Prelim fights are:
Khan vs. Maidana - WBA title
Alexander vs. Ortiz - WBC title
Final is the unification fight between the winners.
I feel this tournament is a tad bit hollow, considering Bradley, who is considered the top titleholder, isn't included. I would say Pacquiao should be in it, but he obviously has NO TIME for this sort of chump change considering the fights he has lined up.
I think Khan would beat Maidana. I think he'd approach the Maidana fight in a manner similar to the way he fought Kotelnik, despite the big difference in power between Maidana and Kotelnik. He'd most likely stay on the outside behind a high guard, come in, land/throw pitty pat combinations and win on points. As long as he doesn't get dragged into a fight, I believe he'd win on points.
Alexander-Ortiz is interesting. Ortiz has all the ability to win this and the final, but I question his mental state and his heart when it comes to the sport. Due to this, and the fact the Alexander is talented himself, I see a points victory for Devon, but would not be surprised if Ortiz takes it.
In the final, I see Khan taking another points victory over Alexander. I think Khan would fight the same as he would against Kotelnik and Maidana. In fact, I think he'll fight in that manner for here on out, as it'll protect his fragile chin.
You should have allowed multiple votes.
Do you think there will be multiple finals to this tournament? I mean, there is, ultimately, only one right answer.
If Khan didn't have the chin problem, he'd walk this IMO. That said i still think he'd win these tourney based on his superior boxing ability compared to other three guys in the poll.
He showed signs of a good defense in his last fight very quickly under the guidance of Freddie Roach and the more time they train together i don't think Khan's chin is gonna be as much as an issue in the future as people on here make it out to be.
Khan beats Alexander in the final BTW.
I've got Ortiz over Khan...
I think Khan can partially fix his chin issues by extreme conditioning and get the win over a fairly slow Maidana.
Ortiz will probably beat Alexander. A good boxer puncher can usually beat a slickster, because they have the technical skills to keep up, and can get more credit from the judges for each punch because it is perceived to be harder.
I think Ortiz will probably be able to hurt Khan a few times and take this one by decision.
I'm glad there are so many differing opinions on this. This should be a good thread.
Actually if that's the bracket it looks like HBO might be trying to set up Ortiz-Maidana 2.
I don't think Alexander has the power to hurt Ortiz so that should be an interesting fight, I might edge toward Ortiz.
Khan can outbox Maidana but if he gets caught, he's going down.
