Cotto can't have his cake and eat it too

If Miguel Cotto really wants a piece of the Pacquiao cake, he's either going to have to take it or let it be. What Cotto wants however is to take the cake and eat it as well.
It's a simple dilemma really. Cotto wants to fight Pacquiao for the money a fight with Boxing's cash cow presents but doesn't want to stake his WBO welterweight crown in the process.
Well, something's got to give. And if Cotto is truly as confident as he says in knocking Pacquiao out then I don't see why he has to be so stingy with his "ABC" belt.
Is it a matter of principle?
Cotto has volunteered to relinquish his belt if the WBO insists that he put it on the line against the Pacman. In Cotto's opinion, belts should not be accorded to fights fought at a catch-weight.
In reality however, such occurances have happened in the past. When Oscar De la Hoya fought Bernard Hopkins in 2004, they fought at a catch-weight of 158, two pounds below the middleweight limit with Hopkins' titles on the line as well as De la Hoya's. Sugar Ray Leonard won two titles against Donny Lalonde in 1988 at a catch-weight. The list goes on.
I am not saying Cotto is wrong in his stand but if he truly feels so all he has to do is "just say no".
Pardon me for that unnecessary childhood flashback, I was simply making a point. (you have to give me props though from finding that in the archives and getting a spanish translation at that for Cotto lol)
Let's face it, Pacquiao has the "aces" when it comes to the negotiating table by virtue of being the best pound-for-pound fighter in the sport and currently the biggest money fight in boxing. Well, Pacquiao has decided to play his cards and all Cotto has left to do is put up or shut up. Pacquiao has options, Miguel needs to pick his. In poker terms, he can go "all-in" or "fold". Enough of all this posturing. 145 is a fair catch-weight for both men. Cotto is definitely much bigger than Pacman. Two pounds isn't a lot of weight either.
So what's it gonna be Miguel?

If 2 pounds isn't much and doesn't make any difference then why make him go down 2 pounds?
The examiner is a joke. Bunch of fan boys writing crap and sucking up to their fighters.
stop crying kid here just for you :bottle: :bottle:
Don't worry you're still the top 5 P4P moaners of this forum.
IT AINT THAT COTTO DOESNT WANT TO DEFEND IT.
COTTO IS ARGUING THE FACT THAT MANNY, HIMSELF, AGREED TO 145 NON-TITLE & NOW MANNY WANTS TO SWITCH THE VERBAL AGREEMENT THAT WAS IN PLACE.
IF YOU ARE GONNA CHANGE THE AGREEMENT, THEN THAT MEANS NEW NEGO MUST TAKE PLACE.
COTTO WAS USING THE BELT AS A BARGANING CHIP TO MAKE MANNY EITHER DROP THE 145 LIMIT OR PONY UP MORE OF THE CUT.
IT'S MANNY THAT WANTS TO HAVE THE CAKE ALL TO HIMSELF LIKE A AFRENTAO.
MANNY WANTS 145, BIG CUT, & TITLE BELT WHILE COTTO BENDS OVER & TAKES IT.
cOTTO WAS TRYING TO MAKE MANNY BEND OVER IN RETURN BY GIVING SOMETHING BACK IN RETURN FOR GOING BACK ON HIS WORD.
EVERYONE WANTS TO MAKE IT SEEM LIKE COTTO WAS AFAID TO PUT THE BELT UP. :RRONTFL:
COTTO MADE HIS INTENTIONS CLEAR WHEN HE STATED THAT FOR THE CLOTTEY FIGHT THAT THEY AGREED TO 147 TITLE FIGHT & THATS WHAT THEY SIGNED FOR.
WITH MANNY THOU, THEY HAD AGREED ON 145 NON TITLE SO HE WASNT GONNA SIGN NO CONTRACT THAT STATED 145 TITLE FIGHT.
EVERYONE TALKS ALOT OF MIERDA BUT IF THEY WERE IN COTTO'S SHOES, THEY BE DOING THE SAME FUKIN SHIT.
What a ****ing idiot.
What's next Pac want a massage from Cotto if he wins 3 rounds of the 12?
I would have turned this fight down if I was Cotto just because of how they're steamrolling his ass.
BORICUAS !!! Get ready to see Cotto give Pacquiao the beating of his life. Pacquiao will forever avoid the welterweight division again....sorry mosley, floyd and anyone else wishing to fight pacquiao.
Cotto staking WBO crown at 145 lb

THE WELTERWEIGHT CROWN will be on the line and the showdown will be at 145 pounds when Manny Pacquiao and Miguel Cotto tangle on Nov. 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Promoter Bob Arum declared this Sunday night, quelling speculations that Cotto won’t be staking his World Boxing Organization title against Pacquiao if the megabuck bout is not fought at 147 lb.
“Everything has been decided and agreed to,” Arum told Michael Marley of Examiner.com on Monday.
“Cotto is defending the title and the weight limit will be 145 pounds. There are no disagreements or problems. Now, everything is cleared up.”
The 77-year-old Arum, who is vacationing in southern France, expects to have the fight contract signed by Pacquiao and Cotto by Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila).
With the pay-per-view fight projected to be a big hit, only 3,000 tickets will be put on sale by Aug. 17.
While Cotto has started preparations in Caguas, Puerto Rico, Pacquiao has yet to announce his choice of where to hold the first half of his eight-week training camp.
Arum has advised Pacquiao to do it outside the United States to avoid a hefty tax assessment.
Among the places being considered are Nassau in the Bahamas, Vancouver, Canada; Mexico and Cebu and Baguio in the Philippines.
In a related development, 44-year-old middleweight and light heavyweight star Bernard Hopkins picked Pacquiao to beat Cotto by technical knockout in the later rounds.
and cotto's getting a career payday, even at a 35% split, and he's getting the chance to resurrect his career also. i said before, if cotto doesn't want the fight, all he has to do is pass up the payday, and go look for a fight w/ someone else at 147.....this crying shit is getting old tho.ressurecting his career? dude your a moron.
Every fighter is different just because hopkins, sugar, and chavez did it. It doesn't mean that cotto has to do it.pacquiao is getting 65%, title, home turf, and lower weight limits. exactly, pac is getting everything his way in this deal.
I hate to break it to the examiner but it was I who said Pacquiao could not have his cake and eat it too.
Pacquaio wanted to fight Cotto and eveyone thought it would be at welter and then they began talking about 143-145 then it was for a belt that was not part of the contract and then Roach wanted Cotto to let his hair grow and prohibit him from plucking his eyebrows, then they were demanding that Cotto must hire Evangelista back, and on and on and on and on.
Sorry Examiner, you fail.
Ooopps to make matters even worse, they are set to make yet another trinket which no one has ever seen or heard about.
Last time I checked, this belt was ment for Manny and not Cotto.
Who is trying to make sure that Manny get's his cake and eats the whole damn thing too?
That would be the WBO and WBC--the only thing Manny did was accept the title clause which he was notified about. Cotto agreed to the venue, split, etc. --so there's nothing to argue about in that respect.

WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto is very confident as he begins the first phase of his training camp for the November 14 bout with Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao's trainer Freddie Roach is predicting a knockout win for his side. He doesn't see Cotto being able to deal with Pacquiao's speed. Cotto is not paying attention to anything that Roach says. He continues to feel that Pacquiao's two biggest wins have been overhyped because Oscar De La Hoya was weight drained and Ricky Hatton was made to order.
"At the end of the day, Freddie Roach, all he can do is try to prepare Pacquiao to beat Miguel Cotto. I am not De La Hoya, who was caught at the end of his career, lost all of that weight and they took advantage of it. I am not Ricky Hatton who had an overrated career and had no defense. entire team, especially Freddie Roach, knows what Miguel Cotto is capable of doing in the ring," Cotto told El Nuevo Dia.
Cotto says Roach likes to trash talk with the teams of Pacquiao's opponents but there will be no trash talking in this fight. Cotto plans to keep it civil and let his fists do the talking on fight night.
"That has always been Freddie Roach's problem. He likes to be in that kind of role but here he doesn't have to be. We have a lot of professionalism and plan to show it," Cotto said.
