Anyone see this last night on the ESPN 30 in 30 series? It was a documentary about the Larry Holmes v. Ali fight. It was a good documentary but really sad how Ali went into the fight already showing the signs of deteriated motor skills and slurred speech. It was also sad how the ref would not stop the fight and let Ali take a brutal beating. Sorry if this is a repost.
It is Billy Collins Jr. after the fight with Luis Resto in 1983. The fight where Panama Lewis was found to have removed the padding from Resto's gloves and enhanced his wraps. you can read about it here.

Another good Documentary about that: "Assault in the Ring"
I'm surprised Ali didn't go broke from all those guys he had to pay around him. None of those clowns would tell them the truth and were just feeding him BS
its amazing how much ali took and was still staying and wasnt knocked down.
the frazier fight was his last big fight, i think without manilla ali would have still something left to give holmes a great fight.
he was pretty good after the foreman fight when he fought wepner and lyle.
the 3.fight against frazier was just too much.
I didn't see the doc, but Ali took a lot of weightloss pills that made him come in very light and lokking like a million dollars. Unfortunately they also weakened him so much that he literally had nothing left after round 1.
I heard he took the pills for a thyroid condition that was diagnosed wrong. That's why it made him seem all crazy before the fight
Did you guys see Ali hit the speed bag then all of a sudden he forgot what he was doing or his timing got all jacked up for like 5 seconds. Sad stuff. Holmes is a good guy but pretty funny how the random lady walked up to him and said I HATE YOU
I saw that too....I was flipping back and forth between that and the Laker game.....
Yeah it was sad how Ali went out....but it's very rare to see athletes go out on top...most of the time these dudes hang on waaaaaay to long and this ends up happening to them......plus they were very clear as to why they came back....money.....greed.....these words came out of the trainer's mouth not mine....they just wanted one last pay day....
All that being said....it was sad that Ali had to take that beat down when he really should have...but I don't really think the ref was at fault.....I've said this a million times and ill say it again....it's the corner's job to look after their fighter...a good fighter will not quit on his own (should not quit on his own)....a ref's job is to call an even fair match...and in extreme on the spot cases of someone being hurt to jump in....but on a steady beatdown like this..........the corner is 100% at fault....
True indeed
Saw it as well. Sad indeed. Whats up with all the pills he was taking?
Yeh, that was crazy, it was almost like Ali just wanted to get in there and just survive.
Sorry bud I did see you posted that as well but I didn't click on yours cuz your avi sickens me.......hahahaha.............WTF is that??????? it looks like a muthafukken alien or something......

I found it interesting that they said angelo didn't have the heart to stop the fight on his own, but Herbert from the NOI had to stop the fight from the stands! i thought that was bit funny

Ali's speech was slurred years before that fight.
I don't think you should blame the ref. Rather the corner. I find it amazing that Bundini wanted Ali to have one more round when it was obvious that Dundee's decision was the right one although a little belated.
