I mean getting a fluke title shot, becoming a world champion, then becoming one of the greatest champions in his weight.
Rocky was considered a great heavyweight.
So who in the sport came closest to fulfilling this fantasy?
obviously rocky marciano, watch him on film, there identical in fighting wise lol.
My thoughts exactly, not the most talented but completely full of heart.

The KO in your signature is of Prince Charles Williams, not Michael Nunn.
I'd have to say Arturo Gatti, in the sense that neither had much defense to speak of. Gatti also wasn't the most athletically gifted fighter and overachieved by relying highly on his balls and punching power to overcome adversity.
I can't say he exactly overcame a lot of opponents he should've otherwise succumbed to like Rocky did, but he definitely brought it.
I'd have to agree with the dude that brought up Pipino, i didn't know his exact record before he got the title match, but he defended it for a while after that. Thanks for the info on this.
Well Rocky was a champ,so whoever is to be picked, should have been champ!!Then they have got to be loved greatly by tons of people!!Then they have to have an exciting style based more so on power than actuall skill!!Then they have to have a suspect chin, because Rocky ate canvas a whole bunch!!Then they have to have a great fighter to elevate them to great status,in the win!!Then they have to have 1 last great fight in a losing effort!!The only name I can think of to match this pretty closely,is Tito Trinidad!!:439:
Jim Braddock
Not exactly a great champion but he is remembered very fondly.
Pipino Cuevas, as mentioned earlier, was handpicked as an easy title defense for Angel Robinson Garcia, but Cuevas devastated him and went onto defend his title more than 10 times.
Saoul Mamby was the exact opposite of Balboa style-wise but he went into a title fight with nearly as many losses as wins, took the fight to the Thai champion Saensak Muangsurin in his hometown and was robbed of a decision.
In his next title shot against South Korean Sang Hyun Kim, he was once again fighting in the champion's hometown but this time he didn't let the fight go into the judges' hands and stopped Kim in the 14th round. He made 5 defenses of the title.
He recently made a comeback at the age of 60, much like Balboa!
Chuck Wepner works for this liquor company I deliver for. He's a salesman. I deliver to one of his stops in like Ortley Beach or some shit. And I saw his name on the invoice. I was like is this thee Chuck Wepner, or is it a coincidence. It's really him, haven't met him, but he's been working here for years aparently.
The late great Arturo Thunder Gatti
I dont think he was picked out of nowhere on a fluke he had built a rep as being a pretty solid prospect/contender by the time he fought Patterson
Well the character of Rocky Balboa according to Stallone was based on Marciano's fighting style.
No.He wa based on Rocky Marciano's nice, outgoing and general good guy demeanor and personality.
His fighting style was based from Wepner.
wait pipeno cuevas, he got a shot at the WW WBA belt when he was 17-6, knowone gve him a chance, then he won, and defended the title 11 TIMES!!! a very underrated fighter, was a monster puncher.
Bingo
I think TS was asking for a fighter that turned out to be a good fighter after he got a fluke shot at the title and those mentioned prior never became more than a short time titleist

Seriously? wow... that shits on what i just wrote!!
Yes.The original bout was for the WBO flyweight title between Jose Lopez and Alejandro Montiel.
Alejandro Montiel was originally scheduled to fight Lopez for the vacant crown, but withdrew a few hours before the fight. Garcia happened to be in attendance as a spectator and was asked to step in while sitting at ringside eating a doughnut. Garcia fought and won the title using borrowed trunks, protective cup and mouthpiece.

Isidro Garcia won a title being picked to fight on the night of the fight being chosen from the spectators.
