Roy Jones Jr was highly athletic in his prime and did things I never seen in the ring and didn't get the love and the fame that he should have.
Pernell Whitaker also was another fighter who didn't get the fame he deserved for all the marvelous things he accomplished.
SRL is the only non HW fighter to gain superstardom in my lifetime.
Despite black fighters being the best or among the best in the sport since the damn near conception of the sport.....for many years. Why hasn't a black non HW fighter got true Superstardom?
Just maybe Floyd ain't that crazy!!!!!
And if i am wrong....please correct me and name the black fighter who was the best in sport and had the Superstardom and carried the sport.
I would say Joe Calzaghe considering he is undefeated and his previous victory over Roy Jones Jr and Bhop , which arguebly catapulted his status to him appearing on Dancing With The Stars .
dude, be realistic....who has he cherrypicked. 130 and 135 fought the best. 140, the best didn't want it. moved to 147 fought the best. Cotto, Mosley wasn't at 147 when he moved there. Zab was the guy at 147 and he beat Zab and his conqueror. Beat Oscar at 154 and then whooped on hatton at 147. that is not cherrypicking!!!
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLL!
You're flawless?
this isn't about black and white.
fact is in the last 20 to 30 yrs. black fighters have been the best or amongst the best in the sport and only HW black fighters have reached superstardom.
So I'm saying Floyd has a point...he has evidence/history to suggest that black non HW fighters that have been great have not gotten their just due.
The HW is always the blue riband event in boxing and so the champion crosses into the mainstream, non athletic fans can usually tell you who the 100m olympic champion or WR record holder but not neccessarily the 400m champion.
SRR, SRL, RJJ I would say have been as popular as DLH who has marketed himself very well.
Floyd isn't popular or gets the respect he is due because he isn't terribly argreeable nothing to do with his colour IMO.
I'm English but looking on I would hope that having an black president would surely show that America isn't racist apart from a few isolated bigots.
It's different with Floyd, he says how he is the greatest but he doesn't back it up by facing his biggest challenges in the ring. Duran fought everyone, floyd avoids his biggest challenges yet acts like he is taking on world beaters. Look at the other big trash talkers- they get in the ring and fight (Toney, Ali, etc) Floyd has been ducking and cherrypicking for 7 years now and he wants props? That's not how you get um. shit, at least Hatton mans up and fights the best, he came up to see Floyd at floyd's weight. He gets waaaaaaaaay more props for being man enough to try Floyd than floyd gets for accepting that fight. Same thing with JMM. These guys are fighting floyd in his prime, not after he's been reduced to a shell of his former self, like when Floyd stepped up to face Oscar, but Floyd still wants props for that.

Duran talked mad ish and Oscar has to on the low. hatton is another that talked crazy. i don't see the hate for them.
If man can talk and then back it up...how u gon be mad at that.

So if Floyd won the gold, he would have had superstar status his whole career? u might have a point, but how lame is that. in any other sport, the best teams get the recognition. Only in boxing does the best not get rewarded, properly. And it seems as of lately the best fighters in the lower divison have been black and not recognized.
i want to see a white champ come on along who is nice and got skills and dominates world champions his whole career just to see a comparison. i mean even pacquiao just now getting his just due at the tail end of his career. i just feel like we don't get to celebrate our best fighters until their almost done and that is a shame.
I know what you're saying, but from what I can see thats what does it. True boxing fans LOVE the real boxers. My favourite boxers are Pacquiao, Marquez, Cotto, Mayweather, anyone with skill and real boxing credibility. But fact is, the real boxing fans aren't the people who pump money into the sport. It's the casual fans who don't know a thing. Oscars lady fans in the early late 90s and early 2000 era were one of the reasons he had so much hype, most of Oscars fans weren't even boxing fans, you get me? Casual fans, who don't watch boxing will NOT be attracted by people like Floyd and Pernell Whitaker. They'll be charmed by Oscar, Ray Leonard and guys like this. Guys who have a story, and winning olympic gold as a youngster is a big way to get it going. It's why Oscar is called the Golden Boy after all.

Have you figured out how short-sighted this question is yet?

Gerald McClellan most definatelty did.
Edit - Sorry I thought it said Supertardom not Superstardom.
The thing is, out of all the boxers who are non heavyweights, there tends to only be one Mega Star. It was Sugar Ray Leonard and after him it was Oscar? Notice Leonard and Oscar followed similar patterns....won Olympic Gold, had flash boxing skills, both well spoken, both treat the media and everyone with respect. Its the same in UK, our most popular boxer is Amir Khan, he isn't white? He won olympic silver as our ONLY fighter in the Olympics and was only 17, he captured our hearts and fought for the UK and won a medal. It's all about the story that a fighter has. Floyd doesn't quite have a story and continuously brags and brags about his skills. Very little modesty and respect to others. Thats why he isn't big like Oscar. And infact now that Oscar is retired, you could argue Floyd is the biggest PPV star, so don't get why he's making noise.

Floyd would be liked if he did'nt have such a big mouth. All the fighters from the past that were loved by all did'nt have big mouths.
Duran talked mad ish and Oscar has to on the low. hatton is another that talked crazy. i don't see the hate for them.

So! Oscars mexican not white. What is your point? People like Oscar who the fvck cares?

taylor
whittaker
lockridge
nelson
hearns
hagler
robinson
gavilan
chocolate
langford
hagler
pbf
leonard
gans
I want speak on those fighters before my time. But Whitaker, Nelson, Hearns, Hagler were not superstars. They didn't transcend the sport...they were known by boxing fans only.
I just want to know who reached superstar status, any race, that wasn't a HW besides Oscar. And recently.
Julio Cesar Chavez, Roberto Duran, but none has done it like Oscar. This is true.
The more important point is that our best fighters of the sport just don't get their proper recognition. Oscar was great, but Whitaker, Jones Jr, Hopkins, and Floyd were greater and they din't get their just due.
Therefore, Floyd gotta point!
It's not just boxing he is talking about in other sports. What about vick, bron, kobe, griffey just to name a few. Floyd is a ignorant kid, you can't take the hood out of floyd and he still thinks like that little ghetto kid that think it's never his fault but someone elses.
We talking boxing, not other sports.
ok what non HW especially recently has reached superstardom besides maybe Oscar.
Jones Jr, Hopkins, Whitaker.
They might not be superstars, but they are the biggest boxers in the sport when they were fighting right?
What white guy or other type was just as big?
There were no white guys on that level because they weren't as good as them at that time in the non HW divisions.
But not trying to make it black and white issue. It is simply a fact that despite black fighters being the best in the sport, they don't gain the proper recognition that they should.
Alot of people saying Floyd is crazy, but he gotta point. Hatton was top of the P4p list simply by beating kostya Tzysu. Who else did he beat to be considered in the top 5 of P4p list. joe Calzaghe is nice, he got skills, but who did he beat previously before Hopkins and roy to be at the atop of that list. Floyd hase been dominating world class champions for over 10 yrs and him and hattton and calzaghe were mentioned as peers in their greatness. that's crazy.
if all it takes is for Hatton to beat 1 good fighter to be atop the best in the sport, then floyd should have been a god-like figure amongst men.
Hearns, Hagler, Leonard, Robinson was very famous as the P4P number 1 had an entourage and a pick cadillac etc. a celebrity at the time
But he was saying that no black non hws
and I asked for some nonblack other weights.
I mentioned all those fighters too.
The TS just sounds silly.
