Glen Johnson: "Well, Joe Calzaghe and I had 3 dates to fight and he backed out of every one of them.." Hit play for a 2 minute clip where Johnson reveals what happened during the potential Joe Calzaghe match up(s).
Calzaghe would not have beaten Glen Johnson and he knew he would be beat so he baulked... Frank Warren told the same story as Johnson just has... Calzaghe knew he could not beat Glen Johnson
At the time, Glen Johnson would have probably been the toughest fight Calzaghe had ever been in, and it may have changed the course of his career, win or lose. If Johnson had won, it's possible there would have been a rematch.

well actually glen johnson was able to win a title at light heavy where sugar ray robinson failed and quit
glen johnson>sugar ray robinson
He didn't quit, he collapsed from the heat, and his corner quit for him. He couldn't talk. Ruby Goldstein the famous ref collapsed after the 10th rd and they had to have another ref to continue. Maxim weighed about 185 and Robinson weighed about 155. Robinson was well ahead on all cards, if he could have just stood there and avoided Maxim even if he'd lost all the remaining rounds he'd have still won the fight.
no disprespect to joe, but we should all know(esspecially his fans) that's he's a bit of a frightened child, he was suppossedly scared of fighting lacy, good thing his father got him in the right mindstate
i would'nt say calzaghe was not afraid of johnson, which he could've been
but im also not gonna he would've lost to johnson because i just dont think he would
i can see calzaghe winning a ud only if he grew the balls
Gosh do you sound simple-minded. Calzaghe is one of the best fighters of the past 20 years, undoubtedly the best by far of all the 168 pounders since that division began.

Glen's style would have caused some serious problems for Joe.
I guess since Dick Diggler never heard anything about it, it must not be true because Dick is the expert on all things boxing!!"peeleft:
Lol.....i guess when you're out of arguments, you turn to playground insults.
i like jonson but hes just talking silly
i would like too have seen joe fight him as he is a tough guy and it would have been a good scrap, its a shame calz hands were so fukked he would have won a UD
Frank Warren did a great job of protecting his fighters. He protected Hatton for 35 fights. Unfortunately for them(Ricky Hatton for example), once the protection ended, they got exposed. If Warren had any inkling that Amir Khan would get KO'd by the guy who knocked him out in the first round, he never would have put him in the ring with him. He did a great job of protecting Calzaghe and, fortunately for Calzaghe, 168 was a weak division during the time he fought in it. If Calzaghe had fought at 160 or 175 during the main part of his career, he would have been beaten routinely by quality fighters.
Finally someone that knows what they're talking about, Warren has to be one of the most talented promoters that i have ever heard of, He would line up bums for his fighters while proclaiming them to be the second coming.
Sometimes he has fighters who are actually good like Calzaghe or Naz but he still doesnt get them to fight the fights you want to see unless the risk is stacked in their favour along with the money.
Problem is the guy knowns how to sell a boxer to the public and the media, He knows how to make the media love a boxer because he has a team of PR people who puts out the right message about certain fighter just to gain public votes.
Just check his history and the list of his fighters with records of 35-0 or 40-0 who hasnt really fought anyone of note even at age 27 plus, He tried to do the samething with Maccarinelli before he got expose against Haye(They though Haye was weight drain and wouldnt have taken the fight if Haye didnt conned them into it).
Joe Calzaghe clearly ducked Glen Johnson. It's pretty sad that Calzaghe is being viewed now as some sort of a legend.
Has far as i know calzaghe was suppose to fight Johnson at 175, He was also suppose to fight Clinton woods at 175 but for some reason the fight didnt happen also.

Probably wrong then, I never heard anything like that.

Lacy was an unbeaten world champ at the time, and Kessler is better for Joes legacy than Johnson would of been
Lacy was exposed as being overrated in the Calzaghe fight. I knew Lacy was overrated before the Calzaghe fight, but I thought he would beat Calzaghe because, quite frankly, I never thought much of Calzaghe. Lacy has gone steadily downhill since the Calzaghe loss, proving my point. You are right. Kessler is better for Calzaghe's legacy, but Johnson is a much better fighter than Kessler and there is a good chance that Johnson would have ko'd Calzaghe. I think that is one of the reasons Calzaghe avoided the fight.

Kessler is a great name to have on his record but I think Johnson would have been a highly respectable opponent. It's a strange situation because after Calzaghe pulled out of the fight, Johnson went on to beat Roy Jones and Antonio Tarver who were very significant victories, maybe each more significant than fighting Calzaghe would have been at the time.
How do you know? I read, ON THIS SITE, that Calzaghe wanted Johnson to come down to 168 and Johnson said he couldn't make that weight. That was long after the Johnson/Jones fight and before Calzaghe moved up to 175 to fight Hopkins. The information may be wrong, but then again, it could be accurate.
Probably wrong then, I never heard anything like that.
They did negotiate for the woods fight but they fought over everything from money to ring size. Frank warren is a very difficult promoter to deal with and unless the money and his fighters chances are greater than his opponents he would never risk them in any fight.
wit that statement i wonder if warren is the main cause for joe staying in britian for so long
