A couple things
Vitali was a Pro kickboxer and Amateur boxer at the same time i believe.
With Maskaev as mentioned he was injured going into the fight and had either
1) more important Amateur boxing tourney coming up
2)or an important Pro Kickboxing fight in a few days
not sure which but his trainer stopped the fight cuz he didnt want Vitali any more injured than he already was for the upcoming event
Kickboxing was more popular in Europe up until perhaps the mid-90's. That's why guys like Vitali,Povetkin,Vovchanchyn were Kickboxers and why Vitali was more focused on his Kickboxing initially.
And as for the Pele fight there are all kinds of different accounts but for the one guy who asked if Pele would make it up, who knows? You beat a guy who becomes a World champ and Pele was never more than a mediocre boxer as you mentioned so perhaps he did in fact win and the details got embellished so he can have a claim to fame. Without video we won't know.
If video existed, we would have seen it by now...

That is one of the reasons why his stamina is so great and why he has also never been knocked down in the boxing ring. Because kickboxing works his legs and arms more, so it also helps with his stamina workout. How many other heavyweights in history have thrown 800 punches or more? I wonder if Vitali set a new record.
I believe Ike Ibeabuchi holds the record with 975 punches thrown against David Tua.
Alexander Povetkin threw 929 punches against Eddie Chambers.
I have heard from various fairly reliable sources that it was a jumping spinning back kick to the head that ended the fight. The referee stopped the fight on a TKO.
A video supposedly exists of this fight but I've never seen it.

You probably didn't understand what I was saying. He did not focus on his boxing career until after his kickboxing career was over and all of his accomplishments as an amateur boxer were achieved in the mid 1990's when he was already well into his 20's.
I never denied that he started boxing at age 13, in fact I brought it up in an earlier post.
Ahhhhhh. I understand now what you were saying.
Vitali was actually ment to go to the Olympic Games in 96 but tested positive for a banned substance.
I have read that it was a kick in the knee.... in a semi-contact fight... where you are supposed to only "show" the punches.... but again I have no clue what is true and what is not.

So why would he say he started boxing at 13 then? If he kickboxed first then turned to boxing, he wasn't a kickboxing world champion 6 times, before the age of 13, that is impossible.
so it's not making no sense..........

"When 13-year-old Vitali put on a pair of boxing gloves for the very first time, nobody could have imagined that he would become one of the greatest heavyweight champions of all time. Vitali started his career as a successful Kickboxer – he became a six-time Kickboxing-World-Champion, twice as an amateur und four times as a professional. It was not before later when Vitali discovered his passion for boxing and quite fast he was very successful too: As an amateur he became Ukrainian Heavyweight Champion three times, champion of the first World Military Games and winner of the silver medal at the amateur world championships."

They claimed it was a kick to the body, not a head kick.
where's the proof?
I call bullshit, I agree with Vitali, it never happened.
and if it did happen, who gives a flying fukk? Vitali was just a young kid back then and only weighed around 200 lbs when he was kickboxing.

No, he had won amature boxing title at junior level aswell. He has always boxed. But just always mixed kicboxing in aswell.

He won a silver medal in 1995, after he had already discontinued his kickboxing career.
All of his amateur boxing accomplishments were achieved after he had stopped being a kickboxer.
Agreed. He seems a bit more agile but not as strong and likely less durable.

No, Vitali has always devoted a big part of his life to boxing from the age of 13. He was a great boxing amature and in his early 20's he won a silver medal at the world championships.
He had 210 boxing amature fights

He probably would have been too young even if he did flat out boxing from the beginning. I wouldve still loved to see those fights, but this skinny version of him vs the likes of Bowe, Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis...
wouldnt have looked too good, imo.

I read a interview with Pele Reid, in the boxing monthly i belive, and he says there were many witness's who saw Viatli knocked out.
and of course your going to call bullshit, because your head is up vitali's asshole!
Do Vitali has been boxing from the age of 13..........it's not like he was just introduced to boxing in his 20's after Kickboxing. He was also a great amature boxer.well, I figure he was more concentrated on kickboxing in that period of time. All I was saying was that he was raw.
I mean, hes a string bean in this kickboxing match. looks odd, ha.
Imagine if he had been a boxer from the beginning? He may have fought a prime Lewis, Riddick Bowe, Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield and the other 1990's top heavyweights.
Due to his late start he only came into the heavyweight picture in 1999 when he beat Herbie Hide and afterwards lost Chris Byrd which basically ruined his reputation until the Lennox Lewis fight 3 years after.

He only began to focus on boxing instead of kickboxing in the mid 1990's however.

hmm, 3 or 4 years before he turned pro, about 6 years before he won his first WBO title, and 10 years before he fought Lewis.
quite a way back for him.

I think both parties exaggerate what actually happened, much like when Maskaev claimed he KO'd Vitali while Vitali claimed he was only stopped because of he went into the fight with an injury. In truth he probably did go into the fight with an injury but Maskaev was also beating him badly enough for the fight to be stopped by Vitali's corner.
True, Oleg has claimed plenty of times he knocked out Vitali in a amature bout, and I belive the result does go down as a KO loss for Vitali not, a corner stoppage so i belive.
Reid may actually be telling the truth, a Head Kick is most likely more powerfull than a punch and if hit clean with one, 99% of the time any man will be knocked out.
And Vitali was no different.......
