why are white americans so poor at boxing...???

I don't buy the poverty theory because there's more poor white people than black and Latinos combined in America according to the government census. mECHsLAVE explained the reasons best. I know this is a troll thread, but it does get brought up from time to time. The simple answer is the most gifted white athletes are going to play football, baseball, tennis, etc. Bc that's what's more readily available to them. Most boxing gyms in the states are in the inner city, historically, and in more ethnic/urban areas. That's the simple reason. I also don't buy the theory that the great black boxers are now playing in the NBA or NFL because both of those leagues have been majority black since the early 1970's and there were still plenty of great black HW fighters in America up until the Klitschko's came along. I just think that black and white Americans have less interest in boxing nowadays then they used to so of course there will be less of them having success in boxing. I also think that the fall of the Soviet Union and the popularity of boxing in Europe in general has created a much larger pool of talent for boxing. Saying that all the great Americans boxers are playing in the NBA or NFL is a lame cop out. Most of the current top European fighter would've been successful in any era.

they used to be masters, white people invented sports to give them excitement.. in greece they invented gladiators only slaves used to fight in that sports. Gladiators were Romans. Greeks had the olympics and the participants were not slaves but instead athletes. Not all Gladiators were slaves either, many were poor people struggling to move up in the world with the fame and fortune.

Hell, MLB has tons of scouts just combing the Domincan Republic for prospects.....it's like a gold mine. Poet MLB has baseball academies in some Latin American countries, baseball is bigger than anything else.

It's really what you grow up around isn't it? Poor inner-city kids grow up around basketball, but if you go down to the Dominican Republic poor kids all play baseball. Different locations, different cultures. Poet Yeah that true especially in some of the poorer countries. They dont have the facilities to participate in some of the sports like football and basketball golf etc. But when I grew up I my parents had me in sports year round. I was on swim team for 6 years and never good at it lol. Its realy interesting though that some of the countries in europe have great athlethes but they dont have football baseball in thier culture. Ive met some guys at school that would have been great athose sports but they hardly know anything about them.

Why do you think they are poor at it? As of now minorities dominate boxing. Saying that whites are "poor" at it would be one way of describing the small percentage of white boxer along with the small number of elite white boxers as of now.Its a bad choice of words but it does accurately describe thier state in boxing. Just like minorites have a poor showing in sports like swimming and golf.

Sure. Whites make up between 60 and 70 percent of the population. The rest is divided up amongst a number of minority. Sheer numbers. Poet Correct. I say that because sometimes people get the preception that the only people that are poor are minorities and that all white people are middle class or better. But I see your not one of those people.

Boxing in the US has always been an outlet for those in poor urban centers which today is predominantly composed of Blacks and Latinos. Back in the day when the Italians, Irish, and Jews were in a similar situation they thrived in boxing as well. We have a winner. This is also why Jews Dominated Basketball for a long time. Or why so many old school boxers have Italian Irish or Polish last names. Poorer people are more likely to look for an escape through sports. Why take the risks of boxing if I can make money as a banker? Much less risk in Banking than Pro Boxing.

Lets take britain...yes we have less ethnic minorities, but we still have a high enough percentage. plus there are more white people in america than britian. I wouldn't say that they are poor at boxing, more like there is a much lesser percentage of Caucasians participating in boxing these days. When Mr. and Mrs. Smith's little boy Johnnie is growing up, they are not having aspirations of him becoming a boxer. I think it all comes to percentages. That is also why you see a higher percentage of Caucasian American men in baseball than you do African American males. You don't see the brothas' playing baseball that much. Well, not any more at least. This is also the reason the heavyweight division is in it's current state. The Heavyweight boxer that you would have seen in the 1960s and 1970s is now playing middle linebacker somewhere in the NFL.

Because they are really good at other sports that you get paid alot more for, you can do it alot longer and it dosent involve getting you face punched in...

My view is on the whole white people in america are wealthy, whearas black people and latinos are unfortunately in the poorer districts. Which could mean there only means of getting out is boxing.... In england there are numerous of poor white estates. My home city of nottingham has terrible white estates so hence more boxing gyms... Which leads me to te question, why is ufc mainly white americans, surely if they can do that sport, they could hold there own in boxing??? Most of the MMA practitioners around here are suburban kids who wrestled in HS. Its a completely different enviroment in a boxing gym and an MMA gym.
