dam...a roy discussion i can't partake in...i have no info on billy conn
Unfortunately neither do 99% of the posters who have commented Mak. This was never about putting Roy down, but about how close they should rank historically.
That's Boxingscene, I ain't voting cuz I don't know much about Conn. Except that he gave Louis a very hard time.
In actuality they are quite comparable p4p and that is why I started the thread. Unfortunately its over the heads of many of the goobers here, and they're to lazy to do any research. I appreciate you staying neutral. read up on Conn if you get the chance, he was a great fighter.
clearly a nicey veiled bait thread.
What's next jab, who's better midget wolgast or erik morles?
Video & analysis of that fighter > Old newspaper accounts & analysis of that fighter. Because we all know journalist never embellish or hype up anything.
Question should have been who's a better fighter. Based on benny leonard's video, its clearly Roy.
You know, Im getting a little tired of you calling my threads bait threads. Im sorry if you can't have an intelligent discussion because you lack the knowledge to do so on certain subjects. But stop acting like a little punk because of it, or just don't respond at all.
considering no on knows billy conn, that's proof enough roy jones is a greater all time great
This is the stupidest response yet. You don't know Harry Greb or Sam Langford either, but there is absolutley no doubt that they rank higher p4p than Roy and almost all other fighters in boxing history.
and the fukk @ ''there are very few billy conn fights on tape but there are many articles''
articles dont mean shit
Newspaper articles were the internet of the day. Reporters from the top papers covered all the major fights.
And based on the footage we do have and considering the fighters Conn fought, that says more than the paper title Roy won over Ruiz or his wins over fighters like Glenn Kelly or Richard Hall.
P4p who ranks higher all time, Billy Conn or Roy Jones? Explain your choice and why.
If you look at my top 50 I have a Billy Conn in there and I don't have Roy Jones on that list. So my vote went to Conn. I myself put a lot of emphasis on lineage claims. The lineage tltle means you are the real champ. If you look at Conn resume he beat very good fighters. And, also won the LHW linear title. So at LHW Conn was the REAL champ. While Roy Jones never ever won a linear title. In none of the 4 weightclass that RJJ has fought in has wno a linear title. And, plus there was no SMW or CW division when Conn fought. If there were Conn would probable have more linear titles. Plus Conn gave Louis, who IMO is the 2nd greatest HW off all time and easy in top 10 P4P of all time, all he could handle.
I see a few people voting, but nobody is willing to offer any reasons. Why is that fella's?
That's Boxingscene, I ain't voting cuz I don't know much about Conn. Except that he gave Louis a very hard time.
"Whats the use of being Irish if you can't e stupid".
-Billy Conn after getting ko'd by Joe Louis in their first fight
I think Conn may have gone into fight mode after being hit by a right that seemed to hurt him or at least get his attention....and then having Joe continue his assault. Conn may have started to throw in defense to get Joe to think twice about attacking and/or to bluff that he wasn't actually hurt by it. This was in the 13th round.
I don't know, I wonder if he recovered from that punch as well as the others that would connect moments later... before later in the round getting tagged with an even bigger right that shook him and seemed to lose strength/energy in his legs to move.
I think some fighters naturally fight back when they are hurt. Not necessarily hurt badly, but just hurt enough that their brain tells them to fight back or you are going to die.
If you notice from the start of round 13, which is 6:18 {Time} on this video...Conn is being patient and boxing Joe from a slight distance. He isn't going for the kill after hurting Joe in the previous round. At 7:18 {time} in this video, pay attention to what happens and then finish the rest of the round. The big right that shook him came at 8:04
A little side note with this fight:
There can be little doubt that Joe Louis took Billy Conn lightly. He had defeated all opposition, usually in impressive fashion up to this point. Louis main concern was that he would be criticized for picking on someone who was considered “too small.” Conn, at 174 pounds was the lightest challenger to fight for the heavyweight title since Georges Carpentier who weighed only 172 against Jack Dempsey. The lightest men to win the title were Jim Corbett’s 178 in his knockout over John L. Sullivan and Bob Fitzsimmons official weight of 167 over Corbett, although he was certainly much lighter. Tommy Burns weighed 180 when he took the title from Marvin Hart.
In his autobiography Louis stated that in order to stave off such talk he made the mistake of dehydrating himself prior to the fight so that could weigh in at less than 200 pounds. “I always use to lay off the day before a fight. But the last day I trained, dieted and drank as little water as possible. Chappie (his trainer Jack Blackburn) was mad as hell.” Joe’s sense of fairness left him critically drained as the fight progressed.
Dr. Kathleen Cronin points out that, “Dehydration is a condition that occurs when a person loses more fluids than he or she takes in. Some athletes, such as wrestlers who need to reach a certain weight to compete, dehydrate themselves on purpose to drop weight quickly before a big game or event. This practice usually hurts more than it helps, though. Athletes who do this feel weaker, which affects performance.”

The source/link above talks more about the fight
It's a shame he fought Louis again after the war.
While his performance against Louis was great, its what he did at middleweight that really impresses me.
Jab, can you tell me why one of the names on Conn's resume - Lee Savold, held the British and EBU heavyweight titles?
I actually knew nothing about that. I just ran to boxrec to see what I could find real quick and the only thing I came up with was that savold was recognized by the BBBC as the world heavyweight champion after ko'ing Bruce Woodcock, who I am not particularly familiar with. Nothing on the British or EBU titles though. Can you shed some light?
