just like the Super Middleweight tourney we have now. seriously, look at this:
Tim Bradley-Undefeated champ
Nate Campbell-old vet
Juan Diaz-trying to get to the top
Maidana-dark horse with a lot of heart
Amir Khan-fast rising prospect/champ
Devon Alexander-fast rising prospect/champ
Juan Urango-dark horse with a lot of power
Kendall Holt-dark horse with a lot of power
Lamont Peterson-undefeated prospect
Andrei Kotelnik-trying to get back to the top
Paul Malignaggi-trying to get back to the top
Ricky Hatton(he probably wouldnt join though) or Mike Alvarado(undefeated)
Victor Ortiz-prospect trying to make a name for himself again
none of these guys are too huge name that they would just skip the tourney, all of these matchups would be worth seeing...you have some vets, some experienced guys, some guys trying to get back to the top, some undefeated guys, some dark horses...
sounds pretty kickass to me. although it probably should be single elimination type of stuff, with runner up 3rd place matches and stuff.
I dunno about you guys, but I would love it if they got just half of these guys and made a tourney out of it.
Showtime has a bunch of these guys under contract anyway, how about it?
BUMP
why not give the Alphabet champions (Bradley, Alexander, Urango and Khan)
automatic 1st round byes
and have the rest ...
Holt, Peterson, Malignaggi, Maidana, Campbell
have qualifying fights.
well, single elimination tourneys usually work out like this: the most 'favoured' guys are matched up against the most 'unfavoured' guys throughout the tourney. that way the best two guys supposedly get into the final, instead of some mediocre guy that just fought his way there winning over lucky weak competition. they want a real good final, after all.
Im sure people are familiar with how it works.
oh yea, I forgot Vic Ortiz too! how could I? so Ill add him there instead of Hatton
Ortiz vs Urango
Malignaggi vs Diaz II
Devon Alexander vs Kotelnik
Campbell vs Bradley II
Khan vs Maidana
Holt vs Peterson
imo, that would be the best 1st round match ups. I know a lot of people would like to see those controversial rematches, so Id get them out of the way right away.
Itd be pretty kickass, eh?
as far as controversial rematches ... the only one that needs to happen is the bolded .. I don't care how well T-Brad was doing, that fight went 3 rounds for petes sake. IMO the announcer was going a bit crazy to say Campbell was "past it" ... let the fight play out, without headbutts and see what happens
sure Bradley was doing well, but let that fight happen.
regarding Malignaggi, a majority of people feel he pretty clearly beat Diaz. So instead of a rematch, put him in with Urango. complete Style clash, and I feel it would be a very watchable fight.
Also bear in mind that a few of those guys are on Showtime, so if they've still got the cash after the Super Six...
Even ESPN could get involved.
agreed, plenty of Urango's fights have been picked up by ESPN (vs Bailey, Ngoudjo, Rabah, etc)

yea, Bradley, Kolt, Campbell, Alexander have all fought on Showtime recently. add in some of the guys that usually fight on ESPN like Urango and some other guy that could be a dark horse with an unfamiliar name, and that tourney alone is worth watching.
well, not everyone in the tourney has to be a world beater. everyones gonna end up losing in it eventually anyway, its ok to have 1 or 2 loose ends thatll be knocked off early.
look at us, talking like actually gonna happen.
but man, a tourney 140lbs isnt just a dream come true...its actually possible. not a lot of the guys at 140 are too high end to refuse to fight in it, but theres still plenty of talent there.
Lol... I so wish I was a big powerful boxing promoter :D
Also I think Campbell and Holt should fight each other for the opportunity to rematch Bradley. I think Campbell beats Holt and gives Bradley a good fight over 12 rounds
I do think this should happen tourney or no though!

fair enough, but I think that there would be a good chance that Malignaggi would lose to Alexander, making the rematch not happen.
hmm... i think Alexander/Malignaggi would be competitive but i'd be surprised if Paulie lost
in my opinion if he couldn't get past Alexander while Diaz kept winning it would maybe be the right thing to shelf the rematch anyway and have Diaz chalk it up to a tough night that's in the past now
sure, we could take him out and replace him with Alvarado or Witter. not too big a loss, eh?
I just figure Diaz would want to be in on it, knowing his choice of opponents.
Well, Witter is going to 147 so effectively he's already out of this. Plus, he got pretty much trounced by Alexander (of whom I don't think much at this point), and would otherwise be a stylistic nightmare to watch against anyone.
And yeah, I'll actually take back what I said about Diaz - that Malignaggi rematch needs to happen, so the only option would be to have him at 140 (if the Baby Cow could bring it upon himself not to do catchweights again).
I'd let Malignaggi v Diaz II simmer
Malignaggi v Alexander and Diaz v Kotelnik instead
fair enough, but I think that there would be a good chance that Malignaggi would lose to Alexander, making the rematch not happen.
I'm definitely feeling this, Black. But could we maybe take Diaz out of it? I think he looked shit above 135, and there's plenty of competition down there in his natural division for him to still bang with (a rematch with Katsidis wouldn't go amiss IMO).

In which case, might as well add Hatton back in. :p

I think Hatton should move up to 147 incase he wants to come back.
All good and well on paper, especially because of his weight ballooning... but in practice, a nightmare. Hatton's looked terrible in both his outings at 147, and the level of competition in that division would cremate his remains. I reckon he'd still stand a chance against a few names at 140, but he'd get brutally stopped again by someone in the end - even Maidana could possibly do it.
Don't forget Ortiz in this 'tournament'. I still like the kid.
Kendall Holt vs. Bradley rematch. I believe Holt showed that he is more then capable of beating Bradley, needs to be more agressive. Or Bradley vs. Nate to clear things up. Hatton too fat, I think Hatton should move up to 147 incase he wants to come back.
