Tuscaloosa heavyweight boxer Deontay Wilder had surgery on his right hand Friday in Birmingham to repair two bones he broke during a fight earlier this month.
Dr. Joseph Sherrill performed the one-hour surgery Friday afternoon with no complications.
Wilder is expected to be sidelined two months, although he will still train as usual with the exception of using only his left hand.
He will go through physical therapy to regain full strength and motion of his right hand.
“He will use this as a great opportunity to work on the left hand,” Wilder’s co-trainer Jay Deas said.
“We expect him to take a couple of weeks off to recover from the surgery and then, after that, he’ll be itching to get back in the gym.”
I read a previous interview in which he says he broke it on the top of the guy's head with the last punch of the fight.
He also said he's looking forward to working on his left hand and on perfecting his jab during the healing time.
This could actually be good for him that way, forcing him to improve his left hand, it needs work.
Also, the broken bones were his pinky and ring fingers, and he said in the interview that he'd broken the hand in basketball before, and he learned to dunk with his left.
That's fast. Wouldn't expect him to break his hand blowing out guys like he has been doing.
