Joe Calzaghe was/is extremely lucky to have stayed undefeated. Think about it................ all the things that go wrong in a fight for you from broken jaw, ribs, nose to disputed knockdowns to bad decision's to having the fight stopped on cuts whether accidental or not.
In a way it can be seen as a notch for Calzaghe in that he managed to avoid all those things by Boxing so well to avoid them or it could just be seen as extremely lucky and good at the same time, or just plain lucky period.
Id have to give him credit and say its extremely lucky and being good at the same time.

Fighting most of his career in his home soil all he had to avoid was to be knocked the F out really. Then coming over to fight a couple 40 year olds is hardly risky. Calzaghe really doesn't rank very high in the risk (or otherwise) department.
lucky he doesn't step in the ring with a opponent who is capable of beating him.
It's not his fault that he's so much better than everyone at or near his weight class. Floyd's resume and skills are at least 2X better than Joe's.
I have them rated equal in skills, they don't fight exactly the same but they do throw punches from great angles which requires skills and great timing. And people give me red k on here for saying anything bad about Chavez... But I don't think Chavez was that good, I believe he fought much smaller guys than himself and was embarrassed at times in the fight with Whitaker.
Whitaker was far more skilled than Calzaghe imo.
Whitaker also made Haugen, Azumah Nelson, Roger Mayweather Vasquez, Jose Luis Ramirez look pedestrian.
Calzaghe put on a couple of white washes but Whitaker did it on a regular basis.
I can give you at least 3,4 flawless performances to watch of Whitaker where you jaw will be on the floor at the skill level he had.
Calzaghe never beat no Azumah Nelson, JCC.
Chavez beat the living day lights out of good fighters like Camacho, Haugen, Mayweather,, Rosario so i dont know how you call him overrated, if you have had over 80/90+ fights you might stop slipping a bit towards the end, no shame in getting dominated by Whitaker he did it to many good fighters.
Whoever says luck did not play a part is not being realistic. Do you think Pernell Whitaker deserved the decision he got against JLR ? now i know you aint going to tell me Whitaker is not as talented as Calzaghe.
Anything can happen in a fight and no one, i repeat no one is good enough to calculate for every eventuality no matter how good they are/were.
I think Calzaghe's skill was a big factor but to deny he has also had a bit of lucky on his side is not realistic imo. I dont think he has ever been cut in his career has he ? no one can be that calculated as to avoid stuff like that, that kind of thing has happened to better fighters than Calzgahe so dont tell me its because Joe is that great.
bullshit, calzaghe sucks and the only reason you suppor him is because you are a welshman. stupid prick.
says the calzaghe fan. calzaghe fught old roy jones and stole the fight from b- hop. stupid welshman.
if anyone is stupid it appears to be you boy.
I like Joe Calzaghe becuase i found his fights entertaining. I liked his high stamina, great hand speed and good chin. His technical abilities were also good.
Now chill out kiddo. stop acting the hard man.
That is stupid. How can you be lucky to stay undefeated? This isn't gambling. This is boxing. A full contact sport. Sure, you could say he was lucky he wasn't KO'd with one good punch. But then that must mean Roy Jones in his prime was lucky, Ali in his prime was lucky and so on.

Calzaghe fought the best competition that was avaliable. He was not lucky he was just a great fighter. He had bad hands ever since the Sakio Bika fight and his power diminished quite a lot over the years so he was more often than not boxing his way to decisions (decisive decisions though).
He wanted to fight Bernard back in the day but he didn't want it. Also, many say why didn't he fight Dawson after Roy. Well i didn't see Chad Dawson chasing the fight much either. Same story with Roy Jones Jr. back in the day. Not saying he ducked him but he didn't exactly express his desire to fight Calzaghe.
Calzaghe gets a raw deal for not fighting these guys in their prime or whatever, but the fact is they didn't want Calzaghe either so i think you have to put the blame on both parties not just Calzaghe.
I'm not sure it was luck. He worked out a very successful way of winning fights - even with china hands. Just look at Calzahe's face, not even a hint of a blemish from over 40 fights, he was a very smart guy in the ring.
I remember before Lacy watching him fight one handed for half a fight after breaking his hand early on, still won convincingly!

Luck is a factor. That's why better sports teams lose to inferior teams once in awhile.
i see what your saying but an inferior team can beat a better team without luck, e.g inferior team are liverpool(scum) came to old trafford and beat the superior team man utd 4-1. it wasnt luck, it was just the scouse scum were better on the day.
Calzaghe's hand problems has been largely over exaggerated IMO.
Calzaghe's hand problems are no different to Malignaggi's (who broke his hands really bad when he was younger).
The difference is nobody wants to give Malignaggi any credit for having mashed up hands yet everyone wants to give Calzaghe credit for them.
I love Calzaghe and Malignaggi though.
