A lot of these morons forget that 147 is the Welterweight LIMIT. It's sort of like the speed limit on the road. If the speed limit is 55, thats the most you can go without it being an infraction against driving law. The catch-weight is designed to lure Cotto into a fight with Pacman who is naturally lighter but the P4P king, thus translating into a huge payday for Cotto.
147 is the limit, however it cant be classed as a welterweight fight because the boxers cannot weigh in at 146 or 147 which is within the welterweight limit. catchweights are bollocks IMO and should certainly not be a welterweight title fight.

I have mixed feelings about catchweight for a title fiht, but i guess some of you need some lessons in history.
Hopkin-DLH for unified SMW @ 158 lbs.
Leonard-Lalonde WBC LHW @ 168 lbs.
Leonard-Hearns 2 WBO SMW @ 163 lbs.
Norris-Taylor WBC LMW @ 150 lbs.
Whitaker-Chavez WBC WW @ 145 lbs.
Funny the last one will parrallel the Cotta-Pac fight. Cotto will come in at 145 while Pac at 142 just like Whitaker and Chavez did.
well said :cool2:

Of course it shouldn't be for the title. Since when can you not weigh 146 or 147 for a WW title fight? WW is 147. I'm sure the boxing dipshits will make it a title fight so there boy Pacquiao get more undeserved recognition.
A welterweight fight is somewhere between 141 to 147, and 147 being its max weight. There was already a precedent back in the days, but for an easy recall, check out the Hopkins/De La Hoya fight, the catch weight was 158, and that's for Hopkins' middleweight belts.
So your excuse that it shouldn't be for the title because the fight will get made at 145, won't fly, because you're dead wrong...
TITLE fight a catch up one
It is a title fight its upto cotto to decide if he want it to defend against Pacman.
It is a welter weight fight. pac never enter 147lb in a fight he weight 142 in
weigh-in and enters 148 in the ring. but ODLH and pac fight it over 147.
the weight limit for wbo doesnt matter as long as cotto decides it.
History! History is more important than dominating a division. It will never put you there and people will easily forget you. Pac 7th world title division will go down in history as one of the greatest boxers of all time.
What is historical about winning 1 out of 4 titles compared to establishing yourself as the best? Sonny Liston had ONE successful title defense and is looked at by most as one of the ten or twelve best heavyweights in history. Why? Because he cleaned out and dominated that division on his way to the title.
To many of you clowns put to much stock into these paper titles. Its good to see Manny winning titles, but if you don't defend against the best or unify, it means little compared with the names Armstrong, Langford or Charles. There is much more substance in dominating a division than just winning a title.
I love Pac and think it would be a great accomplishment, but one title out of four recognized titles is not historic. I think Cotto is the best fighter at 147, but he isn't the man. That distinction belongs to Mosely. all these weight classes are impressive, but its more impressive to establish longevity and dominance over the top guys in each division than it is to just grab a paper title.

well, i hope that its a title fight for boxing history's sake. lets wait for the details cause most articles say that it will be a title fight :cool2:

Because if he could, Cotto would come in at 146 or 147.
Weight limits are(upper limits) that's to prevent bigger fighter challenging a smaller fighter at his lower weight class without actually moving down in weight. But the there's is no preventing a smaller fighter to move up to to a weight he thinks he can compete on. Even a flyweight can challenge a welterweight if he is crazy enough to do so. But that doesn't mean he has to come in and stuff himself to be within the welterweight range of 141-147 lbs. Fight night he can come at 135lbs as long as his challenger stays below 147 upperlimit, its still a welterweight fight. The Catchweigh is simply a gentleman's agreement :cool2:
