Hall-of-fame trainer Emanuel Steward is hoping to hook up with WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto and help the Puerto Rican star beat Manny Pacquiao on November 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. There were rumors that Cotto would hire Steward to work his corner. To date, nobody has contacted Steward from Cotto's camp. details]
some of you guys are stupid. if cotto hires steward, he should welcome steward's criticisms and try and fix the problems. why hire steward just to be a cheerleader? that's assinine.
honestly, I think that's what's wrong w/ cotto's corner, cotto doesn't answer to anybody anymore. cotto is the boss and the rest of his corner are yes men.
I agree with what you say but I'm puzzled that Steward is being so persistent in lobbying publicly to train Cotto, given that Cotto said a few weeks ago that although he's honoured by the request, he has no intention of following up on it. It just makes Steward look desperate to me, and job applications via the media are not usually the most effective way of applying for a position. Someone of Steward's standing should preserve his dignity, IMO. He must have contacts who know Cotto well, and he could use those channels rather than the media. If he really wants the job, that would surely be more effective as well as more dignified than going public like this.
Totally agree with that. It's a bit out of character for him...or is it? Steward's always been a good self-promoter. Although in this case I do think that he has some sort of strategy to beat Pac and is licking his chops at matching wits with Roach.
I believe Manny Steward I mean here's a guy that said Hagler-Hearns would end in a KO3 granted he predicted the wrong guy would win but still a good prediction. He also said that he could beat Mayweather with Kermit Cintron.
He didn't diss Cotto, he was being very honest that night. Clottey was fighting a good fight. But he did give Cotto props at the end because he was the one who closed like a champ in those rounds.
I'm not sure Steward is a good fit for Cotto but I thought his assessment of him during that fight (and in this interview) is dead on. I think Cotto has a great chance as well. I'm not sure what Steward has in mind for him but it seems he's genuinely excited to implement it.

Manny dissed Cotto the whole fight against Clottey. He just wants a big fat check. Screw him!

he couldn't KO a motionless, dehydrated, old de la hoya in 8 roudns, but you talk about him knocking out a dominant WW? lol
SceneSpectator!
Pac could not KO DDiaz should DDiaz quit before resuming 9 round lol! Got my point, huh??!!!:spank:
dude, ure always saying the same shit.
pac is no joke n cotto better not get that "pac is a small jww" crap in his head.
I agree, Pac is no damn joke, and not even small either. I also think that Cotto needs a fresh eye on his corner, somebody that is not used to his style, somebody that can point out them flaws and try to fix them....
Any improvement is welcome.........
I think he needs Steward in order to improve , if he keeps Joe as his trainer he will end up doing the same training over and over again..... He needs a fresh eye on his corner and maybe Steward knows something no one else knows about Pacquiao
Exactly, I like Joe and Joe knows what he's doing but a fresh eye in camp wouldn't hurt. Hell, Cotto got the money, I think Manny can sow up that punch that comes up the middle and catch's him like clock work. If anything Cotto should just hire him as a consultant. :boxing:
Steward wants to join the party but cotto said, " No way!"
I expect another announcement from emmanuel tomorrow, saying he can help pacquiao Knock miguel Out. :D
Emmanuel Steward is a HOF trainer but he is past his prime and if I was Cotto I would go after Nazim Richardson. Or a spanish speaking trainer
Why not Nacho Beristan he know the perfect style to beat pac. Plus he speaks spanish
hahahahaha...
first of all.... its cotto and pacquiao will fight in the ring not stewart. even in de la hoya-pacquiao fight, oscar hired three trainer zaragosa, beristaine and dundee. both of them failed to help oscar to win the fight. who is really stewart anyway? he is just making publicity just to make cotto hired him in his camp, its all depends on the boxer how to win the fight....
Cotto has already made it clear (very politely) that he won't be linking up with Steward. He won't change his mind now. I don't know why Steward is being so persistent, it just makes him look desperate.
Losing faith on his ability?
Nervous?
Worried?
Panicky?
First off, I may be one of the only guys on here who is a PBF, Cotto and Pacman fan but I'm not sure that Manny Stewart can bring anything new to Cotto's game. When Cotto was at 140 he used his boxing skills more...you know, footwork, the jab, but then like a lot of fighters he fell in love wth his power. He turned into a PAIN type fighter like Margarito, only with a little more lateral movement. This fight is going to be good because these guys are fighters with NO QUIT in them. If Cotto was a quitter he DEFINATLY would've quit against Clottey as bad as that cut was (see Camacho Jr. vs JJ Leija to see a quitter). I got Cotto winning only because he is going to wear on Pac and wear on him all night. Goldie was weak that night and Hatton ran into a early punch and was out on his feet fighting on instinct.
Pac hasn't fought a guy this big for sustained rounds yet, and Cotto is punishing. Pac can pull it out IF HE CAN TAKE THE PAIN.

I voted no because there might be some communication problems which would delay the training. Unless Steward knows how to speak Spanish.
Did you just seriously say this? Roach and Manny don't seem to have any problems, and Cotto speaks and understands better than Manny does.
Anyway, someone stated earlier that Steward spots a lot of Cotto's mistakes in fights, and I feel that's exactly what Cotto needs in his corner. The main thing Cotto does badly is getting hit right up the middle with punches, whether they be uppercuts which is the big one, but also straight right/left. Either, Cotto's trainers never used it in practice or its Cotto's weakness, forever. At worst Steward couldn't improve it at all, so I can't see this as being a bad thing. Also, in every fight that I've watch with Steward doing commentary, sure, he "picks" on Cotto a lot, but he sounds like a trainer and I think he genuinely wants to help Cotto. I think after watching the Clottey fight, he really started to respect Cotto and maybe see something in him.
During the Marg fight he said he saw Marg's pressure wearing down Cotto, and that's exactly what happened. In the Clottey fight he said he needed to catch Clottey coming in and in the 10th that's exactly what Cotto did. Steward say that in the 3rd round though after Cotto's initial plan wasn't/didn't work. In the Judah fight he said Judah had to use the uppercut and would hurt Cotto, and bam it happened. Sure, it sounds like Manny only see's what Cotto does wrong, which is EXACTLY what Cotto needs, he does the things he does great already there is no need to improve those. Its time Cotto have someone who improves the bad vs. improving the good at this stage in his career. Or, at the very least he needs someone with experience in his corner.
ya man im gonna have to agree with what the other two guys said about your post and go with everyone keeps thinkin just cause pac started in the really light divisions that their gonna be able to walk over him but look at what happened to DLH even though he was dehydrated and has always had trouble with southpaws and then look at Hatton i mean maybe he had training camp toubles but still pac owned him cotto shouldnt get those kind of thoughts in his head or else he might be in for one long night...or a short one haha
i never seen cotto take ne of his opponents lightly. i doubt he will in his biggest fight of his career. sorry guys but thats not gonna happen.
