As we all know Cotto has 3 major issues:
1. He leaves himself open for uppercuts.
2. He has problems with fighters that can take his punches.
3. Can get hit with the overhand right.
The first on the list well we can rule out since Pac isn't known for throwing many uppercuts, and let alone devastating uppercuts that will knock Cotto TFO. That leaves #2, can Pac take Cotto's punches!? This is something that has been argued over and over again on NSB, and I respect everyone's opinions BUT I will say he has never been in the ring with a heavy hitter like Cotto that is for sure. Finally, that leaves #3...I think this could be a good weapon for Pac, but I just don't see it getting threw Cotto's defenses that much to be effective.
All in all, could Pac win this fight!? I certainly agree, but he would have to take the Calderon approach, and be VERY careful while doing it. Again, Roach knows Cotto's habits but the thing is...it is impossible for Roach to teach a fighter after all these years how to throw a devastating uppercut, how to take a punch (which cannot be taught), and how to penetrate a good defense against a fighter like Cotto. Can it happen though!? Anything can happen in boxing!
true but he holds it up and allows it to be pulled over his left hand. dont be condescending without watching film my dude. clottey would pull cotto's right down with his jab and leave cotto with no way to defend. Its cool to take boxing 101 but when you are continually eating straight rights due to not adjusting thats when its a bad habit. I boxed too and you push you don't allow someone to pull your hands down. he allowed his hands to be pulled down continually vs zab he did it too. When u have a discussion on boxing watch tape dont read books
Well my friend I was the head matchmaker for a boxing promotional company and I watched film for hours a day, not to mention I have seen every one of Miguel Cotto's professional fights.
I didn't read 2-4 but Ive been boxing on and off since I was a little kid and when you fight a right handed boxer you parry/"block" the jab by cupping your right hand and pushing your opponent's jab to your slightly to your left as well as slightly down. I mean this is boxing basics man, lol. That is not a "bad habit" that is boxing 101.

i dont know who said cotto only has three bad habits i can name 3 more
1. cotto blocks jabs with his right hand defensively. So if you jab and he blocks w the right you can bring it down and both of his hands are disabled to block leaving him wide open for power punch. Very weak against simple 1,2 mosley and clottey did this well at times. Kellerman continually said he couldnt see vs clottey but clottey did this time and time again.
2. cotto must sit on punches to punch efficiently. Cotto's biggest fights have been against opponents who either come straight forward or stand in front of him, when he has faced elusive comp namely zab (and even chop chop who foolishly decided to go to war) he's had trouble getting any power behind punches until they slowed down. If manny doesn't slow he doesn't get hit.
3. cotto has a tendency to switch southpaw vs southpaws. this is not going to be his gameplan and if he allows manny to dictate his fighting stance he will allow manny to dictate tempo which does not bode well because he does not want to throw 60-80 punches a round although he says he is prepared on 24/7
4. Cotto often will wait for opponent to strike first, especially if he is not dominating. This is why mosley outlanded him in most rounds (esp. powershots), clottey victory was cotroversial, Zab had great early success, Chop Chop had a shot etc. This last fact brings to question cotto's mental toughness he has heart for days but can he stick t a game plan? we will see next saturday

with all respect to om, this thread fails. he mentioned miguel's weaknesses, not his habits
Nah many peepz have made some good points on this thread. Call it what you want though...habits or weaknesses. I don't give a d@mn!!!
Some great points on this thread! When I heard the fight had been made, I was a little disappointed (I wanted Pac/Mosely) but I'm pretty pumped for it now.
If Cotto has anything to exploit, you knwo Ffreddie found it and has had Manny working on it. I'm of course rooting for Manny but I like Cotto as well (Clottey fight was one of the best this year).
This is gonna be a good one.

with cottos stance when his right hand is pulled down he cant bring his left hand up to block. simple wrists are crossed easy to understand.
Cotto is very controlled and technical which is a positive attribute, but since zab he has not taken risks coming forward to leave himself open for counters meaning he will want to stop to sit on punches (except gomez and jennings). true body shots will slow opponents but like i said if manny doesnt eat too many of those cotto is pretty stationary. BTW cotto was getting worked early in zab fight dont be confused cotto just cemented zabs reputation of fading late.
mc switches rarely against righties but often against southpaws to open up his jab. he did it for at least half of the second rd on judah fight and almost everytime he was RETREATING and being tagged early. The only time he stopped is when zab slowed due to body shots. Work on that memory brother, he is a counter puncher but if he allows mp to control style of fight he has a good chance of giving up rounds due to mp's dictating fight. Also Cotto is not knocking out mp so points are critical.
Lastly cotto did not go first until fighters let him. clottey mosley only outpunched him in rounds when they went first and cotto would let them.

you should know what habit is. those are not habits, its his weaknesses

Um... I can maybe see where you are going with number one, though I really have no idea what you mean. If you're referring to Cotto's shell defense he rarely does it... Then with your second point you say Cotto has no power unless he's planted... if he's the pursuer then he's going to be coming forward and getting maximum power in, if he's fighting off his back foot then you have a point. The problem is Cotto was in control both of those fights and Judah slowed down because of Cotto's body attack with his power making Judah slow to a crawl.
You're third one makes no sense because Cotto only switches southpaw when hiss opponent is retreating or on the ropes. Its a very quick and subtle adjustment to essentially see your opponent coming mirrored at you, its meant to throw you off, he probably doesn't even fight in southpaw stance for one minute in the entire fight. No to mention this "flaw" has worked far more than it has failed, nice try though, ESPECIALLY against Quintana and Judah. And finally, Cotto waits for guys to throw first... he counters just as much as he is aggressive, you can't counter and then be the first guy to attack.

Cotto was hurt with a right hand (Hook) from Corley over Cotto's hook. He might be working on that.. I have a hunch.
Cotto needs to watch out.. Its the punches that you don't see that will end your career.
Pac has a quick uppercut from the outside and he will throw it and land it. Cotto is vulnerable to right hook as well, just look at the Corely fight. Cotto is vulnerable to straight lefts through the guard.
Pac has vulnerabilites as well, we'll see who capatalizes more.
If I hear "former 106 lb'er" once more I'm gonna smash my computer to bits.
I was once a former 106 lb'er too, when I was about 11. In fact Manny is a former 7lb'er, cause that's probably about as much as he weighed at birth.
It's irrelevant what Manny weighed 15 years ago because he was a child. Since then, he grew. Manny is now a legit Jr. WW.

I don't know if Pac can take advantages of those three bad habits of Cotto's. It won't be easy for Cotto, but Pac is not the type of fight who typically troubles Cotto, a huge, granite chinned pressure fighter.
1. Didn't say that he hadn't used it before...it is just something that he doesn't use very often.
2. We don't know that yet!
3. Any fighter can get hit with something any day.
1) he's throwing a lot of uppercuts on the mitts, so he will be throwing uppercuts in the fight most likely
2) there's no way a former 106 lber should be able to take cotto's punches
3) yeah, but cotto gets hit with right hands
Cotto is strong as an ox, no doubt. I'm not sure who hits harder between Porter and Cotto either, but Shawn has fought guys as heavy as 170 (his pro debut), has apparently knocked out heavyweights, he looks a little faster than Cotto, too, and along with the extra weight combined with Porter's very good speed (I think he's faster than Miguel) I would guess he hits pretty damn hard.
The difference is though, he's sparred Porter with headgear on. However, even with headgear it's not impossible to get knocked out in the gym, he should be feeling those blows of an 165+ lb guy, possibly heavier. Porter's HUGE!
Shawn only had 10 pro fights so far, but his amateur background is really solid. 280 amateur fights, World Golden Gloves champ, US National champ, 2008 Olympic alternate, etc. This kid knows how to punch properly by now. Also spars with Dawson and Pavlik.
Yeah I will give Roach that...he picked a great sparring partner in Porter! If Pac has adjusted to his power he might be able to adjust to Cotto's. With that said, I am glad that Cotto can also box.
If he spared with Pavlik doesn't that mean Pac can also go up to 160 o.o
^^^Nah! I mean lets say Cotto sparred with Tyson once! Can he now go up to heavywieght!? ....Ummm....NOPE!
Porter was a great choice for a sparring partner. Like you said, dude is big, I was glad to see Pacquiao gettin' roughed up in there, hopefully it helps him get used to those heavier shots.
