I had posted something earlier this year about Pavlik and it did not get much response. I am in my deepest of heart trying to figure out something good to say about him and keep in mind the great heart he showed in the first Taylor fight. It seems so long ago that he was on wobbly legs and trying to hold on for dear heart. Went back to his corner and gave Steve Smoger a wink and a smile mouthing the words I am okay. The fighter everyone wanted to see go head to head with Taylor for the Undisputed Middle Wieght Crown. The winner of the title eliminator bout over the dangerous Pantera Edison Miranda. Wow that seems so long ago. We haven't had much to cheer about since 2007 early 2008. Pavlik has only defneded his titles 2 times since winning them You cannot count the 2nd fight with Taylor as it was at a catch weight and not for the Middle Weight titles. His two title matches have been against
Gary Lockett
Marco Antonio Rubio
Since 2007 he has one loss toHopkins no real shame in that Hopkins can make a wet dream look bad. his style give most fighter nightmares just watching from ring side or on TV. But it is the lack of what seems to be dedication to giving the fans some action packed fights that gets me upset with Pavlik. In the Hopkins fight I heard something I will never forget come out of Pavlik's corner and no it was not Jack Lowe saying to touch his nuts fellas. it was his cut man tellign him your only losing the fight you still have the titles. It made me realzie something about the sport I love and apperciate so much. Whether or not I am ignorant or choose to be remains to be seen but for the first time I really thought to myself "hey this guy is in it just for the money"
While I unlike most did not think Kelly would knock out Hopkins I also did not think he was as flawed a fighter as Hopkins proved him to be in that match up.
2009 gets even worse for Pavlik and his team first with a tune up match that for me seemed like the fighter across the ring was not even trying. Tadem PPV event put on by TOP RANK gave us PAVLIK and Cotto from two different locations. Niether fight was much to watch but seeing both fighters coming off losses Pavlik to Hopkins and Cotto to Margarito was worht paying for at least for me. But what since for Kelly? Nothing but disappointments and set backs. Questions after his loss raised by his father and manager that he night retire or refrain from fighting? It seems like he is shying away from tough fights or someone is encouraging him to do so.
The recent claims of injury to his hands or infection have caused the last two fights to be called off and now seems like the biggest fight for him sicne winning the titles or biggest title deffense is now being called off too. Talks of drinking problems bar fights and issues with his promotional company have given this hard luck kid from Youngstown tremnedous set backs in his carrer and big hits to his image. I don't know about the rest of you out there but not only is his stock dropping in my eyes but his reputation as a person as well. He was among one of my favorite fighters out there on his way up and through out the end of 2008 early 2009 but his recent set backs and personal issues have me beginning to question my judgement and wheterh or not I really care to see or pay for him to fight.....Lefty
You don't think Williams showed heart against Margarito or Martinez?
I posted that before Williams fought Martinez...After the Martinez fight I thnk Williams has a lot of heart.....Lefty
Tell you the truth I think Pavlik will drop Williams. Whether or not he puts him away will remain to be seen. i do no tknow what kind of heart Williams has. Everyone looks unstoppable when they are knocking people out and winning fights. It is until they get tested that their true personality shows. See how much they really want it and how far they are willing to go. Pavlik showed lots of heart in his fights with Miranda and Taylor. Especially in round 2 of the first bout with JT. It is just the decision making his trainer and the fact he has not fought anybody worth mentioning or relivant in over 2 years....Hopkins to me was a bout strictly for the $$$ no relivance there to me and the fact it was just a fight not a match for the titles....Lefty

One of the topics on teh show tonight...Lefty
We talked about this last night on my show. We agreed Pavlik has dnoe nothing with a very prestigeous title Undisputed MW Champion. He has only had three title defenses Lockett, Rubio and Espino.....To me he has to make that fight with Williams in order to regain the buzz that was surrounding him prior to the past 18 months or so....Lefty
I think he is best served fghting a Sturm. If I were Kelly Pavlik and his owners for right now I would steer clear of Williams...Let Williams go for a rematch with Martinez and win you tune up fight. Then maybe get in there with a nmae but not such a hard fight like the Mora fight they were going to give him or maybe an Angulo "El Perro" type fighter....I would steer clear of both martinez and Williams until he gets very serious about his profession again...lefty

There is clearly something wrong with Pavlik, I don't know what but I believe the people close to him know there is something wrong and are doing their best to hide whatever those problems are.
I think losing to Hopkins may have been a big blow to his self esteem, and perhaps things began to spiral downwards ever since, or maybe he began dealing with some personal demons even before hopkins, but the loss just made everything that much worse.
Regardless of the reasons, he needs his confidence back. He needs a big win. His next fight isn't going to do anything for him, it's basically a tune up. He needs a big name, someone to test him and make him dig deep like Taylor did, and probably the only person to provide that to him at the moment is paul williams. If he loses that fight, I wouldn't expect to see pavlik champion ever again.
People say pavlik wasn't that good. I disagree, because while his style may be simple he had tremendous heart & desire which is what makes champions. That fire is currently M.I.A. and it has been for a while. Against hopkins he quit after the 4th or 5th round, you could see it in his eyes and body language. He didn't want to dig deep, he accepted defeat during the fight and that's something you never want to see in a fighter.

he aint gonna fight Williams he is fighting a no name and now talks of Bute....Lefty
We spoke about him last night on the GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT SHOW. You should listen in on the recorded version and check it out....
Lefty
And yet if he KO's Williams 2009 becomes a solid year for him.
I doubt he does though.

Pavlik still is a disappointment. He's following in the foot steps of Jermaine Taylor and fighting smaller guys. I view Williams as a live threat to him, but it's still the idea that Williams is considered a smaller guy. After seeing what Abraham did to Taylor this weekend, my opinion of Pavlik has went way down. Yeah, Abraham might have gotten the left over version of him. But do people forget that Pavlik went life and death with Taylor in the rematch?
And I share the same opinion of the thread starter. My opinion of Pavlik has been low ever since he lost to Bernard. Now losing to a guy like Hopkins is nothing to be ashamed of, but he didn't do anything to show that he was a throw back warrior that takes on all comers until he accepted the challenge of Paul Williams. He thought Hopkins was an easy mark after he lost to Calzaghe, and it back fired on Pavlik.
The guy was injured and postponed the fight but is ultimately taking on Paul Williams, a guy no one allegedly wants to fight. NSB would be giving him more sh*t had he actually fought Mora. Pavlik has a lot of haters.
I aint giving him shite for fighting Williams I am giving him shite for his lack of fighting in the year after his loss to B Hop but who doesnt get a little mixed up after getting schooled by B Hop but all the hoopla surrouding him with his drinking problems and bar fights his lack discipine and his douche bag trainer Jack Lowe.....lefty

Yea, there's a lot of skills and intelligence in 1-1-2....1-1-2....1-1-2...
The guy is an alcoholic who lost all his heart for boxing after one loss. Pavlik is gonna get fukkin embarassed and beaten to a pulp by Williams.
Pavlik went from Mr. Middle America Poster Boy into a Beer Guzzlin, Whiskey Swiggen, Nad uppercutting, Fan + Policeman Punching Tractor Driver.
I like him more now. :D
It is like he is from the Old West. He is the new Clint Eastwood!LOL
i ust dont think he is very good at all. id put money on it that mayweather would beat him at 160. but obviously mayweather doesnt have the balls to fight someone bigger.
To me he is the biggest disappointment in the game right now. The lack of fights and issues with his hands or lack of issues with his hands. It is what it is but to me he is defintely been nothing but a disappoinment....Lefty
So now that Kelly is fighting Williams we finally have something to look forward to from Pavlik. The fight scheduled for December 5th unless we here other wise from Pavlik's camp. WHo knows a bar fight staff infection he is thinking about retirement. Could be anything from him these days. he has not done much fighting as of late. What has he had two title matches in the last 2 1/2 years?.....Lefty
Yes, Pavlik since he won the title, has been incredibly disappointing.
To me he is the biggest disappointment in the game right now. The lack of fights and issues with his hands or lack of issues with his hands. It is what it is but to me he is defintely been nothing but a disappoinment....Lefty
I think there's two sides to every fighter's reputation; what the rabid boxing fan thinks and what the casual, ESPN ticker-watcher sports fan thinks.
I'm at the point where, having had my doubts about Kelly to begin with, I think he needs to get a little more active- but I can't really blame him for injuries I suppose. I think he's thrown around fighting quite a few chumps though, like Mora, that make me wonder what his deal is- though the Williams fight would be a good one.
My friend, a casual fan, though has been wondering recently, "What's up with Kelly Pavlik? It seems like he was fighting a lot more, and looking good, before that Hopkins ass whooping he took..."
Regardless of reasons or facts - he's right. It DOES look like post-Hopkins Pavlik might really be a ghost. Does he still believe in himself the same way? Does he have the same desire now that he's rich and recognized? Or was he the type of guy that can only fight being doubted, with his back against the wall, and now that he's made the money and gotten the crown at 160, he's going to lose a bit of his luster?
I don't know.
