I been watching these vids of Roger Mayweather training a few fighters. These vids are actually from the 90s and he gives good instructions on his mitt work. Check the vids below..
note: the quality and the sound is not the best, but he gives some good insight and the defensive tactics that he teaches are great IMO.
part II
part III
part IV
that's all roger is good for, pad work.... he don't have any strategy.
100% right.
After Shame Mosley rocked Mayweather, the advice from the corner was "box the man, all you got to do is box the man". Real inspiring and strategic words.
Strategy can be overrated if you're fighter doesn't have the tools to execute it anyway. I'm sure Nazim gave Shane two very sound strategies against Floyd and Manny, but what use were they when the man in question could not execute them??
countering isn't a strategy, its a tactic.
nah... they had no strategy. floyd went in there and noticed how much bigger and faster he was and he was content to beat jmm on points. floyd counterpunched because that's what he does.
I don't think roger watch much jmm tape at all. floyd probably didn't even watch one tape of jmm to study his style and break it down.
they don't know strategy, they just know tactics and how to get in great shape. they don't talk about it because they don't have it.
I think that's just a tradition that they are used to doing. it has nothing to do with strategy.
i somewhat agree with you in that Roger is a better mitt man than a strategist, but you're fooling yourself if you believe Floyd does not watch tapes of other fighters present and historic. He is a student of the game, and there would be more about the history of the sport and style matchups in his brain than the majority of people in the sport. He is a complete LIAR with that bull****......he does adjust on the fly, but he always has a strategy going in about what things will work and what things will not....whether he will move and potshot, or stand his ground and pressure etc etc.
At the end of the day he is his own corner becasue his boxing knowledge is vast. Growing up he's learned from his father and the "old legendary Michigan trainers" as he put it. Just like Mike Tyson you can be assured Floyd has watched hundreds of hours of fight footage old and new, and knows the old fighters very well, and has learned from fights in the past what tends to happen when certain styles clash.
Floyd Sr is a better tactical and strategic trainer than Roger, but isn't as good a mitt man. You have to give it to Roger though he does give good advice when it's needed and he is usually calm in the corner......but most of the time he doesn't have that much to do.
lol this was an old thread that i pulled back up guys, i dont think this discussion is still ongoing. mittwork is designed how to react in a match/fight. i think Mayweather's mittwork comes closest to the real thing.
Pullcounter what exactly do you qualify as a strategy then? What are you looking for?
strategy means an overall general/gestalt pre-conception as opposed to momentary reactions which is called tactics
How in the hell is Coach banned?
They banned by old account for "spamming" because I kept posting the same thing in December 09 about the Manny-Floyd drug testing thing. I've petitioned for them to unban my original account, no luck though.
You guys can talk bad about the Mayweathers all you want, but they know boxing as well as anyone in the world. Roger is a damn good trainer, and was tough as nails fighter.
i was just checking this stuff out.. the thought that went into making that pad work.. pretty genius. it's designed with sparring to make the fighter self sufficient, to cope with any type of fighter, any situation. i'm gonna check it all out.
Dope post, Coach Webb. It gave me a better understanding as to what Roger and Floyd are trying to accomplish during their pad routine. Come to think of it, it is their pad routine. Also, it's cool to see Roger give instructions upon the execution of the Pull-counter maneuver in video 5 and to have witnessed it used against JMM, recently. Hell, I see Mayweather's pull counter gif more so than any other gif from that fight.
To have knowledge means you can emplore strategy. I mean come on man, I know they act dumb but they aren't stupid when it comes to boxing. All you have to do is listen to Roger or Floyd talk about boxing and you will see they know a lot about fighters and how to counter them. That's strategy...
countering isn't a strategy, its a tactic.
I used the Jmm vs Manny fight because everyone was wondering how Floyd was going to approach the JMM fight. A lot of people said Floyd might come in and rush JMM, use his size and strength.
Instead, he countered a counter puncher because it was the best STRATEGY and paid off.
nah... they had no strategy. floyd went in there and noticed how much bigger and faster he was and he was content to beat jmm on points. floyd counterpunched because that's what he does.
He learned from the Manny fight and understood that even though he had the advantage in almost every category, he would still counter punch with JMM and it paid off. Floyd not losing a round..
I don't think roger watch much jmm tape at all. floyd probably didn't even watch one tape of jmm to study his style and break it down.
Believe me, they understand strategy and understand boxing. I have heard him talk many times about certain fighters and how to counter what they do, even historic fighters. They know strategy, they just don't talk about it.
they don't know strategy, they just know tactics and how to get in great shape. they don't talk about it because they don't have it.
They don't even allow cameras in the sparring sessions.....they are just funny like that.
I think that's just a tradition that they are used to doing. it has nothing to do with strategy.
that's not strategy. that's just basic boxing.
roger doesn't teach strategy, he teaches tactics.
knowledge? yes. strategy? nope.
nah, they know how to fight, and they know pad work and tactics... what they are missing is strategy.
what does this have to do with roger?
you also need padwork and someone to teach you technique.
also, you need a strategy to beat your opponents.

if you watch the vids, they are good teaching tools. he says that he doesn't have a strategy..ok..but by the teaching on these old vids, his strategy is obvious...HIT AND DON'T GET HIT.
that's not strategy. that's just basic boxing.
roger doesn't teach strategy, he teaches tactics.
naw your wrong, he just doesn't talk strategy. In DLH book he talks about Roger and Floyd Sr. and gives them a ton of credit for their boxing knowledge.
knowledge? yes. strategy? nope.
They know the game, believe me it's just they are very secretive about it.
nah, they know how to fight, and they know pad work and tactics... what they are missing is strategy.
Proof is in the pudding and when Floyd fought JMM, I KNEW he wasn't going to rush in. That's what made JMM so effective against Pac because he was able to play counter puncher and conserve energy and counter Pac with his boxing skill.
I thought he won the second fight, I actually thought he won both but that's another argument.
what does this have to do with roger?
It's just a good technique to build speed, faster temp and defense. I like it but like I said, ultimately you need to spar and spar a lot to be a good fighter.
you also need padwork and someone to teach you technique.

Roger is overated.. Tell me who's he trained that was good other than floyd?? And floyd is a natural talent, he could have been trained by any other trainer and he'd still be great.. I'd take roach's mitt routine over roger any day because roach simulates where the punches need to be thrown and stuff.. I'm not trying to be an expert here but tell me who's he trained other than floyd??
did you watch any of the vids? its some good teaching in the videos. he explains the mitt work and style that he employs. It isn't just useless punching.
