Lopez to fight Mtagwa on Oct. 10Comment Email Print Share Associated Press
NEW YORK -- Unbeaten junior featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez has signed a contract extension with promoter Top Rank, and will defend his title against veteran Rogers Mtagwa this fall.
Top Rank president Todd duBoef announced the deal Wednesday, putting Lopez (26-0, 24 KOs) in the main event of the "Latin Fury" card Oct. 10 at Madison Square Garden. He'll be headlining in the theater of the arena where countryman Miguel Cotto built his reputation.
"There is a great lineage of Puerto Rico superstars -- Wilfredo Gomez, Tito Trinidad and Miguel Cotto," duBoef said. "It' a pleasure that Juanma and Top Rank will work together to get him to become one of the greatest of all-time on the island."
Lopez certainly is off to a fast start.
He drilled Daniel Ponce de Leon in the first round to capture the WBO title at Atlantic City's Boardwalk Hall in June 2008, and hasn't come close to losing it even against some stiff opposition. Following first-round knockouts of Cesar Figueroa and Sergio Manuel Medina, Lopez forced bantamweight champ Gerry Penalosa to quit before the 10th round.
Then in June, Lopez defended his belt again in a ninth-round stoppage of Olivier Lontchi at Boardwalk Hall, making him 5-0 with five knockouts in title bouts.
"Juanma has had a meteoric rise in his first five years," duBoef said. "We believe Juanma's future is very bright."
Mtagwa (26-12, 18 KOs) is considered a steppingstone fight for Lopez, with the idea to pit him against WBA featherweight champion Yuriorkis Gamboa next year.
Gamboa (15-0, 13 KOs), considered one of the top prospects to come out of Cuba, fights Whyber Garcia (22-6, 15 KOs) on the same card at Madison Square Garden.
Also scheduled to fight are up-and-coming heavyweights Odlanier Solis and Kevin Johnson, and unbeaten junior middleweight Vanes Martiroysan.
I GUESS HE REALLY IS GOING THROUGH WITH THIS FIGHT.WTF!!!!!MTAGWA IS A WARRIOR BUT WHO THE FUK WANTS TO SEE HIM TAKE A BEATING

when in the hell did juanma pay his dues to deserve paydays. Or did i miss something.
You are the type of fan that buys into this b.s. I could give a damn about how much money a fighter makes, because i don't get a penny of it. What i want is to see the best take on the best. That is what we pay for. True champions are made in the ring, not by promotion
great post friendo

he wont fight weak bums, Rogers isn't a weak bum he just isn't Celestino. thing is YOU don't want to see Juan Ma fight Rogers but that doesn't mean it can't be a good fight. thing is you have to understand why take a loss in pay? it don't make sense and he is going to take the most rewarding route. he just beat Penalosa and De Leon, he's still thinking about big fights but this is a fight where he just gotta pay dues, Rogers wont just fall like so many of you think, he isn't just going to allow himself to be battered defenselessly he's going to bang back and that could make for a good show. you guys are sleeping but it may be time to wake up real quick, if you're the champion in such a brutal sport and paid your dues would you take LESS money AFTER pay cuts against a bigger threat or would you take more money against a lesser threat to then set up a fight with a bigger threat than Caba down the line. it's called being smart man ya dig Juan Ma is a warrior, stick by him now because you don't want to be eating words later..
ah the old tread water fighting bums until the real threat goes away routine.
the gamboa fight probably wont happen till1 1/2 to 2 years.so is he suppose to fight 3 more bums then gamboa?thats weak

juan ma is a warrior. Didn't you hear his plans? He plans to fight gamboa who is twice the fight that caballero is. Gain some sense y'all, why would he take such a huge cut in pay for a higer risk in caba when he could take the rogers fight for equal or better money and then take out gamboa to really establish himself? You need to see shit from his perspective before you can judge
