First of all, props to Pacquiao and also congratulations although he will not be checking this thread out to know it. To ridiculous, disrespectful Pacquiao fans, there is nothing from me. I think, in life, you must always show class in victory or defeat and some posters are lame. Giving Pacquiao a bad name is the only thing they can do.
Anyway, Cotto had a great start with the jab but his overconfidence, perhaps ego, got the better of him. The jab was constantly landing on Pacquiao and had he used it consistently, this fight might have been different. From the 4th round on Cotto's gameplan was terrible and he abandoned what was giving him good results in favor of a firefight. We all saw the result.
I think Cotto took a lot of unnecessary punishment and the corner did not do a good job. Honestly, after this I think Cotto should consider retirement because first the Margarito situation and now this. His style makes him get into battles and they take a toll on you. He's young and should be healthy. I don't know if he could be interested in rematching Margarito, but if so, he should retire win or lose.
I know some might disagree with me, but look at what happened to Erik Morales, who's one of my favorite boxers ever, because of the many wars he had. He was "old" at age 30. I don't think Cotto should get to the point where he experiences something like what happened to Erik.
I would like to conclude by stating that I'm not a hater. Some blind fans might think so, but I'm just thinking that there's something more important than the sport and that is his life. I was supporting Cotto 100% for this fight, but it was clear he could not adjust well, his corner was not up to the task, and the beating was probably worse than the Margarito fight. I would like to see him bounce back but I have my doubts about his chances. Well, thanks for reading and trolls, stay away. I have no time for nonsense.
Cotto can still fight on, dont know why everyone keeps saying his ruined after this. Cotto accepts he lost to a great fighter and Pac is one of the greats of all time. Cotto being my 2nd favourite fighter, was sad also to watch it, felt he started off very well, but came away from the jab, started trying to bang which he would usually win but Pac is just too fast.
I do want him to get a new trainer, the inexperience showed last night when Cotto is in that situation.
Just to clarify, I did not mean he's ruined. Nobody knows that right now and only time will tell if Cotto still has the fire and desire to resurrect his career. I hope he does.
By the way, Malignaggi is one of my favorite fighters right now.

Cotto needs Freddie
By himself, Cotto is already an excellent fighter. Needless to say, his game still has a lot of holes that he needs to plug. He needs a trainer who can help him plug those holes and whose strategy will make full use of his talents. To me, that means Freddie Roach. And why not, Manny's near retirement anyway, and apart from Rigondeaux, no one else in Freddie's current stable comes close to MAC in terms of raw talent.

Agreed. Cotto got off to a good start, but once he started exchanging, I sort of saw it going downhill for him. You would have thought that he would stick to what gave him results instead of trying to brawl. Maybe his "size" advantage really got to his head, and he thought he could bully Pac around.. I was also one of the people who thought Margarito took something out of Cotto, but I refused to accept it, especially for this fight but he just wasn't "there" somehow... Like you said, he needs to do some soul searching before he decides to go at it again.
I agree with your assessment. I too support Cotto 100%. Cotto lost his composure when he was knocked down the first time, he tried to regain it but Pac didn't let that happen. There were a few moments where he begin to find his rhythm, but Pac being Pac came back with those fluries. I can't really write more about this fight (it has to sink in a bit)...but I can say this...Pac did a great job sticking to his game plan, and is one hell of a fighter.
I see we agree on this one. I still think Cotto's decision to mix it up was not good. Perhaps after winning a few more rounds it could have been tried, but when the fight is still up for grabs and Pacquiao is starting to get confident and throwing more. If you watch rounds 1, 5, and a portion of 7, you see a much different fight when Cotto is being patient and throwing the jab. Still, Pacquiao ruled the night and props.
well written

You should blame his corner too, i really do not see any strategy done there.
Still, i want Cotto to fight again, i consider him one of the greats in boxing today, higher than punk floyd!
wow ur really confused cotto was a good fighter he is obviously not anymore to rank him infront of floyd only shows ur ignorance he has lost twice brutally.. I like cotto i think he was a good fighter with lots of promise however he needs a real trainer he needs to discipline his self and get the help he needs....he has no defense and alot of bad habits....he can become great again with help
I was impressed by pacquiao however i was very dissapponted in cotto he needs a real trainer he was very undisciplined in that fight and it showed...Freddie was right about his green trainer....cotto didnt look sharp at all his defense was horrible and he tried to punch with a puncher and lost...
i wold love to see pac vs floyd because i truly belive pac is not that skilled he is very gifted with speed and power but his technique is not their...saying that a fight against floyd is interesting because floyd is more skilled but he doesnt throw enough punches and manny throws alot...but will manny get frustrated when he cant hit floyd and lose composer??? I wanna see this fight lets make it happpen at 147 champ....
Dude Cotto didn't quit he was just getting beaten up, the fight could have been stopped early but Cotto carried on for the pride of Puerto Rico. He's a great man and has heart if you've followed his career you will know Cotto is a very tough cookie. Did you expect Cotto to go all out? He had nothing left by round 8 but still managed to get to the 12th round, i dont call that quitting man. Cotto fights for pride of himself and his Puerto Rican people.
Cotto didn't quit but he wasn't trying to win the fight at a certain point. Santiago should have to stopped it by that point.
Man I'm a cotto fan manny fought a great fight now lets see him fight May Jr at 147 not 144. Cotto should fight one more fight and call it a day retire young, healthy and rich.
I think you'll see Cotto vs Floyd before you see pacquiao vs floyd. I'd like to see a mosley vs cotto rematch.

I'm a cotto fan also but tend to agree with you. Too much punishment last 2-3 yrs. Also, his corner wanted to get out of cotto what he had no more and that is not good. He might need an experienced trainer if he feels he wants to continue. Much props to pacquiao !!
im not a hater of anybody, but cotto quit. He was not trying to win the fight from about the 9th onwards. Thats quitting. Might as well have taken a knee. Its not a gameplan to run away and potshot when your at least 7 points behind.

First of all, I did not call you a hater. I wanted to point out that haters gave him credit. I have not seen enough of your posts to accuse you of being one. I just want to leave that clear to avoid any misunderstanding.
I don't know what other boxing fans look for when naming a quitter, but I don't think he quit. He retreated once he had received a beating because he wanted to finish the fight on his feet, because of pride. Taking a knee or sitting on his stool after 7 or 8 rounds counts as quitting, but that's just how I see it.
The gameplan was not to run originally, he did that to survive. His gameplan was to outfight and bully Pacquiao. Once it backfired, he had to resort to retreating because there was no way out once Pacquiao got confident enough to initiate the exchanges. So, in the end, Cotto tried and fought to the finish, just got outclassed and beat, but you're entitled to a different opinion.
FUKK NO!!! COTTO STANS MUST FEEL MY WRATH!!!! THEY HAVE BEEN TALKING SHIT FOREVER!!! THEY WILL EXPERIENCE HELL!!!!
let's just face it cotto is not in pac's league.
if cotto wants to continue, he needs a new trainer and he needs to take 3-4 fights to get adjusted to the new trainer.
Morales was a true warrior and never ran from anyone. do not mention cotto's name next to morales!!!!
JUST FACE IT!!! COTTO IS A VERY GOOD WELTERWEIGHT... RANKED #2... BUT HE IS NO MATCH FOR A TOP 10 ATG!!!!!
i thought pac was just a flyweight
u after timing tool
I totally disagree and even Cotto haters have given him credit for dying with his boots on. The fight could have been stopped 3 or 4 rounds early, yet he insisted on going on until the end. The ref stopped the fight, Cotto did not qut. He just chose the wrong gameplan and lost to a great fighter.

lost all respect for santiago, his corner was the worst i've ever seen in a title fight, they werent telling him anything at all that could have helped. i dont think anything would have helped, but it would have been nice to see some kind of instruction in the early rounds when he could have stemmed the flow a little
I agree with this, the inexperience of Santiago showed. Once Cotto started back peddling and getting hurt, his corner did nothing except encourage him to keep going. WTF, how about some tactical changes in the game plan? Santiago is green as hell.
