such an advantage why do most fighters cut significant amounts of weight for fights ?
Oh come on? You're not seriously asking that question right? But if you are, it's just too simple.. Because not everyone has the physical and mental capacity to do so.
This is what makes Manny Pacquiao really special, we all know that he's probably a real legit 140 pounder according to his body frame and walk in size, it's his capacity to dehydrate himself which not too many people can do that made him successful 120 pounds up.
He's been walking in fights at 145 even at the lightweight division. He's been rehydrating as a jr welterweight for years now. But is ok weight wise during weigh ins.
For one, Floyd was a 106 pounder at age 16.
Manny was a 106 pounder at age 16
Floyd went as much as Jr Middle
Manny's max so far is 144.
Now tell me, why does it seem that it's just Pacquiao who's being questioned? And it's not as if Pacquiao's case is an isolated one.
So many people went from really low weight classes to higgher weight classes, difference is, Pacquiao was winning world championship during these weights while others were fighting in the amateurs. Which, pacquiao didn't have the luxury to experience.
its simple if we are talking about why pacquiao didnt spent more time fighting in the lower division if theres a rule that a fighter should have a minumum number of fights before going up in higher division pac will comply and he never did what he had done perhaps in a longer time, theres no rule on the minimum numbers. its in the ability or capability of the fighter thats limits his ascension. if pacman lose to delahoya it would have been a limiting factor. but theyve succeeded and thereafter one after the other opportunities presented themselves so they grabbed it. it picked the imagination of those around pacquiao and the fans, the questions arises like can he make it passed diaz, they went for it, and he did. what about delahoya, bigger taller, pac was challenged, and was given the weight of 147 go up if you want, so he went for it, and whatdya know. talks circulated that delahoya was weight drained, but if thats the case its not the fault of the pacman he was challenged and accepted. end of that story, it was all delahoyas fault underestimating his foe. he trained and prepared for the fight but because of his ego what he brought to the ring, he came up short.
then sinced there was a talk of a drained foe, they picked somebody who at first was conceived to be in his prime and considered undefeated at his own weight which is at 140 lower than 147 (but still bigger tho). so say roach lets go for it. thinking prolly that people will not accused them of the same weight drained sheet. pacman made it in astonishing fashion. seeing that it was so easy, they thought they can cover a lot more ground taking the higher notch so the rest is history.
whats really obvious here is that the mystic/legend of pac is rooted in his eagerness to take everything to a higher notch, he is not only accepting challenges only from other fighters but he is also challenging himself. he is not afraid, he relish the fact that he is always competing, mind you, not only with others, but with himself. he always as if want to test his limits. he plays chess, among other sports, that says a lot of things about him. he has this competitive spirit comparable to few.
so in a nutshell, like what once asked of a conqueror of mt. everest, " why did you climbed that mountain? and the answer is " because its there". and as for pacquiao... because its there, and he can, and he did.
pacquiao came in at 145 in his last fight at 130.
he was 149 in the cotto fight.
only 4 lbs. difference but i'm sure not having to cut 15 lbs. for the weigh in helps him a lot.

he couldn't. that's what i'm telling you.
he had 2 fights with morales at 130 in 2006.
in 2007 , he had to wait for gbp and top rank to settle their disputes.
when top rank and gbp settled out of court , that's when he finally got a chance to fight barrera and marquez rematches (which is what everyone wanted to see)

It depends on the fighter.
Not counting the Margarito and Pac fights, Cotto's chin looks a lot better @ 147 than 140.
Freddie Roach decided to bring Amir Kahn up in weight from 135 to 140 because he thinks its a better weight for him. He's probably hoping his chin would be better at the new weight since he will not be as dehydrated making weight.
slower fighters at 140 compared to 135 too.
could help khan's defense , though he'll be giving up some of the size advantages he has at 135. though he's still plenty big for 140.
if this gives such an advantage why do most fighters cut significant amounts of weight for fights ?

it's a thin line you have to walk.
coming in bigger fight night is an advantage. cutting too much weight however is a disadvantage.
not cutting too much weight is an advantage. coming in smaller fight night is a disadvantage.
that's why all these guys have nutritionists and weight/conditioning coaches.
they have to find the perfect balance.

I'm talking about how active Pacquiao should've been in each division. Had he been more active in 2006-2007 at 130 division and jumped to 135 a lot sooner and taken out Casamayor/Diaz and gone to a more natural weight sooner and shown his power--Mayweather Sr would not have said anything about roids.

From the pictures I've seen of Pacquiao at 130, 135, Pacquiao has been draining himself for a while now. I'll try to make a slideshow in the days ahead. 140 seems to be his true natural weight at the moment.

Pacquiao should've been more active in 2005-2007. Anyways, he has a perfect chance to show his dominance at 140 with the winner of Timothy Bradley vs. Lamont Peterson.
Why would he fight B+ fighters at this stage of his career?
there are alot of things that dont seem quite right with the way he has brought his power up, along with speed, more endurance it seems, cant remember a time were a fighter seems to have either kept or improved upon every physical gift they have
he had to throw everything but the kitchen sink at david diaz before stopping him ... but yet can blitz his way through cotto like he was nothing ... it is strange
but bit too easy to throw accusations out without proof... although i guess we thought the same about RJJ at one point right ?
1. pacquiao has slowed down a bit watching the pac-cotto fight
2. he got a bit stronger because he's gained a little weight and he's not weight drained at 140-147.
3. pacquiao was more devastating at 122-130. he use to throw one punch ko's with regularity in the lower weights. the only one he has koed with one punch is hatton above 130.
4. david diaz is a tough sob. he use to fight at 140 and 147. he's only been stopped once aside from pacquiao and that was at junior welterweight by kendall holt.

His massive legs made it possible to do it.
take the morales trilogy out? that's the fights that made him a star.
he fought barrera 1 (#1 at 126) in 2003 , marquez 1 (#2 at 126) in 2004 , morales 1 , 2 , 3 (#2 at 130) in 2005 and 2006 , barrera 2 (#3 at 130) at 2007 , marquez 2 (#2 at 130) in 2008 , hatton (#1 at 140) and cotto (#2 at 147).
you don't get a better run than that.
name all the guys who had a better 5 year run.

so you think after the hatton fight, bradley and peterson were as big and more challenging a fight than cotto and mayweather? gotta be kiddin me.
I'm telling that's the only way to show it. whether they're easy or not--Pacquiao has to show dominance. Winning a fight in each division doesn't show that. Do you get what I mean? A win over Timothy/Peterson would validate Pacquiao's skills in that division. So I understand why they're some haters out there. Pacquiao is definitely top 20-30 on my list of ATGs. It's up to him where he is placed in the end.
Okay, take the Morales trilogy out--Pacquiao should've been more active, to dispell all the critics, and done the same in the 135 division and now 140. That's the only way to shut critics up. No amount of roids can substitute skill. He needs to do it. If Timothy Bradley wins--he will be lunch meat for Pacquiao.
