A British boxer has lost friends and been run out of his town after revealing that he'll be undergoing a sex change and begin fighting as a woman.
The Southport Visiter reports that Rob Newbiggin, who has a wife and three children, will begin his new life as "Mercedes" after the operation.
The story, which first broke in the London tabloid The Sun , has caused Newbiggin pain after his hometown met his decision with negativity. "My friends don't want to know me. I've got people winding their windows down shouting abuse at me while I go for my run -- that's why we are having to relocate. I have to think about my kids.
"At the end of it I'll be the woman I want to be and I'll have done a lot of good, but it will be a huge sacrifice because I'm going to have to leave," Newbiggin said.
Newbiggin said that he has high levels of estrogen, but the body of a male, so his gender can't be definitively classified.
Until he becomes a woman, Newbiggin will continue fighting as a man, with his last boxing match on Aug. 14. His record includes three wins (one by knockout) and 12 defeats.
At the Olympics, it isn't men with high levels of estrogen that are scrutinized; it's been women who have high levels of testosterone. Over the years, the Olympics have examined men who compete as women to increase their medal counts. Gender testing began at the Mexico City games in 1968, but testing evolved with the advent of urine testing, which is able to detect any hormones that might mistakenly label a woman as a man because of high testosterone levels.
