I'm not talking about resume. But whick fighter has the better all-around skills in your eyes. Whitaker was a beast a 135-140. Floyd was a beast at 130-135. So who is it
Floyd is better than Pernell. Pernell, compared to Floyd is sloppy. Floyd has a perfect EFFECTIVE defense. Pernell would need to wait till his opponent stopped throwing to counter. I think Floyd is just better overall but Pernell and Jones are the only ones to come remotely close.
Oh and i've watched every single one of Pernell Whitaker's fights as I did Floyd's.
floyd is a great defensive boxer but sweet pea is a great all around boxer.
floyd barely opened up against a much smaller LW (marquez) at WW when floyd was atleast a MW (155-160 lbs).
just imagine what sweet pea would've did.
Its really close and tough to tell. Floyd is better technically, from defense to offense. However Sweet Pea's southpaw style and natural reflexes allowed him to do things we have rarley seen before, in terms of his ability to slip and dodge punches. It is close because one is more representitive of honed raw ability (Pea) while the other is technical supremacy (Floyd).
I love them both and always enjoy watching them fight.
Sweet Pea. Did it against better opposition. Can't imagine him being forced to do what Floyd did iN Castillo 1 & 2. Sh*t, his performance against a prime Oscar was almost as good as Floyd's against an old one.
I'd have to give the slight edge to Mayweather...but damn, watching sweetpea slip and slide punches like hes dancing at the night club was always a joy to watch. Whitaker is one of my all time faves for sure.
I'm sure I have some degree of bias since sweetpea is a fave of mine and i don't much care for Floyd, but im going to say Pernell as well... I rate evasion higher than blocking defensively since there's been guys who've had success banging away on peoples arms (like Marciano... I'd love to see Floyd go into his shell against a guy like that who's happy to smash him on the arms or shoulder all night). Also I love me some body punching and sweetpea is clearly superior in that department.. and I know Floyd has very good all round skills but he doesn't use them in his fights anymore... Pea would fight inside, outside, in the corner, against the ropes, whatever... made his fights lot more fun to watch, at least to me... he also would take the tough fights, and while Floyd took some risks earlier in his career.... what have you done for me lately
so you base floyd's whole 40 fight career off of recent fights?
of course not.... but look at sweet pea... as he went up in weight he didn't change up styles.... he didn't go from a combination puncher to a potshotter.
didnt roger knock sweet pea down lol
roger had good power and sweet pea was kinda winded for a bit....
if you open up, it gives opportunities to get countered... that doesn't take away from sweet pea's all around game.
of course floyd is accurate, because he only throws punches if he know he can land them.
sweet pea actually throws combinations... 3-5 punch combos and was still elusive while punching.
floyd is all defense w/ an occassional counterpunch.

What is wrong with people, i cant count the number of times on my two hands sweet pea got caught flush..
Zab Judah, DeMarcus Corley... N'dou... Even Marquez all got a good shot in... Literally off the top of my head...
People who say Floyd is better clearly haven't watched pernell's fights, and are idiots, probably just basing ability on one thing... the record, which is unbelmished... Due to floyd's inability to fight proper proper welterweights Don't mean to be harsh but thats the way it is...
I've watched almost every fight of both fighters, im sure many on this forum have. They will say Pernell. Hands down.
didnt roger knock sweet pea down lol
yet he is arguably the most accurate punching fighter in boxing and has been for years---meaning his punches landed vs his punches thrown are better than everybody's elses...the guy had fights where he landed as high as 80% of his punches---just his last fight---he landed almost 60% of his punches and his jabs over marquez's 12% landed punches on him---meaning his accuracy is on point against one of the sharpest punchers in boxing----floyd landed more jabs than juan landed total punches---yeah---he's all defense alright....get a life boy...

Sweet Pea by far. The dude only stood 5 foot 5 but still had the balls to stand up to much bigger and taller guys. And he made it look so easy.
Pea was a very agressive fighter. He didnt pot shot and keep his opponents at a distance quite like Mayweather does. He would be right in their face giving offense while he simultanously evaded all of their attacks. He was simply spectacular.
Pernell also established himself as a premier welterweight fighter. He even proved he could get business done at Jr Middleweight if he wanted.
So far pretty boy has shown a reluctance to face real welterweights. We'll see.
Having watched both guys quite a bit, Whitaker. His reflexes were superior setting up his counters. That video back on the first page sums it up. Whitaker is also better defensively I think. Floyd has more power and a better overall arsenol offensively, but whitaker rarely took flush shots similar to a prime jones.
all around sweet pea is better.
