Wishful thinking? Promoter Bob Arum believes Pacquiao-Cotto could approach the record 2.2 million pay-per-view buys that Oscar De La Hoya-Floyd Mayweather Jr. did in 2007.
The Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez fight in September did a little over 1 million.
“This will far exceed Mayweather-Marquez,” he said as Cotto was finishing up his workout. “We’re hoping it approaches the 2.2 million De La Hoya-Mayweather did. The interest is so great and it’s a competitive fight.
C’mon, 2.2 million?
“That’s what the cable systems and DirecTV and Dish Network are predicting,” Arum said. “There’s no tracking yet. We can tell by the amount of money and resources that have been thrown into this. We’re anticipating those kind of numbers.”
Arum said Cotto brings in about 400,000-500,000 buys mostly from hardcore boxing fans, Puerto Ricans and other Latinos. The rest, he said, will be the result of Pacquiao’s growing popularity.
“Manny Pacquiao is bigger than life,” he said, “They’re intrigued by Pacquiao. He’s unlike any boxer they’ve ever seen. The guy keeps getting better as he goes up in weight. The guy has so many talents outside of boxing –- politics, music, everything. People just can’t get enough of him. He’s really crossed over into the mainstream.
“What fighter in recent years ever dreamed of getting his picture on the cover of Time magazine? His picture will be on the Asian edition of Time. That never happened with De La Hoya or Mayweather.”
Arum said the sports editor of the New York Times told him he’ll be covering the fight himself.
“And the New York Times,” he said, “hasn’t covered a fight in five years.”
Must be a big fight.

if this hits 900 Ill be surprised. No knock on the fight its a great one but Manny paciuao is not 1/4 as popular in the general public as arum thinks he is.
I just do not think this fight has been marketed to the public enough to really be pushing more then a million. A million with this level of marketing would be a huge success, somwhere between 750 and 1 million would be my guess but that is a still a massive event.
Doesn't he do that with all of his PPV's? The numbers get out anyway.
They have to be released HBO is a publicly traded company they have to report all income.
Arum does not like releasing PPV figures though so he does not have to be 100% accurate when he talks about the numbers.
over 2 mil? HA!...aint no fight ever gonna go 2 mil again
especially without De La Hoya's name on it
pfff...there isnt that many filipino americans living here to reach 2 mil..LOL
How much would you like to wager that Arum withholds the numbers when they come out?
Watch him not release the 840K.

There is no way this fight will do 2.2 million. This fight is not being heavily promoted and neither fighter is talking trash. Freddie Roach is talking trash, but thats it. You can tell the difference in promotion quality. I say it does a 950k-1 million. However, they do have big fanbases though.
If this happened, two things would happen.
1)FMJ would have to eat his own words a bit.
2) Every Pac fan who has been spouting how PPV numbers are not important would be spouting these ppv numbers as proof as to why he should get the lions share.
LOL. I'm a pac fan and though I don't really care much about ppv, I can see that happening. Must remember not to get carried away. Because if that 2.2M happens,a pac fan will now have ammunition against the talking briefcase. :D
If this goes over a million I would be shocked. Cotto has a fan base but he isnt a household name like Mayweather, nor is Pac. I think this will do a less than Hatton vs Pac
Pacquiao is a house hold name. He just isn't American.

in my opinions
cotto brings in = 1 mil ppv buyers
pac brings in = 1.5 mil
a record 2.5 mil ppv buys, ties hoya - pbp
Cotto cant bring in 1 mil
more like 550k and
pac 750k
total 1.3 mil
me thinks
hahah
I predict 1.3 million buys, I don't think it does more then that but stranger things have happened I guess.
Yeah like Floyd and JMM doing 1 mil
that was surprising
but good
I see no problems with what Arum is saying. Think about, pbf/jmm did a mil and everyone knew what was going to happen and add to that pbf is a non exciting boxer who fights like a coward according to some. So there is no way in hell that pbf outsells the 2 most exciting fighters in the world and the best southpaw ever.
Think about it!
This SHOULD definitely outsell pbf/jmm by a large margin.
