MANILA, Philippines
– Bad news, boxing fans: Don’t expect the biggest fight in the sport to happen any time soon.
This came after Bob Arum, promoter of Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao, publicly expressed doubt on the possibility of his prized ward facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a bout pitting two of the world’s top pound-for-pound fighters.
The ageless promoter said he’s having doubts that Pacquiao will take on Mayweather next if gets past Miguel Cotto on Nov. 14 (Nov. 15 in Manila), citing problems that may possibly arise during negotiations.
“I don’t think (Pacquiao-Mayweather) will happen within the next year because of all of Mayweather’s posturing, the trash talk. That impedes any realistic negotiations. It would just be too difficult,” Arum told Michael Rosenthal of The Ring.
Even Pacquiao’s chief trainer Freddie Roach is on the same page as Arum.
“It seems like there’s a lot of things working against this fight ever happening,” Roach earlier told The Los Angeles Times. “It makes sense. It’d be a great fight, but it seems there’s a lot of distractions around it. I don’t think it’s going to happen.”
It was earlier reported that the issue of the purse split may derail a Pacquiao-Mayweather duel, as neither fighter is willing to settle for an equal sharing of the pot.
Mayweather came out of retirement to school Juan Manuel Marquez — Pacquiao’s arch-nemesis — cruising to a lopsided victory last Sept. 19.
Asked if Pacquiao is doomed to suffer the same beating as Marquez had if the Filipino goes up against Mayweather, Arum sang a different tune.
“Styles make fights,” Arum said, citing an age-old boxing adage.
“Mayweather is a defensive specialist and Marquez is a counter puncher. Mayweather forced Marquez to be aggressive, which isn’t his game. Marquez needs his opponent to be aggressive. When Manny fought Marquez — and it’s not the same Manny now — Manny was the aggressor. Marquez was able to win a lot of rounds because he’s a good counter puncher,” he added.
Arum even provided additional examples to stress
his point.
“Just because A beats B and B beats C, it doesn’t mean A will necessarily beat C. Look at the heavyweights from years ago. George Foreman could fight Joe Frazier and Ken Norton a hundred times each and the result would be the same, a Foreman knockout. Muhammad Ali could fight Joe Frazier 100 times and every one would be a war. The same with Ken Norton; he just couldn’t figure out his style. Then you put Ali in with Foreman and he’s able to knock him out. Manny is a different type of fighter than Marquez,” he said.
And what about the same fight which he thinks won’t happen at all?
“I think Pacquiao and Mayweather would be a fascinating fight,” Arum quipped.
It should be a 60-40 split for Mayweather. He put up bigger numbers with common opponents so to say that Pacquiao should get 50 automatically is wrong in my opinion. Mayweather-Marquez put up more than both Pacquiao-Marquez fights put together.
This plus Mayweather's a ***. He should have stayed retired if he don't want to fight anybody good.
i want to see floyd finally fight a top ww and not get away with avoiding one yet again. its been what 4 or 5 years since he got to ww. pathetic.
Again, it doesn't matter who PBF got people to watch his PPV. It is a numbers game. Floyd numbers shit on Pacmans number. Floyd should get the bigger slice regardless
what you floyd fans dont realize is no other fighter or no other fighters fans give a **** about the numbers if the best is fighting the best. floyd and his cult is the only ones running round throwing ppv buys out there. think about it most ppv best sellers are american b/c i think (correct me if im wrong) we are the only country that has to play for fights. only a top foriegn fighter will sell here. how many times has fighter from another country came out and we was like who the **** is that? thats why to foreign fighters wont have the same numbers as in the american fighters. for example alot of bars didn't show pac/jmm but damn near everybody showed pbf/jmm. thats why that number shit dont mean shit to me. i want the best fighting the best. i wish they never started releasing the ppv numbers to the public.
Mayweather is the PPV King, P4P King, and CompuBox King.
Pacquiao is a one-dimensional joke who got outboxed by an washed up Morales on the brink of retirement and schooled x2 by an undersized old Marquez.
Nyahahaha :fest30::fest30::fest30:
CherrypicKING maybe.
Arum and Floyd need to grow up and handle business LIKE MEN. Quit all this bickering back and forth in the media. I'm sick of it, true story. If Manny wins, this is the biggest fight in boxing and they ALL will get a bunch of money. So they both need to shut their mouths and if Manny wins, deal with negotiations....THEN. I know that Floyd and Arum been having beef for a minute, but I am convinced that Arum doesn't even want to put Manny in there with Floyd. Arum, if you really don't like Floyd or think that he is a coward, through your BEST fighter at him.

and CompuBox King.
Well that is vitally important isn't it, maybe he is entitled to 70% if he is CompuBox King.
How does Floyd need Pacman???
Dollars my man, dollars.
fighting Pac is the most profitable fight for Mayweather, tell me another fight Floyd can make that will earn him as much?
In fact don't answer that until we know the result of the Cotto-Pac fight.
But I will say this if, and its a big IF, Pac stops or KO's Cotto then......

yeah of course, boxing number 1 recognized pound for pound fighter is going to take less that 50% to face Mayweather.
c'mon get real, do you honestly think Arum, Pac, Roach or whoever, is going accept that? No chance.
Lets face facts here, Mayweather needs Pac, not the other way round.
I'm in the UK and didn't have to PPV the fight.
Lets not forget 3 simple facts when it comes to PPV figures when it comes to Mayweather:
1) he fought DLH, who had a big following in his day, mainly female, by still big numbers all the same.
2) he fought Hatton, who is the only British fighter to assemble that sort of following, a lot of British figures I suppose would added into the overall figures.
3) he fought Marquez after 2 years out.
They both fought those three on PPV. At different times, but as far as leverage, that doesn't matter with those two the way they are going to handle it at the big table.
Those are the numbers people seem to be talking about and Floyd had the better numbers with each.
I'm not sure Pac has better numbers even with Morales and MAB compared to Floyd's other PPV events.
And even with Cotto, Cotto is a big draw so it still won't be all about Pac.
It won't be 'THE' anticipated fight anyway once Cotto KO's him..
This is true. All this talk means nothing because Cotto could possibly beat the shit out of him...but we'll have to wait and see. Roach still took this fight based on how Cotto has looked of recent after Margarito plastered him so Roach will have to be proved wrong. I'm hoping for the best of both to show up so that it will be a great fight.
Floyd has been proven he is a bigger draw than Pacman. Look at the PPV numbers, its not even close

Floyd has better numbers but the fight should be 50/50.
I'm guessing they both will make more with 50% split fighting against each other than getting 60+% fighting someone else in the weight class. Shane would be the next big option but I doubt he accepts anything lower than 40%.
50% may equal 20+ million for each when everything is counted up. I think this has the potential to do 1.5 million PPV buys...plus the expensive tickets to see the fight and all the rest of the crap they can sell with it.
How the hell do you turn that down?
