first of, this is just my opinion and im a fan of both fighters. hope posters here will be respectful with their replies and discuss this matter with intelligence
if cotto wants to remain as a champ, why not pay the sanctioning fees since he will be stripped of the title anyway if he doesnt. if hes really confident of beating pac, then why not put it on the line against him and defend it with ease?
by the way, pac is now ranked by the wbo as #1 :cool2:
http://www.wbo-int.com/revised/RANKINGS-WBO.asp
Cotto wont get stripped for the belt, he doesnt have to make a mandatory defense yet. Cotto didnt wanna wage the belt in the first place..
if he doesnt want to pay the fees, he'll get stripped. and why shouldnt it be a mandatory defense when pac is already ranked #1 by the wbo?
lol He's beatin a bunch of softies, that's it.
If Cotto isn't confident about beating Paq, it's more than likely due to how he probably felt during the Clottey fight. I mean he's obviously slipped up some. But if Cotto can bite down for one more fight and play his defense and let his hands go like he use to, then he should be alright. But if he comes in with a slower hop to his step, and he starts lettin Paq dive in and out without makin him pay....Well, I hope someone slaps him till he wakes the f*ck up in between rounds lol. Because there's absolutely no reason why he should lose this fight.
all of your "ifs" maybe the reason why cotto doesnt want to put the belt on the line. i think this fight is 50-50 it could go either way so we shouldnt write off any of these 2 great fighters :cool2:
JM1 said nice observation but I disagree with the bold. Cotto respects all of his opponents outside the ring but in the ring like he said I got 2 arms just like him. So the respect cotto shows is respect a man shows a man. Cotto will handle his business inside the ring like he always has.
All that stuff you said about pac is true but it also holds for cotto. just IMO. Except the kareokee LOL
you misunderstand what he said bro. of course, each fighter will give all they got in the ring but that doesnt mean they dont respect each other. so dont expect cotto and pac hugging each other on nov14 :lol1:
Imagine if pac decided he wanted to have a catchweight of 141. It's still welterweight technically, but is it really a welterweight fight?
you didnt answer my question. you said belts shouldnt be won at catchweights, my question is, why is the wbo wanting this fight to be a title fight if the belts shouldnt be at stake at catchweights? answer my question pls :cool2:
It's a catchweight within the welterweight division. Belts shouldn't be won on cathweights. The belt signifies that you are the best fighter within the 141-147 range, not the 141-145 range.
Tell that to HOFers or future HOFers Pernell Whitaker and JCC, who fought for the WBC's welterweight belt at 145, that's the closest comparison to the Pac/Cotto fight. You might wanna check out the BHop/ODLH middleweight fight too for the unified belts (158), the Leonard/Hearns II super middleweight title fight (163), Leonard/Lalonde light heavyweight title fight (168), and the Terry Norris/Meldrick Taylor Jr.middleweight title fight at 150. How come nobody said nothing about those fights?
This is my opinion for real: I think and believe any opponent who respects Pacquiao will lose. DLH respected Pacman, so did Hatton...even his earlier fights with Morales and Barrera. They both respected him to a certain degree. Mayweather even respects Pacman. The only one i can think of who probably doesn't respect Pacquiao at all is.....Juan Manuel Marquez. Which is why i think he has the greatest chance of defeating Pacquiao. But since Cotto respects Pacquiao, i don't think he's gonna win this one.
I mean ya gotta respect the guy. He doesn't really talk shiit or trash talk. Not really arrogant or cocky, he's down to fight to the death, trains like a fcukin hog, enters the ring to his own Kareokee song (which is clownin btw), he has a quiet confidence, humble, generous, and all about business.

147 is the max limit for welterweight. 145 is still, welterweight. now, why would the wbo suggest a title fight if belts shouldnt be won at catchweights?

yeah but the contract says they will fight at 145 so fighting at 147 should be out of the picture now. so let me ask you this, what division is 145 then?

I'm sure this argument has taken place on these boards 100 times by now, and I doubt the two sides will ever see eye to eye, but the way I see it while 145 is within the welterweight limit, so is 147. So, unless Pac wants to let Cotto weigh in at 147 it's not a true welterweight fight, it's a catchweight. There's no belt for 141-145. The WBO Welterweight Belt is for the champion of 141-147.
yeah but the contract says they will fight at 145 so fighting at 147 should be out of the picture now. and you know for yourself that 145 is welterweight then why not put the welterweight belt on the line?
pac wants the belt. and why not put it on the line? 145 is still welterweight and pac is now ranked #1 by the wbo so it should be a mandatory defense in the first place :cool2:

I'd only put the belt down if the fights max weight was 147. Thats how Cotto won it, that's how his opponent should win it.
Regardless, I don't care about the belt and I doubt Manny does either. I just wanna see the fight.

I had a dream last night that Miguel Cotto KO'd Manny Pacquiao with a bodyshot in the FIRST ROUND. There were 2 knockdowns, the second one being the knockout. hmmm let's see how this comes about....
and what does your dream have to do with the topic?
don't get me wrong I didn't say credentials don't matter. what fighter in the world do you know that doesn't want to be a world champion? what I'm saying is that even beyond belts and titles the name of the game is to beat the best men, that is what makes you memorable and history has proven that.. sure championships matter, skills matter too to a certain extent but none of that means anything if you haven't proved yourself against the best fighters amongst you. a strap doesn't define the fighter it's his resume, the men he's beaten to be where he is. that is why Cotto WOULD give up the belt due to sanctioning fees, him not only being the champion so it all falls on him but then he's making substantially less therefore it's no gain for him, it becomes more of a burden on his back than a belt on his waist...
and what is this you saying that a WELTERWEIGHT bout is not a mandatory 147? then what is it? when fighters make weight, and all fighters(unless there's a contractual agreement) must make the weight limit for the fight or he/she will be fined and possibly not be able to fight depending how much or how little they came in over/underweight. you can't possibly try to insinuate to me that someone who weighs 141 can fight someone who weighs 147 and that is not a JWW VS a WW. this is why they are referred to as weight DIVISIONS, because there is a division that takes place man you can't just come in at 141 in a Welterweight bout man, fighters must meet the limit on the scales for whatever weight they are in, THEN they can gain or lose any and as many pounds as they want/can but in EVERY fight(once again, unless there's a contractual agreement) each fighter MUST make the weight limit of 147 pounds, that is the most OBVIOUS thing to see man..
so much words but you can actually answer my question by saying yes or no. so does cotto care about being a world champ? yes or no? and to answer your question, yes, having a welterweight bout at 147 is not mandatory, cause if it is, then pac-cotto fight wont happen at 145. simple as that. :cool2:

so cotto could careless if hes not a champ?
