RIP Budd Schulberg

Yeah I mentioned On the Waterfront. I have a Schulberg collection of boxing writings. He does a great job of capturing the mood of the fight game. No disrespect because he's a great writer, but in terms of boxing opinion, that book he wrote which was just a bunch of journal entries was one of the worst I've read. He was the summary of "THEY DON'T MAKE FIGHTERS LIKE DE OLDEN DAYS", which I can't stand. It's still sad he passed though. RIP bud

The story was said to have been based by Shulberg on a series of articles in the New York Sun written by Malcolm Johnson. Rod Steiger, who went on to win an Oscar statue in a later film (In The Heat of the Night), starred as Brando's brother.

Shulberg also wrote the script of the Academy Award winning film, "On the Waterfront" which starred Marlon Brando as a former boxer who gave up the fight game after having been told by a mob boss running the docks to lose in a fight he clearly was winning. I bet he HATED europe as much as nazis hated the jews and would kill european children had he gotten the chance. but im gonna say rip to the man anyway, im not gonna be disrespectful and hate on dead people even though he was a xeno-phobic euro hater. Budd Schulberg was Jewish... I don't know his opinions on Europe be he did at least go there. In any case I should check out the movie the Harder they Fall. I'll get the book too. Has anyone seen the movie Fat City starring Jeff Bridges? I want to know if it stands up to the book in quality.

He wrote one the best boxing novels of all time in :The harder they fall. It was later turned into a movie with Humphrey Bogart and appearances of several boxing people including jersey Joe Walcott and Max Baer. It's a great black and white film and is highly recommended.

yeah, sad to see him pass, i met him a long time ago at the corrales vs castillo I open workout, i actually have video of him hitting the heavybag there at the workout. funny stuff, hitting the bag in his 90's. good to see that he lived a full life and died of natural causes......... the video is somewhere in the archives of **********.com(btalk), all the way at the end....... my buddy al did the editing, that is why it's fudged a little bit.......
