totally agree and why in the world did his corner apply no ice or anything on his swelling face? Chavez was a disgrace and Santiago appeared to add nothing in the way of specific instructions. For Miguel to continue his career properly he should completely change his team.
If Cotto wants to continue fighting he has to fire Santiago for the sake of his health, get a better trainer that can correct his mistakes and teach him some new things and change his attitude to let the trainer do his job and make decisions, otherwise he should retire.
I think it should have been stopped earlier, but i think Miguel/his corner didn't want to quit like they did against Margarito. Cotto had nothing to prove though, anyone knows when a fighter takes that much punishment that he should throw in the towel, there's no shame in that.
Totaly agree with Roach on this. Cotto was taking an uncessary beating, he clearly was no longer trying to win the fight but they kept sending him out there. Another thing to note is that Santiago had nothing of substance to give Cotto in terms of tactics and game plan changes between rounds. All I heard from him was words of encouragement....sure it may help but very little. They needed to change up their game plan on the fly and didn't.
its boxing and cotto is a boxer, jesus who wants to see a fighter quit on the stool
But who wants to see a fighter brain-damaged for life.. it's a fine line I think..
I would rather see a boxer quit on the stool and lose with dignity than going in the ring and not fighting, taking more damage and just back-pedaling (some fans were booing, and even Pac looked like he was miffed that he wasn't fighting).
Back-pedaling is not fighting, it's running away. Sometimes, you just know when you are beat and not needlessly put yourself in danger, especially when you have a family to take care of.
A warrior's heart is only useful when you are still competitive - when that ceases, the mind should take over. Something Oscar found out when he fought pac.
Remember what Roach on 24/7 said about Santiago not really the one in command in that corner.
Well, that's exactly what happened. Cotto's corner really wanted to stop the fight, but, Cotto got his way. Santiago should've just overrode his fighter's insistence to continue and threw in the towel, plain and simple.
Spot on...
hey, and why did he start out-boxing pac so late, and then he quicks out-boxing him again when he was doing so good???? the trainner was giving him really bad advice in my opinion.
i agree with roach..... it should be stopped earlier
santiago should be fired ASAP.... now i know why roach is super pissed with that bum trainer. cotto deserve a better trainer, maybe he can now get roach, roach already stated a while back that he wants to train miguel
