I have always admired his skills in the ring. I have no doubt of his place in history. But I have to question the level of his opposition at this weight class. His opponents at welterweight include Sharmba Mitchell, Zab Judah, Carlos Baldomir, Ricky Hatton and Juan Manuel Marquez.
Now, compared to other hall of fame fighters, does he need a fight with a true established welterweight to be considered one of the best of all time at the division, or is he already one of the best even with the opponents he's faced at 147. Your thoughts gentlemen.
I think what PBF has mainly been interested in, in his career to now is winning titles in as many divisions as he can. By any means possible. Whether that is not fighting the best in a weight or picking weak champs in certain weight categories with military precision.
Hes achieved his goals really. But many in history are capable of doing what he does. When mayweathe retires, 5 years down the line another american fighter will come along and win titles in many divisions.
I'm not sure there have been many who have dominated the pedigree of champs that he has faced and the different styles that he has faced I think his versatility is what stands out the most IMO

IMO he needs to fight Mosley and Cotto before people want to call him a great welterweight.
Sharmba Mitchell (wasn't even that good of a 140 pounder)
Zab Judah (good fighter)
Carlos Baldomir (okay fighter but still tough)
Ricky Hatton (a very good 140 pounder)
Juan Manuel Marquez (great 126-135er)
So yeah he hasn't really had a BIG BIG BIG welterweight fight where people actually felt like he could legitimately lose. Either way though Mayweather is still an all time great

No he can't be considered one of the greatest welterweights but he can be considered one of the best boxers ever

Seeing as how only two of those guys are welters, I think not.
I'm a fan of Floyd and even I can tell you that at Welterweight, he hasn't done nearly enough. If he wants to be remembered as one of the best welterweights then he obviously needs to fight some of the top dawgs and I think he will...he just came back from a two year layoff and fought a single fight. Give the guy a chance.
Not in a million years, he has never fought a real Welterweight since he moved up to 147, and by the looks of it he will retire without ever facing a real threat at Welterweight, so no.
I think Floyd is capable of beating the best SFWs, LWs, Jr WWs ever, WW and Jr MW not so much. To answer the TS's question, I don't think so. Who can rise Mayweather to that level, especially in this era? No one.
ugh Clottey, Mosley, Cotto could.
No, he hasn't ever fought a great Welterweight.
If he beats Mosley, Cotto and another top welterweight (Berto, Clottey etc)
then he can be considered a great Welterweight but not one of the greatest.
True he has to at least beat a great welterweight. And there may only be one or two of those. So he must beat Cotto, and Margarito at least i would think.
But then that would only qualify him for being a great welterweight, but the greatest is a bit far for him this late in his career.

If PBf wants to be remembered for being a great WW. He needs to campaign at that weight for the remainder of his career. Beat the Cottos, and SSM first of all, then take on some newcomers and up coming fighters. And before he retires for good he can make himself one last challenge.
Step up to middleweight possibly, for a one off fight, and then call it a day. So maybe 4 or fights left for him i would say to acheive all he can.
