$500,000 was ten times more than Pryor's previous career high, when he fought Cervantes.
But in retrospect, Pryor got more money to fight a much more beatable opponent (Arguello), so it probably worked out the best. Leonard most likely would've beaten Pryor, as would the other top 147 lbers at that time.
Pryor didn't turn down 500k, he just didn't want such a small piece of the pie.. He was undefeated, a champion, a rising star, and leonard wants him to come up to his weight and accept 1/2 a mill, while leonard pulls in 4 mill?
Pryor wasn't worth any more than $500K at the time.
Shit, he still isn't.
Take Arguello off of his record (who was already showing signs of fading even pre-Pryor I, mind you) and Pryor's record isn't anything memorable at all.
Pryor's one of the most overrated fighters I can think of offhand.
Old news.
But I'm glad you posted it ; maybe not we'll have less morons spouting shit about Ray being afraid of Aaron just because they hinted at it on an episode of "Legendary Nights".
Ray would've taxed that ass.
Gee, 500k for a champion to come up in weight and fight the next division's champ who will get 12 million??????? I'm shocked he wasn't falling over himself to sign the contract... Question, if you were wearing Aaron's Pony's, would you have taken it? nice try at sensationalizing/debunking though
500k to fight the biggest star in boxing,500k being by far the greatest payday of his career at that point............damn right I would have taken it.
Where did you get 12 million from?
Post fight interview
I posted this in the history section but I figured it would get more attention here.

yeah most people knew this. well most real boxing fans anyways.
These so called hardcore boxing fans are so hardcore that they don’t know any HARDCORE boxing history...
* People forget or dont know, that Sugar Ray Leonard never fought Pryor, when Pryor called him out in his face!!!
???????????
Aaron Pryor is my boy. But I look at Leonard as the greatest boxer I've ever seen. Pryor would have lost.
A fight with Pryor and Whitaker would have been a great one
It's not really about that tho.for years now, people have been claiming that Leonard ducked Pryor on seeing a clip of Aaron Pryor calling out Leonard at a press conference on the legendary nights episode.
This myth has been used to unfairly discredit Leonard I feel.
