I have been a huge fan of boxing for years now..I always wanted to be a boxer myself.I waited to long in life to get started.I live and breath boxing 24/7.I'm on here every night as much as possible,I'm constantly watching my fight collection... but anyways
Heres my question:
My son always says he wants to box..He's 14 years old around 100 lbs and has a nice long reach..He has alot of rhythm with dancing and all..he can move very well..I have been wanting to get him to try boxing for a while and he seems very interested.I personnally have alot of boxing knowledge( not to gloat)but I know alot about boxing and have watched it for a long time..
I wanna train him myself and promote him but heres the problem...
There is nowhere around where I live to do any kind of boxing..We live in a small rural town in ky and boxing is a dead sport around here...everyone is into that mma stuff though but anyways...looking for some tips?? I would like to train him myself for around a year or so and get him into amateur boxing then go from there...where do I start ?? honestly looking for opinions and answers..thanks in advance ..I know he would probably need a real trainer but I'd like to try it myself..Thanks guys
The thing for me is...and I mean no disrespect but...watching boxing and training someone to do it are two VERY different things...training a boxer involves A LOT... a tremendous amount that, honestly, must be gained by being in a gym, being around fighters, watching sparring endlessly, working corners, under pressure, etc. ..I would try bringing him to a gym somewhere...because the reality is that you as a trainer at this point in the game will only have your own eyes to watch his progress...and if he is making mistakes you will have no idea of it because you will be the one teaching them to him...
go out and buy boxing eqiument etc pads, bags, gloves. tell your son he has to be dedicated and live eat and sleep boxing. make sure you and him watch and study fight tapes together, you will learn alot watching fellow atg's.
and just give your 110% into training him! thats what jack mosely use to do with shane! and he will get far, and if he has talent it will show no matter what!
good luck man!

this is easy bro. buy boxing equipments yourself then train your son. if you have a garage or a decent space you can buy a ringside trainer and that equipment will already give you space for a heavy bag and speedball. the double end bag and miits will be easy. if you cant build a ring within your free space you can use some matts
lol just like my dad...
he freakin loves the sport.... he got me into it... took me to a gym and BAM started compitingggggg.... .and boyyy my dad gets nervoussss still do this day... even when i spar he gets nervous... lol.... just b ready for watever comes... just like my pops says...
'boxing is like a rollercoaster, u aint always gonna b on top'
i guess u can train him... watch some tapes on how to train... i mean u got knowledge on the sport all u need to learn is how to motivate ur son... and learn how to b a coach!!
:)
go 4 it man!!!!!!!!!
Where in Kentucky are you located? I live in the Cincinnati area, and when I was going to a boxing gym, the one I found that wasn't in too bad of an area was in Covington Kentucky. The place was called Shamrock Boxing. It was a hole in the wall, but they didn't charge anything to go there, they just asked for donations. Anyway, even if you wanted to train him yourself, you could atleast network with some of the people running this gym, and maybe find sparring partners when the time arrives.
man I appreciate it but covington is around 6 hours from where I live..
Yeah, just put him in a sport where he has the potential to take heavy damage to the head and become a slurring idiot in his adult life. Good thinking. College is overrated.

If you really can't find a gym, I'd look at some training videos if I were you and start from there. You THINK you know boxing, but unless you've done it and have been trained before, you won't know how to teach him properly. You could end up (though no fault of your own) teaching him some bad habits that will be hard to break later on.
Ringside makes pretty good equipment from my experience. Don't buy cheap shit because it will just be shit and you'll have to get better stuff not too far down the line.
Also, this would be a better post for the training/nutrition section, because most of the guys on this part of the forums are stupid and ignorant, think they know everything but never threw a punch, let alone stepped into a ring, in their lives.
Good luck with it!
I don't know what's been posted..I might be repeating shit..but if this hasn't been mentioned take this in to consideration..
I say fix the basics..MITT WORK!..teach a jab..make him perfect that shit..the most important punch in boxing..then work on harder punches like hooks, uppercuts and of course crosses!.
Roadwork..his stamina needs to build now!..and make him diet!!!..I don't mean just salad and water..I mean Lean meats, Protein, egg whites, complex carbs and definitely stay away from fatty foods (McDonalds, BK, etc) and LOTS of WATER!!!..
No weight training..too young!..strictly push ups sit ups pull ups and plyometrics!..should up his strength and speed!.
Work on basic footwork, head movement, and defense..just know that this won't be fun..it takes hard work and dedication..blood sweat and tears..days when you don't wanna do it no more..YOU HAVE TO!!..it's all in the discipline you teach him..
last but not least..I don't know how your money is..but if you can manage to arrange a weekend off every now and then especially when he has a Mon or Fri off (3-day weekend) to go to different cities to their gyms..like 1 in Texas, 1 in Cali, and 1 in Chicago..etc..as all those have different styles of fighting and training..you can team up with the gyms trainer and he can use his regimen to teach him a few new tricks and polish some things up..he's young he can learn and absorb alot of information and keep it embedded in his head..
When there's a will there's a way..I'm sure you can do it man..good luck with him..and I hope to see some tapes of him working the bag or the mitts sometime soon..Peace out homie!

yes that is true but would you say that starting to train him early would give him more of an advantage?
Absolutely.
The younger ; the better.
But all I'm saying is that it's not always true.
As long as you have the pasion to do it ; the age doesn't really matter much.
Granted when he's facing guys his own age in the Amateurs who'v ebeen doing it since they were 5, he might run into some problems.
But it's a learning experience ; it's not like he wants his kid to be the next Roy Jones or Floyd Mayweather.
So as long as it stays at that learning experience level for a while, there should be no pressure.
I see it was a win/win for both the son, and the father.
Regardless of the outcome both of them will walk away from it with a much greater appreciation for the sport, and probably strengthen their bond as well.
all I'm saying is that HE needs to be ready to start teaching his son "the right way". Get some books or vids at the library. Technique don't just come from watching fights.
Once again ; absolutely.
Become a sponge.
Soak up everything you can about the sport from every writer and author you can.
Watch videos of shadowboxing techniques, let him watch videos of his favorite fighters training so he can see the hard work being put in and the sacrifice it's going to take.
And just go from there.
Be light hearted, but be dedicated.
No clubs nearby, no equipment, but yes to hope and desire
Without any equipment, one could learn stance, footwork,
and the basic punches.
If you don't have a proper skipping rope, then an old piece of rope will do.
Just standing in one spot, one can practice left jabs -
single jabs, double jabs and even triple jabs
and power jabs to head and body.
Having somebody leading with jabs, can teach defense -
blocking, slipping, and the beat goes on with every type of punch and defensive technique.
Much of what is needed, doesn't need a full time gym,
just the desire and availability to learn and practice.
Get all the equipment you would need for proper boxing training, once you have all that study lots of tapes from different trainers and try to emulate the teachings to your son.
Here is a youtube channel with more then enough boxing training videos to get you on your way.

boxing is just like any other sport. You should get them in as soon as they can. My nephews are baseball players, been playing since they were 5, now they are 17 and 15 and being scouted to play for the US U18 Team. The longer they have to learn before going pro the better

I'm honestly not sure ; never was a big fan of Joe's.
But that's only 1 example of a father with 0 experience training his son.
There are plenty of other examples.
Same as there are plenty of other examples of "late starters" who had success with it. Guys like Tarver, Campbell, Qawi, etc....
And they all started much later than 14.
yes that is true but would you say that starting to train him early would give him more of an advantage?
I'm sure there is a lot that can't be explained to you. Maybe you'll get it when you're an adult.
I'm pretty sure he said his son has expressed an intrest in it.
If he's interested in it ; surely he knows the risks.
I don't see anything wrong with him helping train his son in something his son has expressed an intrest in doing.
At what age did Enzo start training Joe?
I'm honestly not sure ; never was a big fan of Joe's.
