My dad is 60 years old and has been watching boxing all his life. He's watched Ali in his prime, Duran, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard, etc..
He said he thinks Floyd might just be the greatest that ever lived, or at least he has the potential to be. If he cleans out the WW division.. Do you think he can go down as the greatest to ever step into a ring? I think he can...
Thoughts?
your dad sees like all of us, floyd looking great against subpar opposition. theres a reason why ali, duran, hagler, hearns, leonard, etc all have losses on their record and didnt look as good as floyd, they fought all the best competition in their careers. cant say the same for floyd. floyd will never clean out the ww division. he didnt come back for that, he came back for a couple big money fights.
You need to relax, quit making assumptions. Let him do his thing and judge him at the end. Maybe he is back to clean the division, only time will tell.
All those fighters were fighting eachother in their prime. If Mayweather took a back seat and waited for all them to destroy eachother then he would only beat them when they're
vulnerable.
I dont think Leonard would've waited for Tommy to fight hangler and Duran to then step in the ring with him. the fact that he fought those guys a number of times shows alot.

Are you ****ing nuts. Leonard had a lose on his record to Roberto Duran, who unlike people try to portray on here, did not move up and immediately face him. He had 8 fights at 147 before he fought Ray, and to prove he was a solid welter, he moved on up after his loss to ray, and won the 154 and 160 titles, vs younger champions.
You have to look at the quality. Leonard, hearns all would not Have any losses on their records fighting, judah, baldomir, jmm, shot dlh,,etc. what a joke.
Ohh another thing, Mayweather was also at jr welter/welter, according to the rules that leonard and hearns fought at. they had to weight in the day of. Mayweeater weighs in the day before, then replenishes and adds water weight etc. and comes in the right 5-10 pounds heavier. You could not do that back then as addin this type of weight on after a morning weigh in, does too many negative things to a boxer
Think about this...He a cherry picking fight ducker that has skills he can only use against fighters who he knows he can beat. Fighters he knows will give him a problem,he will run and duck.
Think about this... Floyd has more pure boxing talent than any fighter in the world. If he decides to quit cherry picking and fight Pac, Cotto, Mosley, he has a very good chance and kicking every one of their asses. Nobody in that weight class can box with Floyd. He may get knocked out but good luck. I like Floyd against any of them.
its possible if he stops cherry picking.
Thanks Pullcounter! You guys are giving me a lot of things to think about. I would love to see him just f'ng go all out. Balls to the wall. Fight everybody that poses a threat and beat them all undefeated. That would be a site to behold.

You know what, I'm a big Floyd critic but this has actually crossed my mind, not that he could be the greatest ever, cos I think its too late for that, but possibly very high up there.
The key word is potential, and its why i hav Floyd at #4 in my P4P, he just needs to prove how good he really is by taking on the big boys, because his recent record is fairly limited when compared to Pac, Mosley and Cotto. To really step it up he would need to beat Mosley and Cotto, maybe Margarito or Clottey, then move up to L-Mid and beat Williams. I also think to be considered the best he needs to add more offence to his game, he lacks a killer instinct and dosnt really follow up on his sharp shooting. Lets be honest, Marquez shouldnt have lasted 6rounds last saturday. I think this would require a big change in attitude though, and I doubt he will, but Mosley has to be his next fight..
Very respectable. Glad to see a Floyd critic who actually sees past personal feelings towards the guy, and can see the potential he possesses. Most Floyd critics will be quick to criticize everything he does without seeing what actually may be one of the top 5 ATG's. Thank you for your opinion. Again, very respectable.

but then again due to somewhat of a lack of big names at 154 he might have to fight at middleweight. just ask pwill when he hung around at 154 for really just one fight (he was 157 vs andy kolle). he might even have to beat pwill to be goat, i mean i know im being tough but you are talking about the g.o.a.t title.
nobody in the mainstream knows who the hell pwilly is, or all boxers out there at 154 for that matter so it aint gonna help. theres enough names in the ww division like mosley, cotto, margarito and pac. if he fought them four he would be top 5 atg easy.

Yeah you gotta be tough on this subject.. I mean, what does he hafta do? If he gets motivated I think he can be unbeatable.. He was a small WW but he's got bigger and is a natural WW. The possibilites are endless.

if he cleans out the welterweight division and maybe fights champion or two at junior middleweight, i dont see why not. Because if he cleans out the welterweight division he will be in the talks of being one of the greatest boxers if not the greatest but if he beats some champions at junior middleweight it will be almost undisputable. I mean why do you think its so hard for mosley to find a fight at ww. Only big name opponents out there are mayweather, cotto, mosley and pacquiao (catch-weight). If floyd beats a champion at JM its obviously a much bigger dude. And it's all possible.

I'm not talking about that. I'm saying if Floyd got motivated, and decided he wanted to prove something. If he cleaned out the competition in the WW division, would he be at the top of the ATG list?

No, because the fights that could've really tested him are gone. PAC maybe, but, this new Floyd is alot stronger now with the same technical brilliance and speed, I don't know, we'll have to wait and see how PAC deals with Cotto's power and strength.
The only serious threat to Floyd is P-Will, but I honestly don't see how that guy can come back down to 147lbs. And I don't think Floyd would even give it a second thought, he would never fight that 84 inch freak.
PWill is not a natural WW. I don't think he'll be making 147 anymore. I do think if Floyd beat Pac, and Mosley there would not be any doubt about who the greatest boxer of this generation is. How does he stack up against the ATG's?
